    From observation I've found that when it rains water is running straight into the lock down the inside of the door, this inturn with the cold temperatures is effecting the pre applied grease causing the lock to seize that's why this issue is more prevalent in wet winter months.
    That's why I chose wd40 as it repels the water while cleaning and isn't so much temperature effected but maybe you guys know of something better? if so comment below.
    There maybe faulty locks about but I don't believe this to be the issue simply a design flaw with the shape of the doors allowing water free access into the mechanism.

      Got the same problem on my S40, also in summer. Ended up replacing the entire door, haha.
      Actually what happened to mine was a truck that drove into my door, sadly couldn't prove it. But i "undented" the door and filled the rest up with putty. Winter came and I noticed that the lock got only actuated for about half. Figured that the rods got stuck due to friction. At least I got a better looking door out of it, which is a bonus.

    Brilliant little video- thank you! Quoted £500 + by main Volvo dealer and also an independent Volvo specialist - both said a new lock was required when all that was needed was to free it up and lubricate. No wonder the motor trade gets a bad name for ripping people off. Took me about 90 mins to get into the lock, lubricate and get it functioning again. Most of that time was spent locating the deadlock lever! Couple of tips - take a look at the other doors to see where its located and angle your screwdriver about 45 degrees down to get the best chance of flicking it back

    Thank you so much for the video! Saves me a lot of money for a 30 min fix. Couple of take aways from my experience. I have the doors with the 3 screws. So had to remove the panels of the pilar. Check if you have the 3rd screw if so remove the panels of the pilar first and unscrew. After that unscrew the other 2. Then remove the panel by lifting it up! I broke 2 clips by pulling the panel out, but I had to pull it straight up towards the window. After unclipping and removing the panel and removing the grey seal, I didn’t succeed with a screw driver. So after trying for 15 minutes I ended up using a fork for cheese fondue, took 3 minutes. The angle of 45 degrees was a perfect tip in the comments. I didn’t feel anything just moved and the 45 degree angle and pushed outwards of the car in different positions/angles. Then tried the lock and it worked 💯💯. Super easy, hope this will help somebody.

    Well, done, typical English instructional video, right to the point and no faff, no droning on telling us how great they are and why we should appreciate them so so much.

    Massive thanks mate, can't stress how grateful I am. Christmas coming up and MoT due 1st week in Jan. 30 mins labour and £8 for wd40 and t25 screw bits and jobs sorted. Deadlock was a fiddle but some good advice in the comments regarding aiming for metal bits located at 45° angle. Volvo charging me £400+ repair. Thank you good sir 🙏🏿.

    Just did this today. Took an hour; longest part was finding the deadbolt. Thanks a million for this mate; the door stuck on the side the childseat is on and I only had a couple more attempts at getting a toddler out from a carseat in the back of a v40 from the wrong side before either my back gave in, or I walked into the sea. You are an absolute legend.

    Followed this video today - problem sorted in an hour or so. Door hasn’t been opening since end of summer - and when I searched on Volvo forums and contacted a local Volvo dealer they were looking “anything from £500 to £900” 😮😮😮
    Thanks so much for this helpful guide - will help plenty of people save a fortune, and fix something that, in my opinion, should be a safety recall.

    Many thanks for this helpful video. Problem solved! One thing worth noting, which might be helpful to other people doing this repair: I took out the two torque head screws under the handle, and then found I needed to take a third one out, as shown in the video. It's in a really awkward place, I could only just get the screwdriver in there, and it took a few attempts to realise that it's a different size screw! (Thanks Volvo). The screws under the handle are T25, the third one is T20

      It was quite a long time ago Victor, so I can’t remember exactly how I did it. I do remember that it was really awkward tho! Just keep trying, that’s all I can say. Sorry to not be much help - I hope you manage it

      Same here! 2013 V40 D2. I had ‘the dreaded third screw’ also. Just managed to get it out with an Allen key shaped Torkx T25. So I think that mine is the same T25 as the handle - but what a job! Sorted now and extremely grateful for this video. I had the other door done by Volvo a few years ago and, in hindsight, I’d say that I was Royally ripped off. I was told it was a solenoid. Don’t think so.

    Great video, saved me a hefty garage fee. It's content like this that makes TH-cam so good. Thanks for taking the time to create this video and sharing it.
    My V40 model had that pesky third screw, to get into it I found that I just needed to remove the higher panel through which the front seat passengers seat belt opening comes through and the rubber seal. It's obviously not designed for getting at when you cannot open the door. I have actually left it off as it doesn't really make any difference and if I need to get the panel off again it will be a lot easier next time. Note that the third screw had a rubber cover on top of it that you need to prise off, the screw head is hidden so not obvious it is there until you find that getting the panel off doesn't work.
    A further tip is to actually lock the door with the central locking and confirm that it is still continuing to open and close after that (before you put everything back together). I found this out the hard way. On second time I sprayed more WD40 and repeated the open / close procedure and locking a few times before putting it back together. I get the feeling the recent frozen weather and days of sub zero temperatures may have played a part in the door no longer opening.

    Thanks for a great video! Helped me alot
    Had both rear doors stuck, didn´t help lubing them up though. Had to remove the lock mechanism altogether, on both locks the short wire that pulls the lock from the outer handle had come loose, put it back in place and now good as new!
    To remove the lock mechanism you need to remove the inner black panel, unclip the side window from the motor, remove the outer handle and it´s loose.
    Also if anyone has problems reaching the deadlock switch through the small hole in the inner panel, you can also remove a few bolts to release the inner panel a bit and bend it outwards, that way you can easily see the switch and release it!

      @64242592522 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks, I had exactly same idea to remove inner panel just a bit, but bottom screws prevented me from doing it, as I couldn't undo them due to the door being still closed. I just wriggled screwdriver in the hole and somehow with a lot of luck managed to open that door :)

    Thank you so much, resolved the same issue on my 2014 v40 cc. My car did have the little screw at the top behind the cover.
    Removing the pillar trim and door seal still leaves a very small gap to work with. I ended up putting a bit into the screw and turning it with pliers.
    Finding the deadbolt wasn't too bad,neither a small torch you can see it just to the right of where the door mechanism goes.
    All in all through 45 minutes start to finish. Perfect guide

    your a star what a great video, after a few attempts and being patent was able to release the deadlock with a screwdriver just by moving it around and at different angles was able to hear/feel a slight click and the door was able to open, you have saved me small fortune by not having to go a volvo dealership and getting ripped off.

    Amazing, just for information to others reading this, the screwdrivers you need are the torque heads I used a T20 and thankfully there was no screw on the side of the door (2015 model) 15 mins later with the help of this video and my iPhone torch I was done, and now I don’t have to pay the garage to do it before my MOT, thanks a million you should set up a tip ££££ pot! I would of definitely paid a tenner for this advice ☺️ 👏 👏 👏

    @FilmDat 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Really awesome video. I also got a quote from an official Volvo dealer asking around 400 euros to fix this.
    Took me an hour to remove the third screw. Used a grip plier with a long nose to tightly clamp a T45 bit to make small turns. I left this screw out when putting everything back together. Just in case. If I'd have to do it again on the other door I'd actually use a metal saw to cut more off the T45 bit so you have more room to play with. Yes, it's that tight between the door post and screw.
    As for the dead lock, played around with it for a while, didn't hear a sound and was like meh, what am I doing wrong? Just pulled that little string, tried opening the door from the outside and it seemed it had already worked. So for those of you struggling and waiting for the sound... it might helping checking every once in a while if it isn't already working ;)

    Thank you. The video is vey clear and educating. I managed to fix the issue step by step following the video. It took me two days to find the right spot for the dead lock and also invested in two thin long screwdrivers to make the job easier. The door now works normally and with no issues. As other comments, I surely saved at least a couple of hundred pounds, if not more. Thank you. Car Volvo V40 2013 and with three screws, two underneath the arm rest and one on a difficult spot corner to the door pilar. As the plastic top (seat belt location) and bottom were divided, I only had to removed the top and also moved the rubber seal out of the way to access to this screw. Happy days.

Mine did not, 2015 reg, I think Volvo done away with screw to make getting door card off easier. Seems like a common issue if you search for it and judging by the amount of thanks you've got. Surely a safety issue that needs a recall

    Really great video, thanks for posting. With your instructions I managed to fix the same issue on my 2015 v40 CC very easily this morning.
    Only points for others trying the same are (as some others have pointed out) to check the other side door for the extra bolt by the pillar, and that to flick the deadlock it’s easier with a longer thinner screwdriver or such (if not so long it’s also easier if you have a narrow handle) and that if you shine a torch in and press your head to the door and look down at 45deg you can see deadlock mechanism you need to aim for (it’s the one that looks a little further away).
    Thanks again, top video!

    Many thanks for this. I'm one of the many who has saved £100s from watching this video.
    A couple of tips...
    I couldn't get to the hidden third screw, but it didn't matter as I had enough access to fix it, by taking the two screws out and bending the door card out.
    I spent about 45 mins carefully fiddling around with the screwdriver trying to find the deadlock by touch. In the end I just wildly rattled the screwdriver around and it clicked open within about 5 seconds. If I'd done that in the first place it literally would've been a 10 minute fix.

    Thank you "Unnamedsquirrel" a lot! I mean it. I have V40/2015 even the color is like yours. And problem is exactly the same. I bought it 4,5 years used, last winter was not very cold and nothing happened. Entire last year everything was fine. But this winter, as temperature falls below zero, the show goes on. Once, NONE of all doors could be opened. I had to open driver's door with key and then could open passenger front door from inside. Both rear doors remained on deadlocks more than week, until temperature raised >zero. Then all doors worked excellent. Now again is cold but now only rear doors (one or both) randomly are and are not deadlocked. Honestly, I didn't expected such a flaw from Volvo, and car is in excellent condition. Seems like when summer comes, I will have to remove all door panels and make the best I can to somehow lubricate or whatever... Thanks for explanation :)

  • @azimaafzal555
    @azimaafzal555 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the video, you saved me £415 (what Volvo quoted to replace the lock). A few extra points, the hidden screw near the seatbelt pillar has a plastic cover, so is hard to spot (2013 v40 D2 RDesign). I had to fiddle around with the door lock cable, tugging it, pushing it around, this seem to release the deadlock, as screwdriver did not help or it was a combination of the 2. Applied WD40 and all good.

    Many thanks for this. I had the dreaded third screw - but got there in the end. My weapon of choice was ACF50. Hope it lasts!

    I tried this as a fix a while and didn't manage it . Had a incline I could Tey again and succeed ....and did !!!!!. I used a head torch to look inside the grommet hole to the deadbolt latch . It's worked for me. The door lock just jammed thru time . Some lube on the lock and it's as good as new . Hundreds saved from resorting to going volvo . Give it a try

    Hello unarmed squirrel! I did the job and it worked. I have a 2014 model and unfortunately had the dreaded hidden screws. I removed the plastic b pillar covers, Then used a small torx bit in some pliers in a perpendicular fashion. No damage to door card atall. Door card comes off easy. I thought I would mention, I looked inside the gromit hole with a torch. There is a fragile wiring loom inside on my model. It seems that the Best angle with the screwdriver is 45 degrees, taking care not to damage the loom! Maybe my lock is slightly different to yours, I don't know! Anyway it works now. Just to add something, apparently Volvo have said in an article that they will recall all cars with this lock system in summer 2021, and replace the locks for free!!! I hope this is the case but we shall see!

    Another thanks to add to all the others. I spent a grumpy hour wiggling my screwdriver in the hole! I tried loosening the inner panel but this did not help me. Cannot describe the action required but as if by magic I heard the click and had the eureka moment. Have sprayed liberally with wd40 from all angles and locked and unlocked many times to work it in. Hopefully this goes the distance. Thanks again.

    Thanks I've unlocked both back doors at a saving of £800 recently quoted by Volvo. Only problem I had was the door card did have a screw at the top by the the door pillar which was completely inaccessible with the door closed (great design Volvo) but I could bend the door card outwards and get in a dandelion removal tool I'd bent slightly and this flipped the deadlock straight away. Also as per Pacmancereal I used lithium grease on the lock so here's hoping they run fine. I haven't put the inaccessible screws back in just in case they go again.

    Winter is getting near, our Volvo v40 has the same issue now and probably this video will start getting hits again. Just in case need to preventively lube all the other doors locks that are still working.
    Would be nice of Volvo to recall their cars to fix this issue (or to lube the locks with some new more lasting lube) as it can be life threatening in situations (e.g. can't get kids out of the car), looking at the amount of comment, this seems a quality issue.

    Awesome! I thought I had to remove the door from the hinges. So great! Thank you! From what I hear though, this is an issue with the door lock mechanism itself so lubrication might not help.
    Since I live in sweden, I might interest you that Volvo has mentioned that they might recall those cars to fix this permanently. Search "Vi bilägare v40 baklås" and you will get a swedish motor magazine reporting on the issue with Volvo expressing that around summer 2021 they might call back the v40´s.

    • @unarmedsquirrel

      I honestly think it's a design flaw with the v40, I noticed when it rains water runs down the inside of the door and runs straights into where the lock is. I think because waters getting into the lock it's causing the deadlock to seize up especially if it's also freezing effecting the pre applied grease thats why it's sticking and Is happening more in winter months

    • @PetterAstrom
      @PetterAstrom 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just Followed your instructions and there is no way to open the door like you’re showing that is your angle with a screwdriver cracked should be perpendicular with the horizon? If I look carefully it looks like there is some thing inside the door but it’s more like 45° pointed towards the ground inside the door frame

    • @unarmedsquirrel
      @unarmedsquirrel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PetterAstrom I did this after I'd already unlocked mine so angle might not be exact, if u look at the video/image linked that's what your looking for inside the hole if u shine in a torch might take some time to get the right spot
