The core issue with this trilogy is that it was poorly managed (by the producers or other top executives). We have a three-part story being made by different people with almost no coordination between them. It could have been so much better if we had the same person/people writing the whole story.

Force Healing is a light side force ability. So Anakin could have learned it. But once he turned to the dark side that ability is lost. So he couldn't have saved Padme. They didn't tease the emperor at the end of TLJ because the made it all up as they went along. They had no plan. They didn't expect to bring him back but kinda had to after Rian killed off who was suppose to be the antagonist of the trilogy in the 2nd movie of the trilogy.

The original director for episode 9 even came out and said he had no plans to bring the emperor back. They genuinely just let each director do whatever they wanted to. At least the prequels had a consistent and coherent story across all 3 movies that made sense.

Spoilers for Rebels but Obi Wan says Jedis use the force for knowledge and defense, and when Maul comes for revenge, Obi Wan still kills him, but only does so by countering Maul's attack, which is self-defense. I think the Emperor's schtick is to bait Jedi into attacking him with hate so they are tempted, but he doesn't try to strike them so they are not acting in self defense. That's just the lore though, what he does here is stupid.

My favorite bullshit 'bit' of the movie
    Spoiler ahead:
    The end spacefight improv...
1 star destroyer has death star gun = another death star end game, sigh.
2 1000 star destroyers, just adding bigger numbers to make it hype...
3 the weak spot is A SINGLE ANTENNA.
4 Finn INSTANTLY knows this weak spot and goes for it.
5 general pryde INSTANTLY knows this and rerouts this to ONE stardestroyer.
6 finn INSTANTLY knows this, and knows the new weak spot is a NEW ANTENNA!
7 so the new plan is to launch a ground troop attack with horses on the exterior of a star destroyer to throw some grenades under the antenna instead of just shooting it with something. wut?

Blasters won't penetrate, but Ahsoka showed people on Dantooine that you could roll a grenade at a slow enough speed that it goes through. So blaster fire wouldn't take it out due to shielding I assume, but they could get a ground team inside the shielding with bombs.
@cloudsRniceC0M3 Also, Finn definitely has some force abilities, was how he could sense where the weakspot is, also is an Ex-Stormtroopepr so would know potential layouts of key systems, even if it is an old Imperial Star Destroyer, is probably very similar to First Order tech.

i feel like this trilogy is like James says about you shouldn't do in sketch comedy, someone sets a scene so you should go with it, not just say no and set your own scene, but they do this twice episode 8 and 9 feel like they are just saying "no, that is not what happened " to their respective last movie, there are lots of things don't make sense in 8, but they didn't need to try to unmake every single thing, like the rey family thing, they already did a switcharoo in 8, run with it , don't just unmake it, take makes both 8 and 9 worse off.

@@hughcafritz3997 it is a issue that 8 didn't do it's job right as the middle movie of a trilogy, but to say there was nothing is wrong, i don't agree with lawdowg view of Rian Johnson just subverting everything just cuz he wanted to be smug, there definitely was notes that could direct episode 9, things like the resistance being almost wiped out, a new order that is seemingly so terrifying that the people didn't go help a in-universe legend like Leia, kylo, who is inexperienced and not exactly the most balanced with his emotions, as the supreme commander, rey, who could be a new bastion of hope unbound by the past. There's stuff there that could render a hero's journey, to say there was nothing that they needed to bring back the original villain, in my opinion, is wrong.

After TROS, we can't even say Anakin brought this new temporary 'balance' to the Force, because Darth Sidious survived ROTJ. The new heroes are not facing a new foe. If Force Ghosts can hold physical objects, and physical objects can be teleported from one place to another, then Obi-Wan, Luke, Yoda, Anakin, Leia AND Ben Solo can pick up lightsabers and just appear wherever they want, fighting crime, Sith, monsters, you name it.

I think what the person who said resurrection completely undermines Anakin's arc also referred to the fact that he was the chosen one to destroy the Sith, something he does when he redeems himself. But because of this movie Palpatine didn't die and so Vader and Luke didn't necessarily bring balance to the force and weren't good enough. Vader's sacrifice was basically for nothing besides buying them a few years. Then Rey strolls in and with few issues, defeats Palpatine single handedly when he's at his most powerful (I get she had the dead Jedi "in her" but still). And that's still with her barely having any training. They tried to fix it but she's still OP and still had far far less training than even Luke had.

    • @befru
      @befru 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@richardwainwright507 There are 40 years worth of rough guidelines created by the movies and EU that define the technology and abilities that people can use. Following those rules are important to make sure that the story is logical (for that universe) and doesn't create endless plot holes. Otherwise the story could quickly turn into a confusing mess that doesn't have any real stakes for the characters and can invalidate the decisions of previous characters, which is what we see with this Disney trilogy.
Hyperspace is a good example. It has already been established that it is a straight line point-to-point method of travel, can't be activated when the ship is within a gravity well, and the ship will be destroyed if it flies through another gravity well or another object. Basically every pre-Disney movie, book, and video game has followed these rules and it has allowed creative story elements like blockading an area to prevent someone escaping and Interdictor Star Destroyers. Then JJ comes along and seems to think that Hyperspace is just some kind of magic warp where people can go in or out whenever or wherever that want, and that significantly degrades the quality of the story since there are no rules anymore so any character can do any convenient plot thing at any time.

My one wish for the sequel trilogy was that the whole Finn using the lightsaber and Rey not wanting anything to do with the force to be carried out, I think that if Finn continued to use the lightsaber but was never shown to be force sensitive while Rey ends up having to use the force would have been a very interesting dynamic. It could have been something where Unity and teamwork always beat out a single evil in the sense that Kylo is a single sith or the emperor is a single sith. Also, it could have opened things up for a cool ending scene where Rey manages to get a hold of less lightsaber while Finn has Lukes and then it's revealed that Finn is force sensitive and there's a cool fight scene with both Rey and Finn use the full extent of their power, once again tying into an overarching theme of unity ad being stronger when working as a single coherent unit.

I do think it made sense for Luke to contemplate killing his nephew, especially because I've watched the OT. When Luke fought Vader in ROTJ, his plan was always to redeem his father, until emotions and temptation clouded his judgement and he nearly faltered.
TLJ shows that he struggled with exactly that while training Ben. Luke understood better than anyone the destruction that would follow if he allowed Ben to fulfill Luke's vision. Luke experienced the loss of friends and family, witnessed entire civilizations conquered, knows the Big Bads aren't above destroying entire planets because he's seen it. Again in a moment of emotion and temptation, he sought to end it quickly to spare the galaxy another Vader -- and ultimately decided to spare Ben. I find this infinitely more interesting than making Luke infallible, above temptation and emotion, removed from his humanity, and turned into some two-dimensional character who thinks only in "lawful" and "good."
It shows that even Jedi Masters, for all their experience and wisdom, can still have these moments the audience can relate to, nearly giving in to passion or shame or anger before coming to their senses. For all the problems I had with TLJ, Luke's character was not one of them.

Lawrence hit on something I've been struggling to put together with these films when he mentioned transforming human moments into lore. Similarly, it seems like people are so eager for every detail in a visual storytelling medium to be literal and secretly relevant. Finn using a lightsaber in episode seven wasn't some inexplicable feat, but somehow "he touched a lightsaber" became "he must be a jedi." The broom kid at the end of episode eight seemed explicitly symbolic to me (i.e., touching on the themes of jedi not owning the force and inspiration mattering), but so many people jumped to the conclusion that he's going to be the next protagonist. Rey and Kilo transfering rain water, and Luke transfering the dice seemed deliberately ambiguous, but still pretty metaphorical, and now suddenly the writers decided that had to be categorized as some kind of defined force power. I'm realizing now what bothers me about these films is this sort of collective need to establish unambiguous lore at the cost of any kind of mystery or magical realism.

And Abrams ignored all that, because he's not a good enough writer to run with compelling character givens.

In The Last Jedi, the basic plot was survival, the resistance is trying to survive in the face of destruction, people are dying left right and center so others can keep going, Luke questions whether the Jedi deserve to survive, as does Klyo with the sith and Jedi, empire and rebellion (let the past die). Rose's final line is about survival (saving what you love) Luke gives his life so that the resistance might survive.
Seems pretty obvious considering how much they talk about it. Even Poes ark is about survival, at first sacrificing multiple ships to gain victory, then learning to preserve lives at the end to become a better leader rather than chase glorious victory.
Even DJ (Del Torro) preaches survival by the motto of Don't Join (remain neutral)

JJ did the best he could with the flaming trash heap RJ left behind, but we really probably just needed an Episode 10 to wrap things up without it feeling rushed. Would’ve been more satisfying if JJ had done all three, but it could’ve also been fixed had he done 7, 9, and 10.

Remember the Xbox One debacle? When it demanded online connection, a Kinect always attached, and a weird system for lending games to your friends?
Then Microsoft buckled under the pressure of their audience, "appeasing" them.
Sure, that's two different mediums, but they still share a need to rake in oodles of dollars, and a happy audience will do that for them.

The always online aspect and Kinect aspects were bad, but the game lending aspect debacle was massively overblown.

I feel like the intention (or better idea anyway) was for the balance of the force to end up contained within Rey. Palpatine's idea of his power and Sithness jumping into Rey ended up happening, but because all the Jedi are "within her" their combined wisdom accumulated over the centuries ends up balancing the inherent corruption of the power the Force gives. Hence from now on Rey would start a new lineage of grey Jedi type force users, call them "Skywalkers" if you like. Instead of two opposing Force factions causing galactic conflict, there would only be the conflict within a given Force user. This is also signified by her new lightsaber being an orange color, instead of red or blue/green.
Instead of a destructive galactic conflict where good prevails, there is now only the personal conflict where good prevails.

This was an interesting discussion. I mean no offense, but I honestly expected you to love this movie, Bruce. You seem to just love Star Wars, good or bad, so it's nice to see you express an opinion I didn't expect. Just interesting. In response to you asking if I thought the movie insulted my intelligence, I would say yes. This movie was a textbook case of trying to listen to and please the fans. I think a lot of people forget that the OT, and even the Prequels, were not made for the fans. They were Lucas' movies that Lucas made because they were movies he thought would be good (even not directing ESB and ROTJ, he was strongly involved in writing and post-production), for better and worse. The Sequel trilogy started with JJ just trying make a palatable movie that could go in a lot of directions, and did just fine. As was discussed, Johnson threw a wrench in that. For whatever anyone's opinion of that movie may be, it was poorly constructed from a narrative standpoint, and I would strongly agree with Lawrence with the belief that the movie is a social message first and a movie second. This left an impossible task for IX. I never once thought IX would be anything more than okay at best, because where do you go from there? And then I wonder how much creative control JJ actually had on this movie. It felt very much like design by committee. The Sequels as a whole have felt like a response to the Prequels. Regardless of opinion of the Prequels, the Disney-era has opted to just not acknowledge them at all outside of some voice line from old actors. No Midichlorians, no Podracing (which seemed like a perfect fit for Canto Blight), no nothing at all. Disney knows that the Prequels aren't liked but don't understand why, and because they don't understand the fans, they will never be able to give the fans what they want, because honestly the fans don't know what they want either.
In the end, the ultimate reason for the Sequel Trilogy's failure is that there was no creative vision. Only dollar signs in executives eyes.

Don't studios test screen their movies with audiences and sometimes change things in the movie based on their feedback? Even change the endings?! Just thinking about what Bruce said, that he's worried that creators will be forced to change their vision because some people in a test audience/internet don't like what they saw.

There are rumors that this is the cut that made it after 3 different cuts from test screenings! That's the crazy thing. Apparently the first two cuts were so bad that even casual fans rated it below a 40/100

10:06 yes! As much as I enjoyed having the old cast for nostalgia's sake, it always ran the risk of them dying or having their characters treated poorly. It would have been more interesting to focus on creating an original plot with new heroes facing a new threat in a galaxy shaped by the legacy of the OT heroes long after they've passed on.

I think the thing about Bruce talking about nobody dying was Disney wanting the characters to go back into the toy chest so they can continue selling them as toys. These movies felt like ways to market the characters and items as products which bums me out.

Lol JJ could have built off of 8. Instead he said fuck it. At the end of the day he had to make a good movie. He didn't and that's not on 8 that's on 9.

the rise of skywalker is a dumb action movie akin to transformers and fast and furious. i dont think it is a good movie but it is enjoyable. the characters all defied logic and just were not interesting. Babu fiek or whatever was the best character. the action was amazing though. thank you for coming to my review talk

Star Wars is a dumb action franchise akin to Transformers and Fast & Furious.
But because it was one of the first GOOD dumb action franchises, nobody wants to accept that.

The reason palpating didn't get absorbed into her body I'm pretty sure is because he already absorbed them when he died

the problem with this new trilogy is that you have to READ through ALL the cannon material to kind of understand and make sense of 'the force'. But even after reading all the canons, still doesnt justify Finn getting cucked lol

Yeah I'm with you, I felt nothing for the movie. That warm fuzzy Star Wars feeling I get from some of the other films just wasn't there , unfortunately.
