I met a woman (no romantic interest in her) in Cologne in the late eighties. I was traveling alone, living out of a backpack, staying in youth hostels, and really have difficulty finding my way around because my German was limited. But this woman was so friendly. She took me under her wing and showed me around the city for the day. I will always remember her kindness.

Es ist einfach super dass die Leute auf der Straße nicht so viel über Köln im Sinne der Architektur, Straßen, Gebäude, Verkehr usw. gesprochen haben, sondern am meisten über ihre Mitbürger*innen. Kölner*innen sind offen und gesellig, und wie gesagt häufig etwas durch die Blumen sagen, um andere Menschen nicht zu beleidigen. Tatsächlich sind die Menschen A und O einer Gemeinschaft 😊. Vielen Dank für ein so schönes Video, mit so vielen netten Menschen verschiedener Älter, Herkunft, Gender und Identitäten...
I was so glad to hear about the mikvahs (Jewish ritual baths) and the importance of remembering the Jewish people who once lived in Köln. Mikvahs are wonderful. They are not just for women who are menstruating; people of all genders and ages can go to mikvahs. It’s a ritual cleansing that can be used to mark all sorts of life transitions, grieving, healing. Köln sounds like a beautiful city; I hope to be able to visit one day.

Ich bin nur ein Tag in Köln, und habe es überraschend gefunden, dass der Kölner Dom so wunderschön ist. Meistens finde ich religiöse Gebäude nicht so interessant, aber es war total fantastisch.
Ich möchte zurückgehen und mehr Zeit da passen.
I really appreciate the older gentleman pointing out the mikveh baths and Jewish historic sites. As a Jew learning German it’s of course something often on my mind and it’s nice to see some space for us still even if it’s just respecting important sites like cemeteries. I went to Austria (from the US) this year and though I usually wear my yarmulke, I found it safer to take it off while I traveled and I was disappointed by this if not particularly surprised. I went to a couple museums with Jewish exhibits in Graz and Vienna and those were very nice but they were also filled with very painful history. Anyway, thanks Easy German!

The only Platt I heard from the elderly gentleman with the walker was "wat" instead of "was." Did I miss something?
Also, I'm kind of taken aback by a few of the descriptions of Kölners: friendly, open to strangers, smiling, superficial and not always reliable as friends. This is exactly what Germans who don't much care for Americans say about us! So contrary to what one of your respondents said (don't visit Köln, the Hauptbahnhof stinks), it seems to me that Americans who want to visit Germany should make a point of visiting Köln! - Delighted to hear about the Mikveh baths; I had no idea you could find them in Köln.
His Platt is really not that strong.
Besides "wat", another thing he said was "jesprochen" instead of "gesprochen". So the first g is pronounced a little bit more softly.
@@batze3105 Yeah, my Oma used Platt for a few words now and then, mostly for comic effect. Maybe I heard wrong, but the first time he said "ging" it sounded like "hing" whereas the second "ging" sounded more standard. Alas, he probably doesn't have many Platt speakers with whom to converse anymore.😥
In the past, almost every German city and community had its own dialect or even language. Unfortunately, these are dying out and very few remain. In the past, dialects were even taught in schools (until the 90s), but that no longer exists. Nowadays, schools even try to teach children standard German because some of them don't speak German.
I have travelled once to Cologne and I have very good impression about both city and people there. City is so clean and buildingings are constructed very nice way. Also, people are so friendly and importantly strictly follow the rules (I felt that it is even more common than other parts of Germany).
Cologne is definetly not clean! But it is friendly indeed.

Wir waren gestern in Köln. Es gibt viel zu viele Autos, das stimmt. Es ist ganz unmöglich die größeren Straßen zu überqueren, weil die Ampeln gar nicht für den Menschen eingestellt sind.
If there is one dialect I'd love to learn, it's kölnisch. Here and there it is a bit like Dutch. And it sounds great.
Cologne is the reason I’m learning German. Hope to go back next year to make it three years in a row. An incredible city, not the most beautiful aesthetically, but that only adds to its character. And the people really make the city ❤ Kolsch is the best way to drink beer. Your drink never gets warm and I’ve never been left waiting for a Köbes to give me another beer. High praise from an Irishman 😂
I live in the city and could not say that people are more welcoming than elsewhere. The political and infrastructural problems are so severe, I never have seen anything like it before. If it wasn't my home and my family wasn't here, I'd be long gone. The guy with the glasses was on point, Cologne overestimates itself.
So cool you visited Nippes :) I have a small correction about the subtitles. At 6:53 when the lady talks about the Fahrradpolitik she says "Wir sin an der Neusserstr hier", it's the name of the street where you were filming, not some "new street".

Ich habe ein Jahr in Köln gewohnt und habe sehr viele unfreundliche Menschen kennen gelernt (und ich bin selbst sehr aufgeschlossen und spreche jeden positiv und freundlich an). Außerdem gibt es in vielen "Vierteln" gar keine Kölner mehr. Auf der Straßenbahnlinie, wo ich täglich fahren musste, habe ich fast nur osteuropäische Sprachen gehört, kein Deutsch oder Kölsch.
Ein Großteil meiner Verwandten sind im übrigen Kölner.

Diese Geschichte ist wahr: Ich bin in Köln in ein Cafe gegangen und war dort komischerweise ganz alleine. Ich hab einen Kaffee bestellt und wurde noch freundlich auf die Sonnenterrasse geführt, weil ich den Weg nicht fand. Als ich dann zahlen wollte, sagte der Wirt: "Das wird schwer - wir haben heute gar nicht geöffnet." ❤Köln❤

Tolles Video! Ich liebe es, wenn ihr nach anderen Städten in Deutschland reisen um Episoden zu drehen. Und jetzt will ich auch nach Köln, weil die Stadt und die Leute so nett aussehen, obwohl die Fahrradpolitik würde mir auch sehr nervig sein! (Ich glaube jedoch, dass es kaum schlimmer als in meiner Heimatstadt sein kann!)

Kölner sind bekannt für ihren Humor und ihre Lebensfreude. Köln ist auch für seine traditionsreiche Karnevalskultur bekannt, und die Kölner sind stolz auf ihre Brauchtümer und ihre Liebe zur Musik. Die Domstadt ist multikulturell und beheimatet Menschen aus verschiedenen Nationen, was zu einer vielfältigen und weltoffenen Atmosphäre beiträgt. Die Kölner schätzen auch ihre lokale Küche, insbesondere Kölsch-Bier und regionale Spezialitäten wie Himmel un Ääd (Himmel und Erde) und Rheinischer Sauerbraten. Liebe euch aus Algerian 🇩🇿🇩🇪♥️
Obwohl ich seit 4 Jahren in Düsseldorf lebe, finde ich Köln wirklich super. Der Himmel ist die Mentalität von Köln zusammen mit Altbier ;)

Yes I know that is a History behind the city and many carry a Dreading Heart memories of WWII, and even though if it was rebuilt Quickly, the Architecture is Beautiful... I just expressed what I Like about Cologne as a City in Germany..... Peace ✌️🕊️

Mein Arbeitgeber hat mich 8 Wochen nach Köln gesendet für eine Ausbildung. Ich habe Köln kennengelernt, ICH LIEBE KÖLN. Diese Stadt ist für immer in meinem Herzen, aber leider komme ich fast nicht mehr dahin . Und wenn, muss ich arbeitsbedingt wieder sehr schnell weg (meistens innerhalb eine Stunde) 😢
Ich erinnere mich an mein erstes Mal im Winter in Köln. Ich bin allein ins Museum gegangen. Da war eine Museumsmitarbeiterin, die mir das Museum gezeigt hat, weil ich eine Ausländerin bin. Sie war so freundlich und höflich. Oder der Besitzer vom Souvenirgeschäft, der mich ein kleines Geschenk gegeban hat, als ich ihm einen schönen Tag gewünscht habe. Für mich ist Köln die herzlichste Stadt in Deuschland.
While may tourist gather at the Cologne Cathedral for a tour inside, many miss the Roman Museum down the way on the same plaza. There are some rather stunning exhibits of ancient Roman Life therein. As your team did with Berlin in finding a local historian to give a tour of major points of the city, perhaps in the future you may do the same for other large German Cities. Meanwhile a link to the local Tourist Information Office or Kiosk would be helpful for those that are inspired by your shows to learn more, when you feature a city. Then there is this subculture of Artist that do the colored chalk drawings on the Cologne Cathedral Plaza. They always have things to do and say about life in Cologne.
I was there, in the first week of June, this year. The Roman Museum has moved. Looking at a map trying to remember where it is, I think it's in Hahnenstrasse.

What distinguishes the Easy Language Programs from all of the other language programs on YT is the ability and emphasis on not just learning the grammar of the other language (which every one else does) but on the: culture and lifestyles, the festivals and open markets to buy food and other things, local language differences of a region, history, and every day speech of the local people in having a conversation with someone else! That is from my 30 or more other YT Channels I listen to for learning other languages and the regional dialects of a country. This extra emphasis that the Easy Language Family has used, makes for learning another language much easier to learn. I can not tell you how many times I have heard, " I studied German for x many years in school, but now that I am hear in Germany, Austria or Switzerland I can not understand a word of what is said or know how to respond in German." More often than not it is the Culture Shock that gets in the way and the locals speaking the vernacular form of the language, rather than the formal language. Somehow your Easy Language Teams have managed to help overcome those barriers. So at least to my thinking, it makes your efforts such a success. Which is why adding cultural sites and activities of the local people in a major city is an important part of learning a language. @@EasyGerman

"Nass" beschreibt einen Zustand, bei dem eine große Menge Flüssigkeit vorhanden ist, während "feucht" einen leicht oder nur teilweise "nassen" Zustand anzeigt. ☺️

Dear Cari and Janusz, thanks a lot for your videos. The last time that I was in Germany was in 2011, and now after 12 years I went there. I was really shocked with train delays. I almost lost 50% of connecting trains. Even I was about to miss my flight. Also, another day, I came from Paris to Cologne by Thalys. There was a delay for 3 hours. I missed every train to my last destination in Germany and I missed my hotel reservation and I had to book another hotel in the city...They said it was due to German network. Would you please make a podcast or video about it. So people that are coming, know about it and arrange their trip considering it.

Oh damn, yeah that's a big topic at the moment here. 😅
oh yes‼, DON'T TRAVEL BY TRAIN THIS YEAR IN THE AREA OF KÖLN, WUPPERTAL, DORTMUND... too many construction sites and extrem delays. Today I had a 1,5 hours delay on the train and almost missed my plane at Köln airport. Köln train station is total chaos, always. Plan extra 2 hrs for train connections around Köln!!!
Köln airport is also bad in any aspect.
And I was in Münster today, there were some refugees (so people, who anyway don't understand easily the whole system of the train connections in Germany and train stations...) who showed me their train tickets and asked me "where is platform 1" and I found out that in Münster there exists no platform No. 1. We went to the information desk and the guy said, totally disinterested in our problem "that was printed incorrectly at the ticket, it is platform 3", ...so all people who didn't figured this out, missed this train.
I make experiences like this frequently with the German trains, you always need savings of maybe 200€ for extra tickets (or taxis or...) in case you miss connections etc., for example if you miss the announcements of changing platforms, ... that is very foreigner- unfriendly, that they make announcements via speakers with very bad sound quality (even a German barely understands) where they say that they change the platform where your train is going and if you don't hear this in the right moment, you miss your train and they don't care...
Köln ist ist einfach die beste Stadt, die man sich voorstellen kann. Vielleicht nicht die schönste aber egal. Ich wohne schon 20 Jahre in der wunderschönen belgischen Stadt Gent, aber vermisse immer wieder die Stummung von Köln❤
