if anyone here liked the way derringer was playing do yourself a favour and listen to more derringer including.... tabacco road, from the roadwork album by Edgar winter. funky music from the johnny winter and album. show biz kids by steely dan. derringer plays slide. eat it by weird al yankovich. of course any one of his songs that appeared on his numerous solo albums I dig the performance 3 great guitar players playing rockin roll
Derringer never really had the chance to hang for days in the woodshed. He hit the big time at 15 with hang on sloopy, then the mccoys became the AND to johnny winter AND. I really think it is impossible to compare these guys. Plus steve was diggin what rick was doing. and the other guitarist was having a ball. If we were talking about pat travers, lessile west, or trower vrs morse then i agree no contest but derringer is a very well rounded guitarist.
Rick himself stated in the NIGHT OF THE GUITAR 2 video that he thought music is spiritual, but there IS a sense of competition, and he said "thats a good thing.!" I agree
@Asilazi Steve Morse is certainly holding back here as his guest is Rick Derringer on stage. Rick's guitar work with Steely Dan ("Chain Lightning" solo, slide work on "Show Biz Kids") are good examples of his taste and technique, but he can't touch Steve on an all out technical level. Shawn Lane told me in 1997 that his favorite Steve Morse playing was pre-1976, and that he almost dreaded jamming with Steve because it always ended up with too many notes ("Tumeni Notes")!
Nice Find, i do not think Steve is "Holding back" I do not think he intentionally would want to play worse than Johnny Winter or Danny Johnson who never hold hold back with Rick on this song...Rick held back his solo though and instead did some nice improve with Steve who not only is a great player but always comes across as a great guy with a distinctive style that sounded cool here.
I agree that steve was not holding back, he is way too seasoned for that, he plays courteously what is required for the tune, tasty, sufficient, pleasing, to enhance the tune the way it is written with his feel and style..
Steve showed mercy and respect, but, Steve is by far, ..I mean, by far, as in like , light years in terms of anything played on the fret board. Very nice of him to let Derringer struggle along trying to make himself look as though he could compete with the likes of Morse, and yep, he did try, kind of sad. I still enjoyed it though, Derringer did write the song, sang it...sorta. not like JW of course, but he did ok. Derringer is a dedicated musician, but Steve, he simply rules the Universe.
My old girl friend has a pic of me playing a Steinberger with Rick on one side and Steve on the other, at a Chicago NAMM show . Not the best playing for them by all the guys in this must have been 100% improv
I agree with some of the others on this post- I get to see two of my favorite guitar players; pretty cool, way cool!! They are two very different animals on guitar style-wise- I really hate the "this guys better/ that guys better stuff", leave that to kids because it is childish. Thanks for posting, never knew they played together, a treat!
oh. and I have played all leads on that album, but dont limit myself to what others play. thats not bragging, thats just fact..many many unknown guitar players can play anything Derringer can..can that be said of Morse?..think not
Haha, if anyone says their favorite all time guitarist is rd, then i imagine, if your a guitar player, your palette is very limited, as opposed to Steve morse, who can teach you anything from celtic, country, fusion, shred, to even hard rock! Deep purple! So...yeah, morse, is better then most.
Derringers riffs are old school and easy to replicate, Morse can play anything Derringer can...anything, Can this be said about Derringer..not a chance. I've followed both Musicians and Steve is light years better than a Derringer, And ye, I've been playing guitar for years.can play anything Derringer plays, Wish I could say I could play light Morse..But can't.
Also guitar shredding doesn't imply your a musician Derringer can read music, sing, produce, write, shred. Amoung the claptons, trowers etxc.. those types of guitarists he is my favorite and imo way better. Also Probably one of the best rock / blues rhythm guitarist i ever heard
i am a rick fan from the 70s,not heard of steve till he joined D.P,but that on C.D not showed his skilled, and what i seen his stuff here,he was more jazzier player, but i love this clip, showing him and rick rockin
Any1 who rates them is strictly based on your personal taste also, who can rate a guitarist on 1 poorly recorded performance. Derringer was playing with Hendrix when Morse was hearing n seeing guitars for the 1st time. They are both 2 of my all time favs. Steve is over the top good, and if u want to hear Rick rip it up listen to beyond the universe on Derringer live.
Not sure anyone is really holding back. They are playing a song with a short trade of licks for the solo. I don't know how you can even compare steve to rick. Is rick better, of course not. However rick , unlike most rock / blues players is one of the few that could hang and figure out what to do if they were playing one of steve's song.
@Asilazi Rick Derringer's slide guitar work on Steely Dan's "Show Biz Kids" was relatively common knowledge as it appeared on the "Countdown To Ecstacy" album credits, yet his superb solo on "Chain Lightning" from the "Katy Lied" album was a mystery ( I asked Rick himself which solos he played for the Dan aside from SHOW BIZ KIDS & the only answer I got was "CHAIN LIGHTNING"). I told Rick that I was surprized & thought the "Chain Lightning" solo was Larry Carlton, he grinned: "No,that was me!"
Certainly steve has respect for rick or he wouldn't let him up on stage. The crowd was diggin it and so was the band. Plus the band knew the song and either steve or the other guitarist harmonized the riff. That harmonized riff is not part of the popular release of rockin roll hoochie koo. It is on the orginal release from johnny winter and. Another piece of info, on the weird al song eat it, thats rick playing the lead.
Not a great era for Rick the BC Rich years, horrible tone and vibe imho! But these days he can do a very decent Hank Garland/Joe Pass and his faith is genuine for his later life! Can hear Howard Roberts in there too!
@DogCatchersBand give rick more credit i don't think steve has to hold back because of rick, steve is a personal friend of mine and i am not arguing he is one of the best but i dont agree he was holding back because of rick
Johnny's thumb technique freeing up his index and ring fingers can never be copied. I have seen both Steve and Rick. This is same guitar that I saw him play with the Dixie Dregs- telecaster with Dimarzio and built-in pre-amp, Rick is on another planet... just plug him in and crank him up and let'er loose. If want to enjoy some of Rick's more techie stuff listen to "Rhapsody in Red" with master assist Tim Bogert and the legendary drummer, Carmine Appice... DBA!
You obviously don't know Derringer's ability. I've seen Morse and Derringer live many times. They're both equal, maybe even an edge to Derringer. He plays many styles of music not just rock. Actually is an accomplished jazz guitarist too.
Wow..hurt me there..got me cryin Got a list a mile long with whats better than derringer. Granted, he may be better than me..But most of what he does can be done by most gargage band kids. How do I know this. I'm a 55 year old Muscian, been playing guitar for 43 years. So ye..i kinda know what I'm commenting on Morse is better, as is Satch,Vai,Malmsteen..ect..He backed Winter..not the other way around And damn..you sure do know how to cry
Asilazi, you owe it to your self to listen to Its my own fault by johnny winter and live. Try and ignore the leads and listen to the rythm guitar that is some of the finest rythm playing and that is rick back in 1970. Then look for rockin roll medely or great balls of fire that is rick playing the lead.
It's not "holding back" when you play in a style appropriate for the musicians with whom you share the stage. If you are playing with Chuck Berry or Levon Helm and you start sweeping arpeggios, you are a tasteless --------.
u need xanax guy.. great album Live and..Winter did most of the work..in fact, it's my favorite album..I'm a Winter fan..but just to make sure get the facts. Guitar Player magazine held Steve Morse as Best Overall Guitarist for 5 consecutive years! a distinction shared only by Steve Howe of Yes. Check it out yourself..ignorance is never a good thing..just check it out for yourself. Sorry, but Derringer, great "Entertainer", not as good as Steve, on any level of Guitar playing.
@Michael Rollo you sound like a ten year old kid on the school ground " my dad can beat up your dad" . they are both great players, different styles, it's not a contest shut up and enjoy the music!
hate to jump in late, but u'r dead wrong. Not only is music subjective but it is physically and psychologically impossible for someone to "play everything so-and-so can" - steve can't play ol' 3 note BB King - he can't - u know why? He's not BB King. Steve can't play Fripp or Joe Walsh and he can't play Blackmore though he can copy professionally. He may be technically proficient,& u may like him but you can never use the word "better" period.
Sorry little one, you don't know what you're talking about. Derringer is superior on so many levels, not just rock. Morse is great, granted, but he has one sound, one feel, one level. That's it. And I've seen both live many times. How familiar are you with Derringer's body of work?
Then I'd say, that Steve plays Derringer better than Derringer could..understand that? Derringer is struggling in this video. Sloppy playing, granted, unlike Deringer, but still..it's sloppy, and his sound is horrible, stretching is pitiful, how do I know?. I play guitar as well as Derringer,in fact many people. Many, many unknown musicians play as well and better than Derringer. Derringer got his name from Winter..both of em. Whom he followed..never led.
Love Derringer!!
Great video and music too!!!
Rick's still gorgeous in this video.
I hate these so-called guitar "wars". Rather see two guitarists just jammin with one another, making a good sound and having fun.
Just listen "Knighted by the blues" and everyone can realize the Derringer mastery.
Beyond the Universe is another Derringer tour de force.
if anyone here liked the way derringer was playing do yourself a favour and listen to more derringer
including....
tabacco road, from the roadwork album by Edgar winter.
funky music from the johnny winter and album.
show biz kids by steely dan. derringer plays slide.
eat it by weird al yankovich.
of course any one of his songs that appeared on his numerous solo albums
I dig the performance 3 great guitar players playing rockin roll
Smoking!
@divgtrslingr I agree. Love them both for different reasons.
Exactly, Derringer is studio grade.
Derringer performs on Winter Live ! Wich automatictly brings him on Top 5
He can sing, write, play and read music.
All American boy!
Rick himself stated in the NIGHT OF THE GUITAR 2 video that he thought music is spiritual, but there IS a sense of competition, and he said "thats a good thing.!" I agree
Also, to see rick play more then just rock, do a search for rhapsody in red 2-4-2011
Lynn Ma

I used to hang with shawn in the mid 80s...Willys days!
Nice Rick.

This is not war this is splender

Wow what did Rick do to you? You could not carry his guitar pick
you cant say whos better..Rick invented most of these riffs...Steve added alot of his own shit
Saw the Dixie Dregs in the 80s. Tennessee Theater in Knoxville i think. Or memphis. Hell.
They damn killed it.
Derringers riffs are old school and easy to replicate, Morse can play anything Derringer can...anything, Can this be said about Derringer..not a chance. Michael Rollo you an ass hole rick and Johnny rule
Yet, we all know who Derringer is. Who are you again?
Also guitar shredding doesn't imply your a musician
Derringer can read music, sing, produce, write, shred. Amoung the claptons, trowers etxc.. those types of guitarists he is my favorite and imo way better. Also Probably one of the best rock / blues rhythm guitarist i ever heard

also check out rapsody in red by dba. derringer bogart and appice
I'll take Rick over Steve any day.
If Walter asked Rick to play on any SD tune just tells us what a man Rick really is as a musician
one more for good luck....

Before the G3 was even thought of
Not a great era for Rick the BC Rich years, horrible tone and vibe imho! But these days he can do a very decent Hank Garland/Joe Pass and his faith is genuine for his later life! Can hear Howard Roberts in there too!
sorry type all that into you tube search box
@DogCatchersBand give rick more credit i don't think steve has to hold back because of rick, steve is a personal friend of mine and i am not arguing he is one of the best but i dont agree he was holding back because of rick
Rick kicked both their butts! Just sayin'!
who's the third guitarist?
Dieter Roesberg, of the German Fachblatt magazine that organised the German Steve Morse Band tour
johnny winter greatballs of fire look for live 71 part 1
last one check out somebody lone me a dime from rick derringer .. jackhammer blues
Terrible tone, but who knows what he had to play through.
cool. too bad that the sound sucks. oh well
Both great but Derringer's teacher can still outplay both. Johnny Winter did things that can't be copied !!!
Johnny's thumb technique freeing up his index and ring fingers can never be copied. I have seen both Steve and Rick. Don't matter who can play who....It's HOW it's played. If you don't get that you're hardly a musician

also..one dimensional..now who's ignorant?..Morse is the most versital guitarist there is. Do your home work kid

It's not a duel. Its what we average guitar players can't do
Hey, didn't mean to piss you off..just sayin..good grief
Have a nice day

Sorry.Think derringer ripped Morse a new one.Stuck to the basics and went nuts.Plus he sung.
Sorry little one, you don't know what you're talking about. Derringer is superior on so many levels, not just rock. Morse is great, granted, but he has one sound, one feel, one level. That's it. And I've seen both live many times. How familiar are you with Derringer's body of work?
