- 'tis true but it's not a traditional steel narrowboat this time (can't afford one). Instead I've bought something very cheap and cheerful, just to bob about in at weekends and on short trips. This is the first of two videos of me bringing the video back to a mooring near my home.

Good to see you back on the waterways my friend, missed your cruising content. The medicine I need in this mad world we seem to be living in.
A boat, viewed from underneath can be looked at like an airplane viewed from the top. When you turn the rudder in a plane, it does not make the airplane change _course_ , it just changes the direction the plane is FACING (ie its heading)*. It would need a fixed vertical wing of some sort in the middle to cause the fuselage to actually move in that direction.
If you view an airplane from the SIDE, when you angle the elevator up/down it also angles the fuselage, but then the whole fuselage goes up or down because the elevator changes the angle of attack of the wing and it starts pulling you in that direction.
If you had a vertical device on the bottom of the hull, (sort of like a sailboat) then the rudder would change the angle of the boat (as it does) but the straight piece would then make the boat change actual course.
I saw this on scrapheap challenge one time where they made a submarine and it had an elevator, but no "wings" or "bow planes"; thus raising the elevator made the nose aim up and the tail go down, but there was almost no change in depth it just scooted along the bottom while aimed up. Blimps do this too, the "balloon" body acts as a lifting surface but not an efficient one, so you have to use huge elevator to get it to do anything.
Of course something sticking down would be an issue for grounding, especially with the fiberglass hull. Maybe short "skegs" on both sides?

Is the crabbing motion due to a short keel in relation to the length? And maybe a keel that isn't pronounced enough?
Even with the rudder on the outboard it's an entirely different kettle of fish when your steering is actually directing thrust in different directions...It's akin to driving a forklift where the rear wheels turn and the fronts are fixed. Also the short waterline length and very light weight make it a good deal more "twitchy". Basically it will take time to relearn helmsmanship as it is a different experience than a traditional narrowboat.

Looks like your motor is NOT centered on your stern... Like pushing a shopping cart with one hand, it wants to push sideways. They have mounts to center in on stern ...

It has all the handling of a supermarket trolley! The slightest move is like the butterfly effect on steroids.
I think he could add some vertical fins in the back. These V-shaped front crafts with rather flat bottomed backs are not easy to hold on a straight course unless you run then in planing speed.

I started watching your videos in 2019 at a time when I was working in London. To say I hated my job was an understatement, but after finding your channel, and watching your videos, it made staying in hotels 5 nights a week less frustrating. Watching this video has just brought back all those good feelings of seeing the countryside and nature when all I could see was towers. I am very much looking forward to seeing more boating trip videos. I'm a manly man, but right now I feel like a kid again at Christmas ha ha.

David, that outboard motor is a 1990’s era Honda, probably a 9.8 hp or 15 hp. Maybe a late 1980’s. My past experience in work includes part ownership of a marina in Ontario Canada with my parts to a full career of marine parts distribution, marina parts department manager and service writer. As for the throttle issue, you may just have to replace both the throttle and shift cables and they get stiff with age. These are standard Morse or Teleflex or U-Flex control cables formerly called 33C style having 10-32 threaded ends. I don't fully understand all of rjt's comment but it sounds as if he knows exactly what he is talking about and is giving good advice. I am sure that your engine should be able to run at whatever rpm you set, and not just tick over or death wish, so if going over the remote throttle and steering controls does not entirely solve the problem then perhaps the engine would benefit from the attention of a knowledgeable mechanic.

This outboard of unknown provenance seems to be working fine. If you ever need to replace it newer out boards have advanced by leaps and bounds in recent years. Another thought is a different prop may serve your purposes better for this kind of boating (low speed).
I was wondering about this right before David mentioned going electric. A newer engine ( do they make hybrids?) and a better prop might make steering and slow navigation easier.

Congratulations David! It is wonderful to have a boat on the canal again. this is a beautiful canal. Outboards do differ from rudder steering. but, fiberglass is tough, so don't worry. The episode was absolute fun! I especially love the window sticker, ' I don't need therapy, I just need my boat." Butane is a wonderful stove for a boat. I look so forward to the next installment.
Check bushings in the steering cable links. Then consider a blade extension on the fin of the outboard to help with tracking.
That will work and help you with the maneuverability - if you're adventurous, try enclosing the prop in a homemade housing of PVC tube, it'll give you even more direction at low speed, almost like a water jet. Congratulations on becoming a water rat again!

very true, i had a 43ft house boat on a regular boat hull,, and it was a semi displacement, and i could cruise at 29kns.. pretty quick for a houseboat lol. but yeah, i sold it and moved a 1000 miles inland, but i dream of going back and buying a trawler type

Driving an outboard is an art just like a narrow boat. You'll get the hang of it. I used to have a small runabout here in the US. I used it for water-skiing and day cruising in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta for many years. Good luck with the new cruiser. 😺

Think he enjoyed messing about with that one...a lot of the lads in the marina gave him advice....I told him to get a coursekeeper on the engine, same as mine, as he'd been banging the boat from side to side on the canal! My congratulations! In regards to the controlls, I would suggest you to think about changing the pitch of the engine propeller to the less angled. This will provide you less speed, but better handling and better capacity of the propeller.

About the stove they aren’t that dangerous as long as you provide proper ventilation you have a hatch in the roof that should do. And if you switch them of they disconnect the gas can at least mine does. I use it in my 1975 Eriba Puck. That has a pop-up roof with ventilation. It even has its own two burner stove built in. Greetings 🫡 Peter.
They are not safe in a boat, flammable gas in an environment where it has no place to escape to. Plus I have seen plenty of videos of those stoves where the gas escapes (lit) out of the canister in-situ, causing flames to shoot out of the sides.

What a pleasure it is to see you out on the water again in your own boat David. I’d forgotten how much I used to enjoy your cruising vlogs.
As one other commenter pointed out, a different propeller (along with a skeg running the length of the keel) would make a difference to how the boat handles. A propeller with a finer pitch (less blade-angle) would allow the outboard to run at higher RPM without increasing boat speed. Like selecting a lower gear in your car. This is better for the engine as running at low RPM for long periods can cause the spark-plugs to foul. You would also enjoy increased torque, which would be better for manouvering.
The single most common point of failure in outboards is overheating, caused by the water-pump impeller failing. For optimum reliability, this should be replaced annually, at the start of the boating season, regardless of its condition. By the same token, the oil in the gearbox should be replaced anually, at the finish of the season. This is a relatively simple task that any reasonably competent person can do with simple tools. There are lots of YT vids that you can refer to if you want to do it yourself. Bear in mind that the outboard's cooling system in an "open-circuit" that pumps raw water (and mud/fine deribs) from the canal, through the engine. You need to flush it out regularly. The engine-oil will load up with moisture/contaminents faster if the engine is not run hard, often, (and that would be problematic on the canal network) so changing it more frequently than the manufacturer recommends, is a good idea. Oil is cheap, compared to the cost of a new engine.

Hopefully those more experienced may be able to advise about the crabbing and throttle response. Maybe a modification to the throttle linkage may make it more progressive. Already looking forward to your next video on Twiggy (though I do think "yellow peril" would be a better name.)

Just watched your Twiggy video. Here's a couple of suggestions: check the steering for excessive play. Usually something is loose at or near the motor. The engine could be a Honda. You could get a propeller with less pitch, which might give you better low speed control by slightly raising the RPMs. We've followed you for years, and are happy to see you back on the water!
One thing I forgot to mention: check to make sure that the propeller extends down past the bottom of the boat. You might need a long-shaft outboard. If the propeller does not extend past the bottom, the boat won't steer very well at all.
Another thing to consider, is if it has a rudder blade attached to the outboard, which many canal boats do have, then the rudder could either be too big or too small. Experimentation with different sized rudder blades may well be needed. The advice about the prop pitch being too aggressive is also good.👍 I have driven many GRP boats with outboards and they should track straight and steer reliably, except maybe in a cross-wind.
Twiggy is adorable! Her steering reminds me of the steering of a Hyundai I once rented to drive over the mountains to San Francisco. Way too sensitive. That was a nerve-wracking drive.
Honestly, it's just nice seeing you out on the canals, recording life, locks, and leisure. Well done on the boat purchase!

You spent many years handling a very heavy narrowboat and did very well there, this new boat is a very different beast altogether. You will get the hang of it in no time. Congratulations on the new boat! Having owned fiberglass and aluminum outboard boats here in the USA I would have you check the steering linkage. It might be loose and that would allow the motor to move on its own throwing you off course.
Also have the steering cable checked, it seems to have a great deal of lost motion. Perhaps other cruisers could offer further insight to this issue. Cheers!
That sounds likely. Add in the "short coupled" nature of a tiny boat, and the vastly reduced weight would definitely mean a new feeling in the steering.

Lovely to see you back on the water David. It's probably been mentioned amongst the 100s of comments but you'd definitely benefit from having a ruddersafe fitted. Makes manoeuvring really easy rather than zig-zaging across the canal.

I've had a 53 ft narrowboat and a 30 ft. The longer one was much easier, the shorter one twitchy.
Steering a rudder with a tiller reacts completely different than steering an outboard with a wheel. Especially a little cruiser the size and weight of a dinghy without a keel. That little boat is moving in the directory the force of the outboard is pointing and without a keel that can be sideways.
btw, no drive results in no steering.
Don't mention 'breeze', we don't want any of those in a fiberglass boat. Well, not strong ones anyway. I wonder if that was the 3rd thing David learnt about fiberglass boats but couldn't remember 🤔😁
I’ve just changed from a larger NB to a 23’ Wilderness Beavour which is fibreglass. . 😮I found the NB so much easier to control and I’m still adjusting. My dog Molly also loved the NB but just wants to jump off my new boat. All v. challenging!!
