Jeremy Clarkson travels to Belfast to conduct an extremely thorough test of the Renaultsport Twingo 133 involving a tunnel, a ferry and the actor Ross Kemp.
Meanwhile, Richard Hammond investigates ways to speed up your next summer holiday through the crucible of motorsport as he invents the brand new sport of airport vehicle racing.
At the other end of the intellectual spectrum, James May tests the new Vauxhall Insignia VXR in the company of Margaret Calvert, the lady responsible for inspired design philosophy behind the familiar British road sign.
Finally, Jeremy is on and off the track in the BMW X5M, Audi Q7 V12 and the latest version of the supercharged Range Rover.

Hi there, ex-TG runner and assistant here. Yes, they really did roll the car in the tunnel. This is just cut for continuity reasons. The stunt nearly went wrong at the end when the car lost momentum and almost crashed but thankfully there were two or three Renault's available to the crew. No CGI or camera trickery here! It's being filmed from a chase car.
Yup totally going to believe the credentials of a random person on the internet with random letters as name.
Hi, official jeremey clarkson here. This man is correct
@@maverickM4A1carbine hi there, Pope John Paul here, I second that.
Hello Jesus here, yep I can confirm this man is telling the truth
@@shibinmi why is it so hard to believe that stunt drivers exist?
1:27 lamps in tunnel to provide better light for film. Then none for the flip but orange/red light behind. Creative editing
Probably a lot more than that. It was certainly a stunt driver as they didn't show the in-car footage even though that would be the best footage. Also, yeah, a different tunnel.
Well it would be hard to drive through lamps
The cars hazards went on as soon as it’s front wheel hit the end after the roll
They removed the lights so they don’t get damaged
My question isn't about driving upside down, but rather how on Earth do you manage to get a car into a sewer?
You flush it down the toilet
11 years late, but it's no secret really. You just build the sewer around it.
I never saw this episode. It's probably been mentioned already, but it was claimed that one of the stuntmen in The Italian Job (the original Michael Caine movie) successfully did that in a Mini. Not sure why it was never in the film... probably too fantastic to believe.
That scene was in film. It was just before the river crossing. I think
When i was about 17 a mate of mine was found late at night by the police, in his mum's Mini, having successfully wedged it in the pedestrian underpass in the town in Wiltshire where we lived. He'd driven in down the steps and then couldn't turn it round enough to get it through the tunnel.
At court he said he'd only recently seen The Italian Job (etc etc) and it had inspired him to give it a go. He got let off with a fine.
It was in the local papers 😂
I've looked at it in slow-mo off the TV and it looks real. When the BBC pay's for effects there are always tell tale signs that it isn't quite right, but even frame by frame I can't fault this. If it is CG then it's the best CG in history!
its real, its just a stunt driver not Jeremy.
Why would they fake it tho
@@420crim3 so they wouldn't have to deal with the liability of the risk involved. that being said, stunt drivers will usually agree to take these risks
I love that they used Gears of War music in this. Awesome.
I remember this episode first for its use of the Gears of War soundtrack
he was so close with the m/s - mph conversion; it was actually 39 mph
That extra 2 mph doesn’t make that much of a difference. He did the equation to just barely make the loop not to actually ride it.
It's real. The red lights in the tunnel is the ambulance coming in case he crashes. I saw this on tv, you can see them pulsating as they got closer. It was a different take than when he was talking, and they may have used a stunt driver. But someone did it.
apparently the Saleen S7 has so much downforce that it could literally stick to the cieling. it's something to do with the aerodynamics on the underside of the car creating a vacumn that pulls the car down. i forget exactly how fast you have to go, though.
Reminds me of the Tokyo map in asphalt 8
The music at 0:31 has me expecting some Locust Drones to appear from the sides and blow the car up. GoW soundtrack FTW!
Thats hysterical
Gears of War - Trainwreck (Locust Theme) is the soundtrack btw.
thumbs up to the Gears of War music in the background!
you managed to do a full barrel role inside the sewer that they couldn't do in the actual 1969 film
Thank god smellevision isn't invented yet
Its a shame the lights in the tunnel weren't in the animation of him going upside down. Woulda fooled me if they were
@DroidTech this is real
this is real but they went to the bit with no lights
@@sauliusltcool6902 lol
@@Grandpa_Joe lol I actually thought this was real
It actually is real, it's called editing together and lighting
Lol what happened to the lights in the tunnel?
I guess they left a bit without any lights and that's where he did it
***** you guys for real? he said at the start it was a sewage tunnel....
Diff Per we know that, but you can see that they've put up tubelights inside it so we can c the car
Probably didn't put lights at the spot he was going to do the stunt so he doesn't hit them
I'm surprised he managed to keep it upright on the exit, even tipping over.
17.5 meters per second in mp/h is 39.1
I believe that is why he almost totaled the car.
It's liters not meters
@@chrissss696 liters is a measurement of volume
Say a package of milk may contain 1.5 liters of milk....
Meters is a measurement of distance
@@Kasmuller well, i know, but Jeremy said "liters", the display wasn't showing the speed
@@chrissss696 he was saying meters but he did it clarkson style
Omg he actually did it, I'm dying.
rip
you must use a gumpert apollo
It won't fit
Or Saleen S7
00:03 That sounds eerily like the opening credits to Rubber Johnny.
He sounds well nervous when he was talking about the metres per second and the speed he needs to be going
@lotsofotherstuff totally agree, Jeremy is a very good driver, and very brave too, but this just don't seems to me like he would be doing it.
1:27 am I the only one who thinks it looks fake as fuck?
Yes
Sk'2500 I'm pretty sure it's not fake. I'm 100% sure it's not Jeremy driving the car though.
+Sk'2500 also the lights in the tunnel seem to disappear.
+Scott Kosasih different filming points its all just mishmashed together to look cool looks real to me
I actually saw a talk by the guy who did the maths behind this thing and he said that it wasn't Jeremy Clarkson who did the stunt
epic. that was great i actually thought it wasnt going to land
awesome :D
stunt driver tho,
(but Jezza did do most of it)
it was on the radio in belfast a while back
This is actually amazing O_O
epic choice for an epic game gears and a epic show of war train wreck track
Gears theme!!! Made my day! :)
Some Turkish guy says " The brain is free " İ love this man. Forever Jezza
Well, he did "go" upside down in the tunnel. And that was the question! So, it worked!
The song is composed by Kevin Riepl - Train Wreck- Locust Theme
The song is actually called "Gears of War." Not to be confused with the song of the same name by Megadeth.
You'd have to be going at 39 miles per hour. Pretty close Jeremy!
I'm pretty sure you could go as fast as you want (as long as it reaches a certain speed) and all you would have to change is the angle that you turn the wheel. The speed of the car doesn't matter, the acceleration does.
It was a minimum speed you idiot not a precise one
Surely it makes no difference how fast you go ALONG the tunnel? (aerodynamics notwithstanding).
It's the speed around the loop that will give you the inertia to make a full circuit.
True but you can’t move a car perfectly sideways so the forwards speed aids to the momentum that you need to get up and down again
ha. i was just logging in to say that i didnt reckon that was clarkson in the car
This comment is 10 years old jeez
@@awesomethings2310 oh man, what a time that was. 2010, a new decade.
so this is the car for me. thank you top gear
Oh Shit! The car did actually flip! That was so cool!
The soundtrack that is used is from Gears of War ^^
Top gears of war
they really need to test or actually pit an f1 car in a tunnel and make it drive upside down. in 2012 the formula 1 announcers said it was about 70mph to create enough downforce to do that. holy shit
I remember that from Extreme Machines! It was CGI but nonetheless incredible!
not really... it needs that excess down force to counter the car from lifting at speed (cuz there is space between the ground and the under carriage it'll lift the car) so it will drive upside down for a few seconds till the car lifts or falls in this case, then the wheels will lose traction no more go no more down force car goes crash
@wolfmankurd I just meant that approx 17 m/s should be the right speed to go, not that it is 37 instead of 39
Hats off Jeremy
@divine101 no idea about the s7 but the veyron claims to do this in a bigger road tunnel at over 200 mph, bbc hopes they can show wether this theory is corrrect this year
Bloody marvelous!
Well with science you can prove it that the downfore is more than gravity so yes you can. same with a saleen 27 twin turbo.
LOOK: 1:31 : no lights on the side; then 1:33 Lights !
this puts a smile on my face
they probably have them for maintenance work and turned them on so he could see
@Stang70Fastback88
Consider that we never catch a glimpse of the camera car in front.
Wow, I love the Italian Job.
خواطر
@danonino2511 no its not, the car just kind of punced upside down, if it where fake it would be showing the car driving upside down for more than 20 seconds or so
that was beyond legit
The Italian Job right there
@hummerskickass Autocorrect didn't do that,
The fact that "O" is right next to "I" did that :P
Me: I want a Schumacher SLS AMG stunt at home
Mom: We have a Schumacher SLS AMG stunt at home
The a Schumacher SLS AMG stunt at home:
the music... the music its from Gears of War!... awesome,,
Well that was epic.
loving the gears of war music!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyone else notice that they're using the soundtrack from Gears of War?
animations dont hit the blinker with a accident, see thats not fake, have it been fake the car havent done right that, so funny i wished i could tried that self :)
Where did the tunnel lights disappear to during the car roll
I work in movie vis effects and it's not fake..
what the hell he did it now that was cool
Probably a stunt driver, but a fantastic stunt nonetheless. My jaw dropped when he actually tried it and nearly toppled over. Wow.
Gears of War soundtrack anyone?
yeah I was thinking the same thing
UrBr0 rly? didnt notice
I noticed a couple times on top gear they used a song from Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
Why do people think this is fake?
Are you blind? The lights along the wall are not there when the car flips. There's a good chance they did actually do the flip but whether or not it's with Jeremy and in the same place is unknown. Also, 37mph is not fast enough to drive upside down, 200 wouldn't be enough in this car.
well he didnt ''drive'' it upside down, but rather flipped it, the emergency blinkers came on aswell, indicating that the car thought it was going to flip over (which it did)
Michael Dunn Jeremy didn't do it, I saw a talk by the guy who designed the stunt and he said it wasn't Jeremy who did it.
This isn't fake, if it was they would make it look a bit better.
@hercegovac00 Except that engines need gravity for the oiling system and fuel pickups to work, upside down with no oil pressure a formula one engine would eat itself very quickly.
My turds go down there!! lol
@Jay18Jay You know there's footage of him filling out insurance documents or something before they did this? Even if it were to go wrong 37MPH accident in that environment wouldn't do much harm at all ...
so this is the car for me to buy if i want to go upside down in a tunnel.
DO A BARREL ROLL!
in my opinion doing a loop isn't considered "going upsed down"
Holy shit a barrel roll
try to just make continious loops arownd the tunnel that will be just outrageous nice vid
Define outrageous
0:33 Gears of War music
It's cool, but it probably wasn't don in one take, because they are filming him from every side and you don't see cameras anywhere -.-
@JuKa3177
If you watch Top Gear enough you'd know Gumpert has already found an ideal tunnel to prove their car has enough aero to drive upside down on the roof of the tunnel. I guess we're just waiting on that. lol.
Hmmm - why do the lights in the sewer disappear when it cuts to the front of the car...
it is the gears of war music.
@wolfmankurd he calculates it correctly in m/s.
lol this is something a crimincal would do during a high speed pursuit xD
The Gumpert has enough downforce to go upside down in a tunnel but this tunnel here is too small and the Gumpert is too wide and low. The whole car will be scratched like hell.
@Andreask93 I know they, I've been watching the show from the beginning, never heard Gears of War music. :)
There's not much aerodynamics in play here.... He just transferred the car's momentum from a straight line into centrifugal force and a lil more momentum and he could have pulled it off Perfect. Its Not fake.
When i bought my current car i asked this of the seller. They got the joke and it was a sale.
Don't worry about it.
Obviously it's not faked cause he fucked it up majorly and almost crashed. If it was faked it would've gone around perfectly.
Its not fake, but i doubt Clarckson was in the car during the jump
Why would a sewage tunnel be fully lit?
at least he almost made it
how is it
If this goes wrong,I'm in deep shit......
yea it is fake, u can tell its animated but its still funny as shit lol
