Met a guy while out riding the other day he was on ebike. Needles to say I was blowing out my ass going uphill hill while he floats on with what looks like no effort. Meet him half an hr later an he offers me a shot to try it out! I ain’t gonna lie after that I was very tempted to sacrifice the weight for climbing effort. Couldn’t believe the difference

Great video as always Neil! I love the way lean the bike over that drop off.
I can’t help but feel I’d end up like the horizontal guy from fails and bails! lol
I’m going to have to try it at some point though!

Be sure and have good insurance! One miss and a flip off a drop off wearing a little bicycle helmet can really leave a mark

I learnt to drop in by going to a skate park. You can start small and get bigger and now I love doing them. I still prefer aproaching from the left rather than the right as my right foot is forward. Straight on is ok which you usually have to do on a trail. I suggest practicing first on a lighter bike as it is like a bunny hop and you do need to lift the back. With a heavy bike like the ebike a bit more speed helps, only a couple of cranks. Being able to drop in then helps with drop offs where the landing slopes away and you need to push down on the bars and as Neil said keeping you weight back. When you get it right its so smooth and lots of grip at the front where you want it for next part of the trail. Useful and fun skill to learn. It still takes balls to do it and keep going bigger thou..lol

Awesome vid by the way! At Cannock chase there is the Devils stair case where u have to drop off but there are berms straight after the drop off n its quite tight catches me out all the time u just simply cant drop the front wheel then roll into the berm otherwise ur hitting the downward slope and eating mud n dirt! Haha not caught me out yet I say. Thanks for the vid mate great stuff 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻😎

    Hi Neil.
Been watching all the Emtb videos as I'm waiting for delivery of mine. One thing that struck me about your Emtb skills videos is that they really don't have anything to do with techniques specific to Ebikes. Like you I come from the... erm... good 'ol days of 48lb DH bikes so don't really envisage any major problems switching to riding an Ebike skills wise or the need to re-learn any fundamental skills when I get it.
What I am interested in though is. When you're descending what mode do you run an Ebike in?
Off? eco? trail? I'm thinking NOT boost as I imagine a boost of power at the wrong time might accelerate the rear more tha you'd want. Never ridden one though so don't know how soon the power kicks in or by how much.
Also do you switch modes at all during a descent? if for instance there's a flat portion or a small rise?
Enjoying your vids BTW. If you can find the time please teach Jonsey to jump. I tend to have to look away in all his riding sections. :P

Hi GA RY, I have the shimano steps motor which sounds like the one you are talking about. If its DH then start in eco mode and gear 5 or 6. If it starts to flatten you can either change gear or if you want a quick spirt go to trail mode. To save battery I often switch off. Its very quick to go up the modes but if you are travelling over 25kms then your not using it. My tip whilst learning is to use eco for dh and trail for xc. Get used to using your gears rather than gears and modes. A bit like 3x drive chains, start in middle front cog and learn to use the back ones. If extreme up ie front granny you use trail or boost and your large front cog is off or eco. It will take practice just dont over complicate it, focus should be on the trail. I switched up and down too much on my first ride. Now i know which mode and gear is best for trail features I have sessioned. Enjoy your new bike and welcome to the ebike community of which there is no return haha

Thanks for replying. That's a very helpful way of describing the use of modes. Locally my E-bike will be used primarily for XC. my local proper riding is pretty much all long steady climbs 95% non technical but descents are 95% steep, technical and involving. I generally don't need/want to change gear at all while descending. so will try both motor off and eco to see where/wnen and why I prefer each mode. It's great to get a little headstart on this so thanks again for your comments.
I think I'm already converted to the idea of E-mtb. I haven't really been all that into it while riding my mtbs (apart from DH) since I ordered the E-bike 3 weeks ago. Just wish Canyon would get their finger out and send me the thing. They've been hopeless.

    • @midlifebiker7424
      @midlifebiker7424 6 ปีที่แล้ว

GA RY No probs mate. I only use gears 3 to 9 so top and bottom 2 are redundant for the trails I ride. Gear 3 in boost takes on steep climbs and keeps traction and front down. Staying with no to low motor assist helps prolong the battery and your leg muscles. At the end of the ride if you are tired and just want to get back to the car then use the high assist modes and like a magic carpet it will take you there...
Where are you based, if you make any vids once you get your Canyon let me know, im very interested in the 29 front and 27.5+ rear. Im planning on trying it just getting over a rib injury at the mo.

I'm in Scotland. From my door the riding's actually quite flat and mainly XC but just over half an hours drive there's a bit of everything from beginners graded trail centres to rider built steep/tech descents accessed by long steep climbs. Per Sq km it's probably the most densely populated mtb trail area in the whole of the UK. Between home XC and the proper trails areas I can still see me using all the gears.

Neil, What size is your Haibike? I'm looking to buy the exact same one and like a smaller size to throw around. I'm 6'1" with a short reach. Any recommendations? Thanks!

The Kenevo is definitely built for big terrain and challenging riding. For all round riding you should check out the Turbo Levo.
