I could hear your frustration in the beginning and your excitement at the end as well as your being out of breath. As any sport that requires balance there is a learning curve and once you pass that hurdle from there on out it's just challenging yourself and pushing your limits as what you can do next.
Yeah I was having a ton of fun but I was also unsure about throttle since I was also breaking the engine in per the manual so that makes it a bit harder. Also even with my lack of experience I could feel the chine walk far better riders than me experience. I got the pro water craft sponsons and they felt great. I also realized I ride best in a goofy stance with the outside of my left foot in line with the tray. I'll get better and start shifting my feet more eventually.
Just bought my first ski at 60 years old. Didn't think I was going to be able to do it. Challenging as heck. But I did finally stood up after about a half hour. Couldn't believe what a "bleepin" workout it was.
FIRST SKI AT 60?! THATS AWESOME! Dude, I hope to be out here in my 60s and beyond! You're badass! My grandpa was out waterskiing well into his 90s and he was a role model for me!
When I first started a seasoned rider told me first few times don't even worry about trying to stand. Just ride on your knee's. After a while try standing. Throttle keeps you from falling but everyone's first instinct is to let off the gas. 2 years later I have fully modified SXR and I love it.
I bought an sxr in 22 and have been learning. Its hard to learn when you ride on and off. It takes time, but pace yourself. I usually go out for an hour to an hour and a half at a time. As you know…you get tired….especially if you have to swim to the ski a few times. I ride pretty good now…Im just working on tight turns.
The 22 was so good looking. The bronze accents were so dope. I had a deposit on the 22 but moved before the dealer received one... now that I think about it they never ended up getting 22 SXR. As you said, pacing and breaks is all about it. It is super enjoyable though and like weight lifting or other taxing activities sometimes you have to back off! But yeah I really enjoy it. I've been trying to ride weekly. Hard to do with my job!
@@badm0t0rf1ng3r i actually bought a 2018 ski in 22. The guy I bought it from had bought it NEW from a dealer in 21. After getting my local dealer to finally get what they needed to see the hours…the ski had 3 hrs on it in august of 22 when i bought it. Ive got about 25 hrs on it now. It’s a lot of fun and a good workout to ride!
Love the paint scheme on those newer ones. Remember to keep center of gravity low. Often you have to turn in direction you are falling to correct.. but think of it as two turns.. one to get Jetski back underneath your feet and another to get back straight.. of course throttle being key to any turning.
Thank you for the pointers! I liked the SXR very much and nearly picked one up in 2022 (the bronze accents were really good looking) but when I saw the red and grey color scheme I went out of my way to get a 2024.
getting after it! keep at it bro! the beginning is super frustrating! momentum is your friend. just like a bicycle, the faster you are moving the easier it is to balance. and when trying to turn, lower your center of gravity and use your momentum to carry you through the corner. start with gradual turns and build from there. if you feel yourself falling over/ losing your balance, pull your chest to the bars and give it lots of throttle. that works 9/10. practice practice practice. nothing beats tray time. if you know of a local spot where people ride go watch what they are doing. how and when are they setting up for turns. whats there body position. then when you feel comfortable, get out there and ride with them. hopefully they are helpful. enjoy bro!
When I was out in California there was a spot a lot of the racers practiced at, and its part of the reason I ended up getting this. Not a huge buoy course community here, a bit of a surf rider thing, but obviously this ski aint for that. I'm enjoying it a lot, thanks for the comment!
I am so stoked for you. I am in my early 30s and this is my first standup, rode a few growing up but never owned one. I spent about 3 hours out on my first ride. I was having loads of fun but boy its a workout!
Thank you! I grew up in Alaska and never got to scratch that itch until now. I bought my wife the Spark trixx so she could drag me to the ski when I fall lol.
@@acehanke8916 The Trixx is such a good ski too! I have a family friend who has one and I love cranking the trim all the way up and "wheelie" it around stationary boats!
I just bought my first stand up this summer, a 2017 SXR 1500. It sure has been a steep learning curve so far. Get rid of the factory sponsons and it will be a better machine. My machine has an WCOT intake and a TBM plate and pro water craft sponsons and it is way better then stock. But then again I have limited knowledge but is sure felt better for me so far. I want to try a different set of sponsons and a Jet Dynamics ride plate just because it is longer and I am a big dude. Edit: LoL at the 7 minute mark when you started falling off immediately and not getting on I laughed and said he is tired. I was there myself a few times. You do so well at the start then start screwing up. One has to engage the brain and think about what you are doing for muscle memory!
I honestly was asking myself "did I make a mistake?". you're absolutely right the learning curve is steep, but super fun! I also got rid of the factory sponsons after the first ride. I went with Pro Watercraft sponsons as well and I really like them. I'm very happy with how it rides otherwise. I have a pole spring and a 4 degree bar on the shelf for future modifications. I did a long ride over Memorial Day weekend and it was thoroughly enjoyable. Thanks for commenting. I definitely was dying after my first ride.
@@badm0t0rf1ng3r Yeah it can be disheartening. I felt defeated a few times but I keep going. As our weather has been so bad I have not had enough time riding so far. My local lake is about 59 degrees right now so I am hoping it will warm up soon.
@R1Kyle if you could find a wetsuit for your build that could extent your riding season quite a bit. I was in florida and the water was still quite cold despite the weather being in the low 70s
Thank you for the tips. I hope the translator works well, but i was riding using a full wet suit because it was pretty cold and I could feel it help stiffen my back like a belt when lifting.
Yeah well learning the bell curve of throttle at first was pretty hairy, plus during break in the instructions tell me to only use so much throttle. It was fun. More the throttle the better.
