Hello Friends! Things are happening. We bought a new laser for paint stripping and “Darge” the dock/barge has been delivered to our shop for modifications! We will be bringing you all this new content here and some extra behind the scenes videos on our patreon ProjectLighthouse. If you enjoy our content and like our mission, then please support us in any way you would like. (Like, subscribe, donate, follow) Thank you for watching! 😊
I understand you guys know paint but why didn't you use a zinc rich primer on the metal surfaces for additional protection? I do tons of metal work around the bay and we always use that.
@@metalmasterscYou are right. This is interior. On the exterior we will use a zinc filled epoxy primer. I don’t like to use regular zinc because it requires a near white metal surface prep, which is easy to get in the shop but not easy on site. Epoxies are more tolerant. I have seen epoxy mid coats delaminate from non epoxy based zinc primer. So that always concerns me. Thanks!
Wood guy here. While fir would be an understandable guess, I feel like the bathroom floor is likely heart pine from old growth southern yellow pine. It’s what would have been used on the eastern seaboard at the time this lighthouse was built. The natural resins make it exceptionally durable, as is evident. Nice work!
You are probably right. I should clarity that I am not a wood expert by any means. I just appreciate antique wood and I did reconstruct a barn timber frame from 1803 that is my home. Thanks for the comment!
@@allanjoyce2753While cypress does hold up great to wet conditions, it’s too soft to hold up well as a durable floor. Cypress has less growth-ring contrast than the floor in this video, and it doesn’t smell like pine when sanded.
Trust me that is Heart Pine. It is old growth and harder than any standard pine you find today. You were smelling the resin in the wood. Dont let it ever catch fire, it will burn like crazy.
Did anyone else catch them say all three of them at 29:27 Because apparently they bought a third lighthouse. So great job on restoring three at one time I’m impressed. I’d love to see the progress on all three soon.
The third lighthouse is Craighill Channel Lower Range Front Light near Baltimore. Restoring 3 lighthouses at once is a ton of work but we are hoping that the channel will keep growing as we share videos about the process.
On the wood flooring, I would apply 2 coats then let them dry. Once dry, do final finish sand, tack rag the dust and apply a final 3rd coat. You will not be disappointed. Love your progress and the videos. Very exciting restoration project! Yes the wood is beautiful. Does the rest of the lighthouse have wooden floors as well???
I've subscribed because as a restoration volunteer for all types and classes of vintage and classical vehicles, trams, locomotives I can appreciate the time, effort and energy needed on projects such as yours and not only that the challenges that can arise. Admire your work and passion with restoring lighthouses. Cheers from the land down under mate.
"How does that even happen??" Amazing work guys! My mother used to take off 2 weeks every year with her mother and visit every lighthouse they could find. So proud of you all for doing what you do!
I suggest turning the toilet CCW 90 degrees and backing it up to the outer wall, you'll have less chance of hitting your head when standing up. As a bonus the storage space under the stairs would still be mostly usable, go simple and hang a curtain up to hide the stuff back there or go all out and build some doors. An advantage of putting in doors would give you something to put a TP roll holder on.
A suggestion for the bathroom sink. Put a folding sink above the toilet. The drain goes out the back instead of out of the bottom. We had them in boats and compact campers. We actually had one of our people weld a toilet paper dispenser on one side(L/R) so it was available when the sink was up and out of the way when the sink was down.
As a mechanical engineer working in the CNC and machining sector, I must say I am very impressed by your knowledge, both in metals and construction, as well as how handy you are with such a variety of tools. I guess it is a result of being in the sector for 30 years, which is about my age. I see some people criticizing, but I would say you are doing great work-so much better than what 99% of people here, including myself, could have done. Watching it both entertains and educates me. Greetings from Turkey.
You are too kind! I am a good sandblaster and painter, but I am not a professional in general construction. This project will test my abilities and it will be shown on TH-cam for all to see and criticize haha. Thomas is programming a CNC machine to operate our laser so we don’t have to stand there while it slowly cleans the walls. I wish we had your experience with that! Thank you for watching from Turkey!
This is a gift that keeps on giving I think and you guys are slowly unfolding all the hidden mysteries and gems. That floor came up smicko, well done guys
Great video and excellent job! I'm too love old wood grain. It's nice decision to leave it visible! Behind the toilet wall will be great place to store toilet paper etc.. 😉 Only access doors is needed..
To answer the fishermen question, it’s because a lot of fish like structures-think a fallen tree in a lake, or a coral reef. These fellers are just scanning with their side-sonar and other “fish-finder” equipment. Note that you may find one of them willing to share their scans near/around the lighthouse, which could be useful for understanding what’s happening at the floor of the bay.
I love the longer videos with in depth restoration details. Keep up the good work guys! My only critique is on how long it takes to get new videos…. We want more! Give the people what they want!
Back in the 80s my first apartment was in an attic. The toilet was against the short wall and you faced the angled ceiling/roof so to use it standing, you had to do a back bend. My experience from that year is that sitting works just as well.😉
they could also just double-use the kitchen sink. Since an extra basin costs usefull space, especially in small spaces like this, that are mostly about practical usage. Additional effect: a little less pipework.
@c0rvu5albu55 yeah yoi really don't need a separate sink for washing after the bathroom. Using the kitchen sink is the default for most places with outhouses anyways.
Put the toilet where you feel most comfortable under the stairs, then build the closer/bathroom wall out a few more feet to allow for a side door and more room for the sink! The plan totally works, you just need to give it a few more square feet to make it livable... . I love to analyze floor plans as a way to unwind. Great job so far! You're living something I dream of doing! Thanks for sharing!
Nice job restoring that small space for a bathroom. That lighthouse is a fine project preserving some maritime history on the bay. You guys are learning as you go but seem to do a thorough job. Good luck on the remainder of your endeavor.

@14:33 I really appreciate that sound effect over the sound of the hammer hitting the metal. I love watching restoration videos but sometimes the sounds of the tools is deafening. Lighthouses 4 ever
From a guy that has done a good number of wood floors: just dump a bit straight from the bucket onto the floor. Spread around with roller. You'll get an even coat, no worries. This way, you don't have a pan with a bunch of excess to worry about. Only using as much as you need. Also, for poly, sand after second coating with 200 grit. use moderate pressure. wipe down with mineral spirits. wipe dry. third coating can be your final, or just keep adding layers, but each layer after will be much smoother.
We are putting more time into the channel and we have so much to bring you as interesting things keep happening to us when we go out there. I think we are in a groove now of shooting and editing so there will be more frequent posting. Your editing is fantastic! I can't wait to see what y'all do with this! I love watching restoration videos and seeing one for a lighthouse is a real treat. ❤
You're confused by this yellow "color" of the wood. It's actually the weather coating they applied - some of them are yellow. Then they painted over it with probably marine colors. So that's why they got so bright colors, probably it was the cheapest marine color this year ;)
Great update, major progress!! One of my fondest memories is sitting on the deck of a beach house in Galveston TX, watching a distant storm out on the Gulf of Mexico. I'll bet the same experience on your lighthouse would be spectacular!!

That floor is probably Red Fir, Was used in lots of older housing and construction back in the day. Its actually quite hard for a soft wood. Great job guys, cant wait for more vids.
Regarding the Fishermen question: Probably there migth be some cave that a certain fish use(d) to hide. So when someone marked this spot on their fishfinder, it can be seen by other fishermen aswell, which would result in fishermen coming to your lighthouse. If they come to this cave and the fishfinder doesnt pick up anything, or just small fishes, they just go to the next spot. A fishfinder is basically a sonar instrument, that blasts sound into the water. If its being reflected, then you'll know that something is there. Because its being reflected by anything (even living objects), you can determine the size, species and form of the fish. People are often on the lookout for specific species that they want to eat or sell to a restaurant.
Fish love structure and a Light House is a fish magnet. Some fisherman run and gun hitting a bunch of different spots and not staying long at any one spot. Personally, I like fishing one or two spots and relaxing while doing it.
In a future Q&A could you talk about all the rules and limitations you have to work with to help preserve the building? Maybe even interview the people you work with on camera.
8:40 --- Try Norton Blaze Rapid Strip ---- its crazy fast at removing rust , remember to use proper technique and rpm with it you can also look for diamond brush for angle grinder used for granite (also pferd have one for steel --- its almost same as ones for granite ....but for 15x more 😅) they crazy fast

I didn't realize it took 8 months to make the first 15 episodes. I think you guys can easily start issuing a new episode once a week showing the various activities related to rebuilding the lighthouses. And from what I see of other weekly TH-cam channels, I have no doubt you also can have a successful channel. I appreciate your mission and I'm certain your audience and sponsors will continue to grow.
We are ramping up production. It’s hard because we have a small team and a small budget but the desire for our content is bigger than that. I think this year will be very good for the channel. We just got a great sponsor and that will fund more videos. Please stay tuned! Thanks
I think having a little of the old paint show though just shows the age of everything. It still looks great, but a little history is still a part of it
That’s great! It’s not the first time we have heard this. We are very proud to make content that is interesting to all ages. Kids love nature and they like seeing people do things. It’s funny that most people think digital animated shows are for kids. Why not show real life? We also have a patreon called ProjectLighthouse that is helping to fund our work. Thanks for watching. We will have an another new video out just after Christmas 😀
Great video… loved the format of showing work being done and then answering frequent questions….. i think its great how far you have come with these videos….. at least your making progress now…..
I live in a house built in 1937. We have a bathroom between our master bedroom and the living room that has only just enough space for a toilet, a tiny sink wedged into a corner. I'm not kidding.. a broad shouldered man would find his biceps brushing both sides of the bathroom walls. BUT.. it works. And the past builders put in a couple of mirrors that help the coffin sized bathroom "feel" larger than it is. Just a couple of notes I think you should consider. 1) Do your best to provide as much space as possible for movement of the body and elbows and such as the user er... umm.. wipes. 2) In a tiny space like that. You will NEED a way to vent smells outside. I suggest a modest fan with a pull chain, Connected to 3" metal ducting to a hole in the wall. You can cover the vent outlet with some really nice looking covers. 3) That curved steel wall.. is gonna act like a sound amplifier of whatever horrible things is going on inside the bathroom. There are times when you DON'T want to advertise that you are enduring the unfortunate consequences of a poor Taco choice. I suggest you apply a thin layer of sound deadening adhesive to those metal walls to help provide a bit of privacy. I like to use this stuff called Dyno-mat. It's about 1/8" thick, with adhesive back. And there are lots of competitors selling essentially the same thing on Amazon. I use it to deaden sound on vintage vehicles that I restore. Also... you could grab some of those pool noodles at WalMart. Slice them down their length on one side with a razor blade. Then push them onto the edges of those steel support beams to protect people's heads if they stand up to fast. Those pool noodles come in all sorts of colors. Love the vids. I'm a passionate and jealous fan. Keep them coming.
i guess its different in the States but in NZ the building code says you must have two doors between a kitchen and a toilet but keep up the good work, who doesn't love a lighthouse
Whenever someone says "That stuff is garbage! Raaaar!" you can answer things like "Use something different on your lighthouse wooden bathroom floor then. Oh, you don't have one? Tough luck." :-D
For your tools etc you could use airplane mobile racks. Like the food trolleys etc. They're very narrow, stackable, lockable, robust and most importantly wheeled. Easy to roll outside, even orderable so you can very quickly get started.
Not sure how I got here... Also not sure how to leave now.... So glad I stumbled onto this channel. Thanks for the work you all are doing and taking us all along for the ride. Rich seems like a really nice person with a great passion for preservation and the editor / media guy ( matt I believe, sorry if i got that wrong) Is definitely a huge reason I binged the entire channels video library. I sincerely hope the projects get the attention and support from the public and local gov they deserve. The Lighthouse Centers is firing a shot across Motel6's bow because they too will now keep a light on for you :)
you should consider getting one of those floor sanding machines, i know there are lots of round edges and corners, but it makes quick work of any space over a foot wide .
Reconsider putting up a solid wall behind the toilet bowl. The void behind (under the lower stairs) could be used for storage shelves and cupboards/drawers.
Another cracking videos chaps. Unless you really desperately need the toilet up an running, it would make great storage space for you. Keep up the great work an cant wait for the next installment. Pls dont make it to long
Gentlemen, you are doing an awesome job. It is wonderful to see the progress of your hard work. I hope that you can raise enough revenue to keep this progressing at a rapid pace. Once again, keep up the excellent work and well done on this episode. Look forward to more content.
Please stop encouraging Thomas! It will only cause him to make more hilarious and entertaining videos. We are ramping up production. It’s hard because we have a small team and a small budget but the desire for our content is bigger than that. I think this year will be very good for the channel. We just got a great sponsor and that will fund more videos. Please stay tuned! Thanks
Really enjoying watching you guys restore that Bad Boy
😂 we have a new video coming around Christmas showing how we put a new door on that Bad Larry
@@thelighthousecenters how are you heating the lighthouse?
I think having a little of the old paint show though just shows the age of everything. It still looks great, but a little history is still a part of it
Idk why my 4 month old loves these videos but I know why I do 😂❤️ Can't wait for more!
The first floor is going to be a huge hurdle but, also make the rest of the restoration smoother.
That's truly awesome. 😊 👍🏻
looking wonderful gentleman, keep up the good work
Great video… loved the format of showing work being done and then answering frequent questions….. i think its great how far you have come with these videos….. at least your making progress now…..
Keep them coming.
i guess its different in the States but in NZ the building code says you must have two doors between a kitchen and a toilet
but keep up the good work, who doesn't love a lighthouse
Whenever someone says "That stuff is garbage! Raaaar!" you can answer things like "Use something different on your lighthouse wooden bathroom floor then. Oh, you don't have one? Tough luck." :-D
Now now… 😂
beautiful work! I would love to see an organization like this for the crumbling lighthouses on the Great Lakes
I'm glad you remembered the most ii portent thing in a bathroom--Reading material. 8:30
It was the installation instructions for the waste treatment system 😂
The Lighthouse Centers is firing a shot across Motel6's bow because they too will now keep a light on for you :)
love yalls videos, this longer form was nice, but I liked that yall were a little more frequent previously.
We will definitely be posting more frequently moving forward. The next video will drop in 2 weeks. Thanks for following!
bye hopper! God bless you guys. I think I have adhd and some autism and this channel is very nice to follow the progress of this beautiful lighthouse
It is probably what we used to call "Bull Pine". It was very good because it was full of sap, and stayed well preserved.
Whoever is doing the hilarious editing, we see you.
👀
There are special colors to paint the tiles on the wall too. I've done this years ago with mine. They still look brand new.
I love lighthouses, and really enjoy your videos. If I lived close I would absolutely volunteer my time to help with this! Well done!
Excellent video thank you so much .
Thanks for watching
you should consider getting one of those floor sanding machines, i know there are lots of round edges and corners, but it makes quick work of any space over a foot wide .
We will definitely do that when we do an entire floor!
Both of you are doing a great job1 The old wooden floor is great!
Certainly a market for Airbnb as well
Reconsider putting up a solid wall behind the toilet bowl. The void behind (under the lower stairs) could be used for storage shelves and cupboards/drawers.
Another cracking videos chaps. Unless you really desperately need the toilet up an running, it would make great storage space for you. Keep up the great work an cant wait for the next installment. Pls dont make it to long
Next video is just about done. It’s a good one! Should be about a week or two. Thanks! Are you from the UK by chance? (Chaps, cracking… 😀)
Gentlemen, you are doing an awesome job. It is wonderful to see the progress of your hard work. I hope that you can raise enough revenue to keep this progressing at a rapid pace. Once again, keep up the excellent work and well done on this episode. Look forward to more content.
lmao, the editing is 10/10 :D
Please stop encouraging Thomas! It will only cause him to make more hilarious and entertaining videos. This is supposed to be a serious channel about restoring lighthouses and the proper use of undersized bathrooms. Every time you mention the editing, I have to buy him a coffee and now he’s jacked up on caffeine, working double speed in the studio!
Greetings from Argentina. I like watching your videos, always waiting for a new episode. Keep up the good work you are doing. I send you a big hug
Wow Argentina?! Thank you for watching and commenting 😊 We are sending you a big hug back! 🇦🇷 🤗
