But she got her revenge the following year and year thereafter by winning not only the Russian contests in two consecutive years but 60 more awards and contests. And you’ll witness a yodeling masterpiece and if you stay to near the end of the judges commentary ( making excuses and lying) you will hear a brief portion of the French song the judges asked her to sing that she NAILED! Okay, Andy - This is the second video where I've seen you marvel at the sound of this singer's voice. This is a voice that I have used for years, though, I used it to do voice-over work, rather than singing. I tried using it again with this video, and the previous one you did, to see if it works with singing, and it sounds spot-on, to me. Here's how I do it (And, assume she's doing the same thing): It's a technique that I call "dead-tongue", do to the lack of tongue movement - With the front part of my tongue pressed firmly against the back of my lower teeth, I raise the middle of my tongue toward the roof of my mouth (it doesn't touch), I spread the sides of my tongue out against both of the insides of my cheeks, and imagine that sound travels under the sides of my tongue, and out where my tongue dips down at the back of my bottom teeth. It sounds kind of complicated, and it can tire your tongue quickly, if you're not used to doing it. This creates a dark, deep, smokey, rich sound; it's definitely different from a normal voice. I even used this once to do the voice of a talking donkey - lot's of fun.
That is fascinating! Very well stated to let me know what you're talking about. You're completely right about this being a lack of using the tongue in a traditional way for singing, especially the back of the tongue. Wow! Thanks for the post!!
