    Retired ASE Master, not welder, but building my exhaust, without buying a TIG for single use. I simply need to weld “V-Bands” and perhaps a few pie cuts as well. I appreciate so much, the info I believe will lead me to success on a 67 C-10 with LS conversion, OD-Automatic I built over winter on the bench. I building it to last & live 50+ more years. Tip: I have tapped alum foil next to welds to keep splatter down, after a weld. This video is a keeper for quick reference. Thank you kindly for sharing your experience!

    To the folks questioning using 309 filler on stainless, I have a little anecdote. Some years ago, I had prepped for a cross country motorcycle camping trip, only to discover a cracked weld on the exhaust header (commercially welded 304 stainless, not my weld, O2 sensor bung was lifting off). I had picked up some 309 mig wire for another project which changed direction and the 309 was never opened. I'd never welded stainless. I'd never welded anything this thin. I only had standard argon/CO2 at hand. Watched a couple TH-cam videos on how to do it and let 'er rip. The exhaust weld has held up for many thousands of miles since, even more miles than it had when it cracked.

      DId you use Ar/CO2 or Helium+?

    • @justtheotherdave
      @justtheotherdave ปีที่แล้ว

      @@imaouima I believe it was 98/2% Ar/CO2. The bottle was "Stargon" but no specific blend labeled on it (i.e. not identified as Stargon VS, Stargon CS, or Stargon SS).

    98% ar/co2 mix works also. alot of splatter with short-circuit mig so it's a no-go. Mig work great on thicker stainless steel but with spray arc or also for production work with pulse mig.

      Kevin, I'm using a miller access 450, v groove rollers, 308 ss wire from a barrel, 98%A 2%CO2, and I believe standard contact tips.
      I only get about 3 minutes of welding before I get a unstable arc and the tip is shot. My rollers are pretty clean and the wire is feeding pretty good.
      Why are my tips burning out so fast?

    I feel your second side is more consistent, your first side where you "whipped" has a wavy edge like an ocean. For those asking about the shielding gas, well Helium adds heat to the low heat input characteristics of GMAW-S. Someone else commented about using 309 filler on stainless to stainless, and I will too, what are you teaching us here? Either way, thanks for giving it a try and helping out the welding community.

    • @Litanic
      @Litanic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You 'can', but the high carbon contents will eliminate the materials' stainless properties and rust much more likely. With MIG/GMAW, use either tri-gas or Argon+o2 (99/1 DCRP or 95/5 DCSP) to preserve the stainless properties. Use c15/25 for your own projects, but not for customer projects.

    • @bradleyrussell1973
      @bradleyrussell1973 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It will not rust as long as you do not touch it with carbon steel. Use stainless brushes. Stainless WILL rust if anything carbon makes contact with it. You can actually scratch it with a nail, and that scratch will rust. Its harder than iron, so the iron will actually deposit itself onto the stainless, and oxidize.

    • @Litanic
      @Litanic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not easily, but the filler's job is to retain the properties of the base materials. However, a weakness of 309l filler is water/marine applications, as it contains no molybdenum (while 316 does).

Of course I was running strait argon and was welding with 309 instead of er308 so, I don’t know. Also, it was with a Lincoln 210 muti-process that was in awful shape. I just could not get a stable arc. I was all over the dial trying to find the sweet spot and just couldn’t. That almost never happens to me after 9 years in the field. Hey Bob, I always appreciate watching your videos.. I have a question : At work, I keep getting black suit on the work material (316L).. what causes this and how do I fix this? I'm welding with a HeArCo2 mix on 5/16 - 1/8 fillet... downhill running a 0.035 wire at 28V@400ipm wire speed.... can't tell you travel speed... this setting causes excessive spatter and black suit... I have tried everything from angle to terminal distance.. have not played with inductance or gas flow though... also tried different wire speeds.. best result I got was with spray transfer but was not practical holding that flat position.. (10' diameter reservoir on rotating positioner)
    Thanks again for these instructive videos..

      Ian Trudel too hot. Keep pointed straight in or slightly uphill. Try sth closer to 23-25 volts. Will have to play with wire but prolly around 400 ipm

    What is with the high peak in the center of the weld? that isnt normal to me along with all the spatter. I've always been taught that was bad and the weld isnt correct?

      335 wfs I believe is the issue, I did a lot if mig welding ss for a while, the amperage he had the machine set to was about right, but the wfs I typically set around 215-245 depending upon circumstances. Side note, most of the material I welded was the same thickness as his in the video

    Shouldn't his mix be 90% argon 7.5% helium and 2.5% CO2

    Ahh💡, your stitching routine acts as a metronome to gauge speed. I wonder if you actually used a metronome if it could help train consistency in your pace, stitch, etc. yup trying this lol

    I used c25, 308l wire on 304SS, 16 gauge 3" tubing and had a very hard time getting nice looking welds. I can't purchase tri mix here, just rent at a huge cost.

      Some other options are 98% Argon / 2% CO2 and 98% Argon / 2% Oxygen

    I like the push and pull way but I would do more push and pulling to get the pattern finer but may deposit more heat but yeah idk lower amps and go slower and more push and pulling and may get around dumping less heat into it... trail and error

    because I work for distillery product manufacturer in Boise Idaho ( Corson Distillery Systems ) companies making plenty of money but we have a long turn out right from from my point of view because of only tig process is being used and not modern technology attachments at this point

    Shouldn't you use 308? Isn't 309 for carbon to stainless?

    • @marcoscastelan1297
      @marcoscastelan1297 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that's what i was reading on 309 wire on the Lincoln electric website. But people use different wire and different gas so it seem to depend on who you ask...

    You guys, this is not how you weld stainless, if you have any splatter it's bad, stainless is ment to be welded hot

    Helium makes you talk like a duck, so I guess it's not that strange that it makes your weld sound funny, too.
    So what about 316 stainless? Any differences?

    Welded both sides to fast will have Por penetration

    • @jamesnurkka4006
      @jamesnurkka4006 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha this guy is one of the best welders on TH-cam. Welding stainless the penetration is higher than normal steel you have to be careful traveling to slow as SS will warp easily when cooling due to overheating.
