  • AMD announced Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) back at CES, and it has finally arrived in the latest driver. It uses the same upscaling algorithm as FSR but it is applied at the driver level, meaning it can work in any game you want, without specific integration. We put it to the test, comparing it against FSR, NIS and DLSS... Read more here: bit.ly/3wmwVFE

      Not really that often, but it does come in handy for some games in 4k. Although I really prefer the full resolution, even if that means losing some frames. I have to say the last driver was really good and cyberpunk with RT and fidelty high would run at 68 fps average. I agree, that it would be nice to have on older cards. I bet they will add it to older cards later, just like they added some features to older CPUs. But you are right about the zooming in, in reality you do not notice the small diferences and if it gives a boost, fantastic.

    Features AMD introduced since RDNA1 was introduced in July 2019 (~3 years ago):
    - Radeon Image Sharpening - DX9 - DX10 - DX11
    - Anti-Lag - DX9 - DX10 - DX11
    - Radeon Boost - DX11
    - FSR 1.0
    - SAM (Resizable Bar)
    - AMD Smartshift (for laptops)
    - minimal driver installation
    - driver Auto Overclock / Auto Underclock / Auto VRAM Overclock (also known as "RAGE" mode for the RDNA2 launch - this feature is garbage IMO)
    - Ryzen CPU overclock/underclock in drivers, instead of relying on Ryzen Master (way, way too iffy though, so meh)
    What AMD further polished in the meantime:
    - Radeon Image Sharpening - enabled for DX12 - Vulkan
    - Anti-Lag - enabled for DX12 (not sure about Vulkan?)
    - Radeon Boost - enabled for DX12 and on RDNA2 (DX12U capable), it now uses Variable Rate Shading instead of Dynamic Resolution
    - SAM support on RDNA1
    - RSR (driver FSR 1.0 injection)
    - FSR 2.0
    - Radeon Chill was tunned a bit, I think?
    - Removed and re-added (?): FRTC - framerate target control - kinda some thing as Chill, but only as a frame cap and not trying to dynamically control GPU clocks/TDP like Chill does
    That's a great list of features IMO.

    • @paul1979uk2000
      @paul1979uk2000 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      True and speaking of Radeon Boost, I was hoping by now that it would allow us to set it where it goes off frame rate and not motion, basically for now, it goes of mouse movement in lowering the resolution which I would think it makes more sense to go on frame rates so say you dip a little under 60fps, it drops the resolution to bump the frame rate up and son on.
      That would make that a lot more useful compared to going on controller input because that will lower the resolution regardless of hardware power you have, in other words, you're getting a worse image a lot of the times when it's not needed.

    Been testing this like crazy since yesterday afternoon and it seems to actually do what it claims to do! with a 6800XT on a 3900X I was able to render Cyberpunk at 1440p and RSR upscale it to 4K. With a bit of juggling settings around, dropping a few of the ultra down to high (the ones that show no real difference between the two) I was able to manage a capped 60fps with all of the raytracing turned on. This came in at around 70% GPU load, 55°C. That's quite impressive for RDNA2, which up until the recent 1.5 patch has run Cyberpunk like an absolute pig. I'm well happy with that.
    There IS an annoying downside to using RSR though, it often buggers up all of your window placements, like Steam, GOG etc. Still trying to figure that one out.

    Most of the improvement seen with dlss in HZD is from it replacing the game's aa with it's own implementation, using a better aa option with rsr gets a better result on bushes than fsr does because fsr in HZD is locked to the game's taa option which causes most of that shimmering

I had been using FSR 1 on Vega 8 for years now. This limitation is on Windows, Open drivers mean it not the case for us. Epic's and Nvidia API's both need to be on Windows or over Priced Nvidia Hardware. RSR might need a higher GPU overhead. When they open the code to public we will find out why it only of newer hardware. Because I would love to use it on my Vega to get better FPS even at 1080p.

    There's good reasons why AMD prioritised RDNA2, they want to sell cards and Nvidia have an edge in 4K with both raw performance and DLSS mindshare.
    Building on FSR for the 4K market is logical.
    Secondly many experts have said upscaling works better above 1080p and wrongly disregarded the low end where playability can be an issue.
    Driver development costs money so supporting all cards would divert resources.

  • @vidfreak56

    In game FSR implementations will always be at the engine level (negative LOD bias levels to "sharpen textures for example, with selective high resolution edge creation), while RSR is at the driver level (maybe it creates a high res edge?...not sure). It honestly does an OUTSTANDING job(minus issues with TAA and shimmering). Far better in a lot of games than me using regular 1440p upscaling with RIS. And it also uses RIS at one point so i dont have to enable both of them (it actually wont let you anyways) and tinker to get the sharpness right (its all ready done!). This is definitely something that will only improve their customer base. I also dont get why they didnt release this for older GFX cards.

      Driver level is a bad thing in this case. The main trick about FSR looking pretty decent is that while the game will be rendered at the downscales resolution, the post processing will be done at native resolution. Post processing is what adds more blur to videogames nowadays, things like TAA, chromatic aberration and so so on. Adding it at driver level means everything will be upscaled.

I use 4k resolution with 200% scaling, but when I try to use 50% rendering, it actually changes the desktop setting to 1080p with 200% scaling.Thus, it doubles the mouse speed. Finally, someone that did it in a normal way to how gamers play games, I mean, it's all well and good zooming in 300%, 400% on an image to find flaws whiles pausing the image but that's just not how we game.
    What matters is how does the final image look in a way that you play the game and I have to say even thought this is a 1080p resolution using RSR, the image actually looks quite good considering the limited data it's working with, even the hud elements and text looks more or less fine to me that I suspect to most gamers it's fine.
    Sometimes tech sites can overanalyze these things and forget what actually matters to gamers.
    It will be interesting to see what FSR 2.0 brings to the table soon and if that will offer driver level support.

    To me this feature is just awesome for a handheld like the Legion Go which has a VERY high resolution screen (1600p) running on an iGPU (780M). I can run Monster Hunter Stories in native 1440p (letterboxed) at around 50FPS while I can run it in 1080p with RSR at 70-80FPS. And since the screen doesn't have VRR (to me the one MAJOR drawback of the device. Otherwise I would never consider a competitor like the ROG Ally and let's be honest I still did get the Legion Go) being able to get it to 60 is necessary in order to avoid tearing. I don't know if it is supported by the iGPU in the Steam Deck. But it definitely works in the 780M found in the Z1 Extreme.

    An in game sharpening feature is a must even for DLSS. Some DLSS 2.0 games can look excellent but some with a fixed sharpness can look too blurry just like Marvels Avengers. Some FSR games look horrid and oversharpened and need a sharpness slider to tune it in the other direction. Not sure why all games with these upscaling tech can't offer that slider to fine tune the look to your preference.

    Yes, I am going to be that guy, 1080p isn't a valid testing resolution (except in things like super high frame rate game play) cuz it still looks like crap. It is nearly impossible to get rid of jaggies in 1080p without cranking AA while in even 1440p you only need to use the most basic AA to get rid of the little bit of jaggies that are present. I do fully admit that I am biased against 1080p but I personally think 1080p looks bad and comparing any 1080 image vs any other 1080 image is just an act of futility because both images still look like crap to me. Again, this is all just my personal opinion. :)

    I think there is actually a reason for the 5000- and 6000- series to be first out with RSR. Looking at Magpie and Lossless Scaling both applications break freesync support as well as adds a frame of delay. Looking at RSR, it is much more integral to the rasterization process itself, reducing latency while keeping freesync support intact. This is probably the main reason why AMD need to implement it much closer to the hardware/driver level. RDNA and RDNA2 most likely share a very similar rasterization process, meanwhile VEGA has a completely different rasterization process. Looking at Linux the main reason why proton can use FSR on any game has to do that the developers target the translation layer. (you can't use FSR in openGL/Vulkan/native Linux games). RSR works with all APIs and is done on a lower driver level. Overhead seems extremely low as well, so I bet this is most likely the cause of the current limitation to 5000- and 6000 GPUs. However, I too really hope that Vega gets support eventually since it is still being sold in laptops.

    If you have compatible 1080p monitor, you can use AMD virtual super resolution and then use RSR / FSR to try things out. It's a great tool to have.

      @warnacokelat 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RSKenan my bad. it seems that RSR can only be used to upscale from sub native resolution to native. can't upscale to virtual 4K.
      however FSR can upscale things to 4K even with 1080p native resolution.

      @@warnacokelat RSR and FSR are close to similar. Both of them are upscaler (performance booster). So, how did FSR can do that? If you want to render 4K @ 1080p monitor, you could use Virtual Super Resolution like you did before (decrease performance).

      I have 5700XT. Do I lower resolution from 1080 down to what? AMD says 1600x900 when I turn on RSR for Battlefield 2042. Which is actually supported surprisingly! Can't even tell if frames went up or not. But it looked fuzzy. Low settings on graphics .

      @@allenanalla2549 If you use 1080p monitor, you have to manually set your game resolution below 1080p to make RSR works. If the game support FSR, just enabled it and then the game engine automatically downgrade your in game resolution and upscale it. In my opinion, RSR and FSR works well on native resolution above 1440p.

      RSR works for every game, it works on the driver software level.

    • @ladrok97
      @ladrok97 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FSR must be implemented into game. FSR is considered earlier in "creating frame" than RSR, which should result in better quality (thus their advice to pick FSR over RSR). RSR is driver solution, you can use it on ANY game. Like I played Sacred Gold today thanks to this solution

    If you're honest with yourself, you will admit that RSR doesn't do much. If you drop the resolution to 1440p and turn RSR on, the result isn't anywhere near 4k. The image enhancement is so slight you won't really notice its on until you toggle it back and forth using the the hot key alt-U. You will have to look at the smallest details to even see the change. RSR is 1440p very slightly enhanced.
