Hello Friends! Things are happening. We bought a new laser for paint stripping and “Darge” the dock/barge has been delivered to our shop for modifications! We will be bringing you all this new content here and some extra behind the scenes videos on our patreon ProjectLighthouse. If you enjoy our content and like our mission, then please support us in any way you would like. (Like, subscribe, donate, follow) Thank you for watching! 😊
I understand you guys know paint but why didn't you use a zinc rich primer on the metal surfaces for additional protection? I do tons of metal work around the bay and we always use that.
@@metalmasterscYou are right. This is interior. On the exterior we will use a zinc filled epoxy primer. I don’t like to use regular zinc because it requires a near white metal surface prep, which is easy to get in the shop but not easy on site. Epoxies are more tolerant. I have seen epoxy mid coats delaminate from non epoxy based zinc primer. So that always concerns me. Thanks!
I live in a house built in 1937. We have a bathroom between our master bedroom and the living room that has only just enough space for a toilet, a tiny sink wedged into a corner. I'm not kidding.. a broad shouldered man would find his biceps brushing both sides of the bathroom walls. BUT.. it works. And the past builders put in a couple of mirrors that help the coffin sized bathroom "feel" larger than it is. Just a couple of notes I think you should consider. 1) Do your best to provide as much space as possible for movement of the body and elbows and such as the user er... umm.. wipes. 2) In a tiny space like that. You will NEED a way to vent smells outside. I suggest a modest fan with a pull chain, Connected to 3" metal ducting to a hole in the wall. You can cover the vent outlet with some really nice looking covers. 3) That curved steel wall.. is gonna act like a sound amplifier of whatever horrible things is going on inside the bathroom. There are times when you DON'T want to advertise that you are enduring the unfortunate consequences of a poor Taco choice. I suggest you apply a thin layer of sound deadening adhesive to those metal walls to help provide a bit of privacy. I like to use this stuff called Dyno-mat. It's about 1/8" thick, with adhesive back. And there are lots of competitors selling essentially the same thing on Amazon. I use it to deaden sound on vintage vehicles that I restore. Also... you could grab some of those pool noodles at WalMart. Slice them down their length on one side with a razor blade. Then push them onto the edges of those steel support beams to protect people's heads if they stand up to fast. Those pool noodles come in all sorts of colors. Love the vids. I'm a passionate and jealous fan. Keep them coming.
On the wood flooring, I would apply 2 coats then let them dry. Once dry, do final finish sand, tack rag the dust and apply a final 3rd coat. You will not be disappointed. Love your progress and the videos. Very exciting restoration project! Yes the wood is beautiful. Does the rest of the lighthouse have wooden floors as well???
Great video guys! Well done on the editing and restoration. The editing has been very engaging and good idea on answering questions during the Timelapse restoration. Bathroom came out awesome. It was really nice of you to include the kids in your video.
Put the toilet where you feel most comfortable under the stairs, then build the closer/bathroom wall out a few more feet to allow for a side door and more room for the sink! The plan totally works, you just need to give it a few more square feet to make it livable... . I love to analyze floor plans as a way to unwind. Great job so far! You're living something I dream of doing! Thanks for sharing!
That floor is probably Red Fir, Was used in lots of older housing and construction back in the day. Its actually quite hard for a soft wood. Great job guys, cant wait for more vids.
"How does that even happen??" Amazing work guys! My mother used to take off 2 weeks every year with her mother and visit every lighthouse they could find. So proud of you all for doing what you do!
A suggestion for the bathroom sink. Put a folding sink above the toilet. The drain goes out the back instead of out of the bottom. We had them in boats and compact campers. We actually had one of our people weld a toilet paper dispenser on one side(L/R) so it was available when the sink was up and out of the way when the sink was down.
Whenever someone says "That stuff is garbage! Raaaar!" you can answer things like "Use something different on your lighthouse wooden bathroom floor then. Oh, you don't have one? Tough luck." :-D
Did anyone else catch them say all three of them at 29:27 Because apparently they bought a third lighthouse. So great job on restoring three at one time I’m impressed. I’d love to see the progress on all three soon.
The third lighthouse is Craighill Channel Lower Range Front Light near Baltimore. Restoring 3 lighthouses at once is a ton of work but we are hoping that the channel will keep growing as we share videos about the process.
Regarding the Fishermen question: Probably there migth be some cave that a certain fish use(d) to hide. So when someone marked this spot on their fishfinder, it can be seen by other fishermen aswell, which would result in fishermen coming to your lighthouse. If they come to this cave and the fishfinder doesnt pick up anything, or just small fishes, they just go to the next spot. A fishfinder is basically a sonar instrument, that blasts sound into the water. If its being reflected, then you'll know that something is there. Because its being reflected by anything (even living objects), you can determine the size, species and form of the fish. People are often on the lookout for specific species that they want to eat or sell to a restaurant.
Suggestion for the bathroom, add a 'ceiling' along the underside of the steps sloping upward. It will give you a peripheral line in your vision when standing. I grew up around old houses with similar understair bathrooms and ones that had the sloped ceiling over the toilet , those I never hit my head on.
I can’t wait until this is finished so I can sign up to visit ( please toss a regular tour into your final mix along with special groups) You guys always entertain, love seeing the progress. Keep those videos coming and the 80’s rock alive!
Hey guys FYI there are ways of covering your camera so that doesn't happen whether it's with water paint whatever it protects the camera and then you just throw away the cover so there are also plastic lens covers that you can put over the lens and it just peels off and you throw it away
If you have fake dragonflies (or we have printed pictures) stuck around, flies will avoid at all costs because they know they'll be killed, we had loads of flies but after the dragonfly pictures stuck everywhere there is none
Thanks guys! I've missed you! So glad I'd already finished my tea, by the time the photos popped up with THE Hairdo!!!! 🤪That could have been a mess. The floor is gorgeous! 👍
In a future Q&A could you talk about all the rules and limitations you have to work with to help preserve the building? Maybe even interview the people you work with on camera.
Gentlemen, you are doing an awesome job. It is wonderful to see the progress of your hard work. I hope that you can raise enough revenue to keep this progressing at a rapid pace. Once again, keep up the excellent work and well done on this episode. Look forward to more content.
Looks like you need a new set of knobs for that door. They do make those still, they are called spindle knobs. There are cheap versions of course but I think the lighthouse deserves something a bit better then the bargain bin. I don't know what the plate they go into is made of, probably brass but you should check and they are sometimes plated (copper is a possibility as well), but some nice brass knobs would look great with the refinished door. Brass is also antimicrobial so a good bathroom door handle material. They do make reproduction hardware for not bad prices if you search it up or you could find an old piece for sale. Don't forget to clean the old locks as well and find new keys for them.
Dear Lighthouse Team, An idea for the Backwall of the Toilett. Mabye you can fit in a big pvc tube (like in undergroundwater) to fit in mops. It can go top down diagonal so you use a bit of the space. I hope you understand what i mean. Greetings from Germany
I was a lighthouse groupie in my younger years. I witnessed many of them some redone, some in horrific shape with 40 layers of paint falling off, and if I could have figured out a way to do it I would’ve bought one. I love the isolation, wanted my own little island for a small garden and chickens. But those cormorants would have to go. Gross birds.
I figure, the fishermen coming out to the lighthouse are only there to see what's going on up. Fishing can be pretty boring, so shooting the shit with random people is something different.
I am so glad is stumbled on this channel - although im all way over in London, UK. You could teach the Trinity Lighthouse charity a trick or two over here.
Cut a hole in a step for your head to stick out. Although, that might potentially ruin the amazing bathroom acoustics... so, maybe not. I must say that floor is breathtaking; old growth wood is something we need to preserve, everywhere possible. Keep up the awesome work, guys!
40:53 Queensrÿche! "I remember now... I remember how it started... I can't remember yesterday... I just remember doing what they told me... told me... told me... told me... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Are any of the Lighthouses haunted? What about a video on the History of the Lighthouses? Any plans for wind power and more Solar systems to be added to the Lighthouses? Any plans for a small Farm / Herb garden at any of the Lighthouses?
We will definitely bring out larger equipment when we get to refinishing whole rooms. Honestly, I thought this little room would sand faster than it did! Anyway, we got it done!
The floor looks nice. There's just one thing... you have no window or ventilation in that closet bathroom. A number 2 might stink up the whole lighthouse floor.😅 I don't know if there is a feasable solution for that problem, or if you're just gonna live with it 🤔
Could you have put the sink attached to the stairwell and turned the toilet so it was against the tiled wall?? Just a thought. Fantastic video as always and keep up the dad jokes 😂
It’s funny how people freak out about lead paint, you would have to eat the whole lighthouse to be a problem. I restored old trains since 1983. I am now 60 no traces of lead paint
According to research, lead exposure is more of a concern for young, developing brains. Honestly I am more concerned about getting junk in my lungs. No matter what it is. That’s never good. Regardless, we want to show good practices here as much as possible. Thanks!

Mount a couple of those Rubbermaid sheds outside so they don't blow away.

I've been looking forward to an update and the editing hasn't disappointed :).
Thanks! We are particularly proud of this one! It shows some great restoration with funny and embarrassing moments! 😅
Love the episode! The joke about jumping up after going to the toilet will live rent free in my head. :)
I did it! 😂 (I raised 4 kids so I know the pride of a child’s first poo in the toilet! -Rich)

Seems like a cool wedding venue, especially if you get the docking platform finished.
It will happen in 2025!
The weekend has started and a new lighthouse centers video is out. What a time to be alive
Top comment here! Have a great weekend my friend 😊

I love this series any your work. keep it up!
❤ thank you for the inspiring comment!
People take for granted how a "simple" bathroom takes effort to build, nicely done.
Prison toilet would work in that small space. It has the sink on top of the commode.
já estava ancioso querendo ver a continuação da reforma
Lighthouses are awesome!
Always good to see you guys.
Always good to read your comment SpaceCat ❤️
There's Lead in the old finishes and paints on the floor, too 😉 Thanks for the update
Yeah. It’s never good to inhale anything, honestly.
The floor is looking beautiful! I'm looking forward to more!
23:28 L👀ks amazing !! Well done !
Thanks!

Thanks. The positive comments mean a lot to us!
Another great video - I always look forward to these. Congratulations on the new toilet, all your hard work is paying off.
Thanks! We are finally getting up to speed 😊
That's truly awesome. 😊 👍🏻

Both of you are doing a great job1 The old wooden floor is great!

That yellowing was from staining sometimes over time stains will yellow
Whenever someone says "That stuff is garbage! Raaaar!" you can answer things like "Use something different on your lighthouse wooden bathroom floor then. Oh, you don't have one? Tough luck." :-D
Now now… 😂
Amazing video, I loved the longer format. I will be fun joining you on your new youtube journey!
Greetings from Sydney Australia. Love it!

Those kids on the boat were awesome. Good job parents!
i don’t understand why i love this channel… i just do it’s so interesting and your guys bond is amazing😂

love yalls videos, this longer form was nice, but I liked that yall were a little more frequent previously.
We will definitely be posting more frequently moving forward. The next video will drop in 2 weeks. Thanks for following!
Unlike the other commenter, you do not have to fully restore it to what it was when first built. What you all are doing is just fine.
I can’t wait until this is finished so I can sign up to visit ( please toss a regular tour into your final mix along with special groups) You guys always entertain, love seeing the progress. Keep those videos coming and the 80’s rock alive!
I'm glad you remembered the most ii portent thing in a bathroom--Reading material. 8:30
It was the installation instructions for the waste treatment system 😂
When building our home, I found it easier and quicker to paint the quarter round/edging before installing.....also saved on tape 😊
There are special colors to paint the tiles on the wall too. I've done this years ago with mine. They still look brand new.
It's the changes in varnish over the years
"Fishermen" probably think the lighthouse is abandoned and want to explore then scoot pretty quick when they realize someone is there.
Haven't watched yet but I'm commenting for algorithm, you guys deserve a ton of views
Hey guys FYI there are ways of covering your camera so that doesn't happen whether it's with water paint whatever it protects the camera and then you just throw away the cover so there are also plastic lens covers that you can put over the lens and it just peels off and you throw it away

The content cram during the timelapses is a great idea. Thanks guys!
Thanks for the update.
39:10 I don't think it's embarrassing at all! Nice update! looking forward to new content :)
Pretty colored floor. How incredible! Good job!
I love Hooper island light caught the two biggest fish in my life there
On camera that looks great but I am sure it looks some much better in person. Job well done fellas.
MAGIC JUST LIKE YOU BOYS Light house WIZARDS
In a future Q&A could you talk about all the rules and limitations you have to work with to help preserve the building? Maybe even interview the people you work with on camera.
How about a small door in the bathroom wall for extra supplies ? Mabie add a shelf in the space...✌👍
As an architect, I would have advised locating the basin outside the toilet closet
How does that even happen??
Jokes aside, thanks for the great videos 😊
😅 it happens! Thanks for watching 😊
great video, you dudes crack me up with yer narrating.
Kodo's to a job well done.
Gentlemen, you are doing an awesome job. It is wonderful to see the progress of your hard work. I hope that you can raise enough revenue to keep this progressing at a rapid pace. Once again, keep up the excellent work and well done on this episode. Look forward to more content.
Installing that toilet must be a tankless job.
Dad joke counter = 4 😂
Beautiful wood floor color.❤

Greetings from Germany
Very nice guys awesome job
Some of the lighthouses along Lake Superior were converted to bed-and-breakfasts. We have stayed at a couple of them. Very interesting places to stay.
Maybe in the wall you build you could put some tall pop open cupboards for toilet paper storage
Definitely!
Finally! 2 months is way to long but im glad we got a nice an long video
I was a lighthouse groupie in my younger years. I witnessed many of them some redone, some in horrific shape with 40 layers of paint falling off, and if I could have figured out a way to do it I would’ve bought one. Yep. The good news is the more you are out there, the more they stay away
You are doing an amazing work restoring this lighthouse. Do you have any idea when you think this project will be completed?
We should have most of the restoration done and the dock built this year (2025) so we can start giving tours and hosting events!
I believe the wood floor is fir, it is a pretty soft wood, Thanks for the recording.
I figure, the fishermen coming out to the lighthouse are only there to see what's going on up. Fishing can be pretty boring, so shooting the shit with random people is something different.
A skylit drive 💪🏼
Put storage behind the wall behind the toilet!
Custom made plywood drawers cut at the same curve as the walls when you slide them out!!!
Or just a sliding panel hiding a toilet paper stash.. would hate to be caught short out there :)
I am so glad is stumbled on this channel - although im all way over in London, UK. You could teach the Trinity Lighthouse charity a trick or two over here.
I think you’re idea of monitoring over the video is an important and amazing idea
Thank u for a great vedio! It came to me at the end of a really busy work week! Appreciate it...😊
We need more frequent videos posted!
by the plastic boxes made for those kinds of cameras cheaper than replacing the cameras
The bathroom should be on the second floor some of the storms up it doesn't flood the room
Cut a hole in a step for your head to stick out. Although, that might potentially ruin the amazing bathroom acoustics... so, maybe not. I must say that floor is breathtaking; old growth wood is something we need to preserve, everywhere possible. Keep up the awesome work, guys!
If they would like volunteers I can start Monday.
❤
40:53 Queensrÿche! "I remember now... I remember how it started... I can't remember yesterday... I just remember doing what they told me... told me... told me... told me... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Pretty sure that's lead paint.
🤣 Sorry. I had to.
Much love, your videos always make my day.
Are any of the Lighthouses haunted? What about a video on the History of the Lighthouses? Any plans for wind power and more Solar systems to be added to the Lighthouses? Any plans for a small Farm / Herb garden at any of the Lighthouses?
Really enjoying these video's the floor turned out awesome. You guy's seeing any drones? it' s all over the news now I'm guessing you might.
Instead of a wall maybe a wall and shelf combo that you can store your paper and cleaning products for bathroom maintenance
Shame you couldn’t get an all in one sink toilet combo like in prisons.
Douglas fir floors. Rent a floor edger next time or a festool rotex 150 would speed up the process
We will definitely bring out larger equipment when we get to refinishing whole rooms. Honestly, I thought this little room would sand faster than it did! Anyway, we got it done!
Awesome
The floor looks nice.
There's just one thing... you have no window or ventilation in that closet bathroom.
A number 2 might stink up the whole lighthouse floor.😅
I don't know if there is a feasable solution for that problem, or if you're just gonna live with it 🤔
Put the toilet on the second floor cuz the flooding during storms
31:50 Saying that makes me realise that you can work on things all night... Who is gonna complain about the noise? The fish?
We did get a cease and desist letter from the fish 🤨
Could you have put the sink attached to the stairwell and turned the toilet so it was against the tiled wall??
Just a thought.
Fantastic video as always and keep up the dad jokes 😂
oh my god finally
It’s funny how people freak out about lead paint, you would have to eat the whole lighthouse to be a problem. I restored old trains since 1983. I am now 60 no traces of lead paint
