War is a crime. "Sunday Bloody Sunday" by U2 is about Bloody Sunday, where 26 people were shot during "The Troubles" in Ireland. "Zombie" by The Cranberries is also about war during The Troubles.

Rammstein "Mein Teil" was inspired by Armin Meiwes on less well known and obscure bands: "Reena" by Pariah Project, about the murder of Reena Virk by her classmates, "A Tale they won't believe" by Weddings Parties Anything is about a convict in New Zealand who was hanged for cannibalism, "Witchfinder General" by Paul Roland about Matthew Hopkins, the most prolific "witchfinder" in 1600s England
Simon And Garfunkel's "He Was My Brother" was about Paul's friend Andrew Goodman, one of the three civil rights workers murdered by the Klan in 1964. "He was my brother, and he died so his brothers could be free."
Thompson Twins - Sister Of Mercy was based off a newspaper headline that Tom Bailey read about a wife who killed her husband after 25 years of spousal abuse.
"Mein Teil" by Rammstein is about the German cannibal killer Armin Meiwes who advertised for a man to kill and eat and a man responded to the ad. Meiwes cut off his... erm... "man part" and together they ate it. Meiwes then killed the man and slowly consumed the rest of him until he was caught, 10 months later. Meiwes then tried to (unsuccessfully) sue the band over the song.
The Tragically Hip's song "Wheat Kings" is based on the true story of David Milgaard, a Canadian man who was wrongfully convicted of murder and spent 23 years in prison
"Youth of the Nation" by POD was written after the Columbine Shooting; "This Is Your Time" by Michael W. Smith and "Cassie" by Flyleaf were both written after Cassie Bernal who was a victim of the Columbine Shooting. idk if it counts but "Where Were You (When the World Stop Turning)" by Alan Jackson and "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue (The Angry American)" by Toby Keith were written about 9/11
While "Youth of the Nation" is a great listen; it was actually inspired by the tragedy at Santana High School in Santee, CA back in 2001. In addition; the songs "This is Your Time" by Michael W. Smith and "Cassie" by Flyleaf were based on a lie: Cassie Bernall was never asked about her religious beliefs and neither was Rachel Scott. Rather; the girl who was asked such a question was Valeen Schnurr. Valeen survived albeit badly injured. However the Evangelical and Christian communities ostracized Valeen and branded her as a liar as well as accusing her of "stealing Cassie's thunder."
Jennifer Lost The War by The Offspring mentions "little Miss 1565, her soul remains unclaimed". That refers to a circus tent fire long ago where a little girl was not identified, at the time the song was born. She has since been identified. I need to go look it up.... Its a deep song. I felt it needed to be mentioned.
"Fourteen Black Paintings" by Peter Gabriel from the "US" album, is inspired by the December 6th Massacre at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal. The producer of the album was Quebec's own Daniel Lanois. Peter wrote another song, "Biko" after a well-known South African social activist to abolish apartheid was murdered by the police. Finally, Peter wrote "Love Can Heal" in dedication to UK politician, Helen Joanne Cox, who was murdered in 2016 by a far-right extremist neo-Nazi.
Nirvana also had a song named “Frances Farmer will have her Revenge on Seattle” about an actress from Seattle who was treated like shit by Hollywood in the 1940s/50s .. she was accused and shamed for being a Drunk and many other horrible things .. then thrown in an Asylum and Raped by many doctors.. such a sad story
Limousine by Brand New, about the death of 7 year old Katie Flynn after the limo she was riding in was struck by a drunk driver. She was leaving her aunt's wedding along with her parents and some other family members. It's an absolutely devastating song. There's also Ohio by CSNY (Kent State murders), Zombie by the Cranberries (IRA bombing that killed two boys out shopping for Mother's Day), John Wayne Gacy Jr. by Sufjan Stevens, and What's the Frequency Kenneth? by REM (Dan Rather being assaulted by a mentally unstable man in the 80s)

If this story is interesting to anyone, I highly recommend the movie “Badlands”. It is a slightly fictionalized version of Starkweather and Fugate, and has sensitivity and depth.
Yeah, when I heard Hurricane I was already a Bob Dylan fan. That song was so amazing to me, not just because of the eloquent portrayal of the subject matter, but also because of the way he timed his lyrics, he managed to make rhymes out of words which don’t rhyme. That opened my mind a bit more than any song had up to that point.
August, 7 4:15 by Bon Jovi was written about his former personal manager's daughter who was kidnapped and eventually found dead on the time and date in the title. Her murder is still sadly unsolved. :(
Ted Admit it by Janes Addiction. It had a recording of Ted Bundy speaking if I remember correctly. There is the phrase Nothing Shocking in the song but I am not sure if that is where the album Nothing Shocking got its name.
Don't know if anyone's mentioned Pearl Jam's Jeremy. Thought it be number one. Springsteen also famously did American Skin. Sublime's April 29,1992 about LA riots. 100 Suns (Massive Attack and Snoop Dog) Calling Mumia. Cortez the Killer by Neil Young.
Also “Abraham, Martin and John” written by Dick Holler, originally performed by Dion but covered by multiple artists was about Lincoln, MLK, JFK and RFK assassinations.
"Suffer the Little Children" by Pat Benatar is a haunting and emotional song that was written for a victim, Melissa - thought to be Melissa Ackerman. There are live recordings of her mixing this song with "Hell is for Children." Both songs extremely impactful.
Others: Interpol: Evil. The song mentions "Rosemary" and that was a real person. She and her husband had a lot of daughters. He sexually assaulted all of them and she helped him do that. They eventually got convicted but they got away with this for many many years... way too long. Some of the daughters didn't live to see them get convicted. Nickelback: Side of a Bullet. This is about the murder of Dimebag Darrell Marilyn Manson: The Nobodies. This is about Columbine The Trews: Gun Control. The Kingston Trio: Tom Dooley. This tells the true story of the murder of a girl named Laura Foster. Although many people in modern times believe that her boyfriend Tom Dooley did not commit this crime, he is the one who was blamed for it and hanged for it. Rival Sons: Belle Starr. It's about the murder of a popular female outlaw from the 1800's
Darkness by Eminem is an entire song where you see the point of view of Eminem before a concert.. stressing out ..drowning on drugs and alcohol and waiting for a concert to start but in the last verse Eminem wasn’t talking about himself before a show.. it’s about Stephen Paddock and the Las Vegas/Mandalay Bay Mass Shooting..
No discussion of True Crime Music is complete without including SKYND. A currently active band whose entire discography is made up of True Crime stories: Jim Jones, Richard Ramirez, Gary Heidnik (featuring Korn's Jonothan Davis), Chris Watts, Michelle Carter, and more. To my knowledge, they are the only band specializing in True Crime Music. #skynd (edit: simply added the hashtag)
Not the only band. There's a metal band named Macabre who sing almost exclusively about mass/serial murderers, which they spice up with a lot of gallows humor. They've even released an entire concept album about the life and crimes of Jeffrey Dahmer.
What about the song 1913 Massacre by Woody Guthrie? The song was released in 1945 and was about The song is about the death of striking copper miners and their families in Calumet, Michigan, on Christmas Eve, 1913, in what is commonly known as the Italian Hall disaster.
"Annalisa" by Public Image Limited is about Anneliesa Michel, a Bavarian woman who had epilepsy and died of dehydration during the multiple exorcisms that were performed to 'cure' her by expelling the demon that possessed her.
Candian here Wheat Kings by iconic Canadian band Tragically Hip is one song that could be in a second list. Wheat Kings is about the wrongful conviction of David Milgaard.
Macabre: Their entire discography is about serial killers. They have an entire album about Jeffery Dahmer, and songs about Jack the Ripper, John Wayne Gacy to name a few.
At the Oxford Apartments Jeffrey lived at 213 But his neighbors didn't know That Jeffrey was a fiend He said the fridge was broken The smell was rotten meat But nobody knew It was the men that Jeff would eat
@@carolyncolebeck6945 is it about crime or basicly both sides fighting? Cuz both IRA and the Brithish forces did they shit... Same as Angel of Death by Slayer is about sadistic cruealty ot war, not necesesry of one person....
There's a couple of prequels to that song by the Killers. Midnight Show is a prequel to that song and a B-side called "Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf" is a prequel to that
@@otaku_bear3667 It was a politician who shot himself during a press conference. It's all on film. His name was Bud Dwyer. You can watch the video if you search his name.
Here's a song that most people don't know is based on a real crime: Dancing in the Moonlight. And the victim of the crime, none other than the writer and singer of the song, Sherman Kelly.
Was just about to make a comment about this band lmao, pretty much all of their songs are about true crime...so it'd be probably a little hard to put them on a list, which one do you use? unless they just go with the most popular and then make mention that all the other songs the bands done are about true crime...
Under modern law, accomplices are just as guilty as the perpetrator, so "Let Him Dangle" is simply a protest against still-existing law in many countries.
You forgot to add that the Starkweather/Fugate killing spree was the inspiration for 3 movies. The Sadist, Badlands and Natural Born Killers, in that chronological order.
Lindemann (Lead singer from Rammstein) does a song that has this fantastic tango like beat to it, unlike a lot of his work. Then you translate the lyrics and realize the lyrics are just as dark and twisted as a lot of the other works 😂. Still catchy as hell and if you don’t know German, you wouldn’t even know you were listening to a true crime confession
Little Houdini by Sage Francis is about the jailbreak and crimes of Christopher Daniel Gay. It's actually kinda sad. Atmosphere's "That Night" is about a girl who was abducted and killed at one of their concerts Cranberries "Zombie" is about a bombing that left two boys dead Hey Man Nice Shot by Filter is about R. Budd Dwyer's on-air sewerslide Aesop Rock & TOBACCO's "Acid King" is about Ricky Kasso, who killed his friends while on LSD
Not so much about a crime but an eerie foreshadowing. There was a singer/songwriter from a grunge band in 90’s era Seattle who was murdered while she was walking home from hanging out with friends. Shortly before she died, she wrote a song about a woman who was murdered by a man out on the prowl for a victim. One of her bandmates mused on it after she died, saying how eerie it was that she wrote a song that mirrored how she ended up dying.
Pretty much anything by Macabre is a true crime song Slayer also did “Dead Skin Mask” about Ed Gein and “213” about Jeffrey Dahmer. Iced Earth did “Jack” about Jack the Ripper
14 is a rather random number considering there are many more songs dealing with real crimes. As a sidenote, if you focus only on metal you could make a list at least 10 times longer than this one.
Green River by CCR, obviously about the Green River killer. Also Street Justice by Twisted Sister, about a Cho mo that was killed by vigilante parents when the law didn't stop him. It's believed to be about a serial killer called Captain Howdy.
I knew it wouldn't be on this list but, Death Metal legends Deicide did a song about Rev. Jim Jones and the Jones Town mass suicide of over 900 people including children called Carnage in the Temple of the Damned. Slayer did a song called 213 about Jeffery Dahmer, and at the beginning of the Cannibal Corpse song Addicted to Vaginal Skin the voice of Arthur Shawcross can be heard.
I don't like Mondays by Boomtown Rats is about 16-year-old Brenda Spencer's school shooting of 1979 where the principal and a custodian were killed & eight children and police officer Robert Robb were injured.
MACABRE: Dahmer: Apartment 213 At the Oxford Apartments Jeffrey lived at 213 But his neighbors didn't know That Jeffrey was a fiend He said the fridge was broken The smell was rotten meat But nobody knew It was the men that Jeff would eat
Mine Tiel btw Rammstein was about a man that put an advert in a German news paper to fulfill a wish to be earn after his death and he got someone to do it. Sorry from my bad German.

Here's a song that most people don't know is based on a real crime: Dancing in the Moonlight. And the victim of the crime, none other than the writer and singer of the song, Sherman Kelly.
No "Zombie"?
This list had better had some SKYND on there
Could have made the whole list from SKYND.
Was just about to make a comment about this band lmao, pretty much all of their songs are about true crime...so it'd be probably a little hard to put them on a list, which one do you use? unless they just go with the most popular and then make mention that all the other songs the bands done are about true crime...
Part 2 of this please!
Under modern law, accomplices are just as guilty as the perpetrator, so "Let Him Dangle" is simply a protest against still-existing law in many countries.
There's also a vocaloid song based off of the crime Albert fish did If I remembered
May I add Sniper by Harry Chapin? Sounds like inspired by Charles Whitman Texas clock tower killings of 1966.
What about Dead Skin Mask by Slayer or Nothing to Gein by Mudvayne? They were all inspired by Ed Gein and his murders
"American Triangle" by Elton John was about the murder of Matthew Shepard.
As was the song "Scarecrow" by Melissa Etheridge.
And the song "Poster child" by A Balladeer too
Also, TICKING was inspored by a campus mass shooting in the 60s.
You forgot to add that the Starkweather/Fugate killing spree was the inspiration for 3 movies. The Sadist, Badlands and Natural Born Killers, in that chronological order.
Also The Frighteners
@@glynwigley1581 I didn't know about that one. Is it new?
@@BlackHatCinephile It was on their 1981 album Juju
@@glynwigley1581 Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate made an album? From prison??
Lindemann (Lead singer from Rammstein) does a song that has this fantastic tango like beat to it, unlike a lot of his work. Then you translate the lyrics and realize the lyrics are just as dark and twisted as a lot of the other works 😂. Still catchy as hell and if you don’t know German, you wouldn’t even know you were listening to a true crime confession
Little Houdini by Sage Francis is about the jailbreak and crimes of Christopher Daniel Gay. It's actually kinda sad.
Atmosphere's "That Night" is about a girl who was abducted and killed at one of their concerts
Cranberries "Zombie" is about a bombing that left two boys dead
Hey Man Nice Shot by Filter is about R. Budd Dwyer's on-air sewerslide
Aesop Rock & TOBACCO's "Acid King" is about Ricky Kasso, who killed his friends while on LSD
Michael Jackson - Al Capone
Disturbed - 3
Any song by the band Skynd
If you do a follow up, would be good to see Ben Folds Five song Cigarette.
Skynd's entire catalog is based solely on true crime
"Car Seat" and "Skinned" both by Blind Melon
Those are two beautiful songs based on crimes.
Delia's Gone by Johnny Cash.
Surprised "Pumped Up Kicks" wasn't on here
I'm sad to see that Bobby Mackey's "Johanna" wasn't on the list.
You forgot Seconds by Human League which is also about the Kennedy assassination
Pretty much anything by Macabre is a true crime song
Slayer also did “Dead Skin Mask” about Ed Gein and “213” about Jeffrey Dahmer.
Iced Earth did “Jack” about Jack the Ripper
14 is a rather random number considering there are many more songs dealing with real crimes.
As a sidenote, if you focus only on metal you could make a list at least 10 times longer than this one.
We Are the Others by Delain is about Sophie Lancaster. A girl who was murdered in the UK, just for being different.
Polly by Nirvana 🔥
10:13
Yeah, but it was already in the video
Also Nick cave and his band wrote a song called wild rose which was based off of Elizabeth short’s murder
I don't like Mondays by Boomtown Rats is about 16-year-old Brenda Spencer's school shooting of 1979 where the principal and a custodian were killed & eight children and police officer Robert Robb were injured.
We know
Yes, it's known
Yes, that’s what the video explained
Who asked you
@@mariasky3325 no one asked you to be rude
Ah! So that’s where Texas Is The Reason got their name! Surprised I didn’t know that 😅 learn something new every day ❤
Same thoughts
MACABRE: Dahmer: Apartment 213
At the Oxford Apartments
Jeffrey lived at 213
But his neighbors didn't know
That Jeffrey was a fiend
He said the fridge was broken
The smell was rotten meat
But nobody knew
It was the men that Jeff would eat
"Seconds" by Human League should be noted as an honorable mention, as it's about Lee Harvey Oswald at the book depository.
Yes! One of the best songs ever
Mine Tiel btw Rammstein was about a man that put an advert in a German news paper to fulfill a wish to be earn after his death and he got someone to do it. Sorry from my bad German.
Frizl by Benighted is about Josef Fritzl
Dead Skin Mask by Slayer is about Ed Gein
@Skynd, all their songs are true stories
Nice shot! Filter classic
