I’m so glad people aren’t afraid to call her out and call her calculated because that’s exactly what she is. A couple years ago she did an interview trying to gaslight people by saying if you call her calculated instead of a smart business woman then you’re basically misogynistic because you wouldn’t say that about a man. Nah, being calculated has nothing to do with gender and everything to do with being human.
It's true that the "conniving, sneaky woman" is a sexist trope and women are judged by different standards than men. But it's also true that women are capable of exploitation, manipulation, and toxicity - especially within positions of wealth and power, as Taylor is. Not all of the criticism levied at her is misogyny, and I'm tired of her fans hiding behind that because they can't accept their idol is flawed.
Ugh. It's clearly about the connotation of the word. You can see with this creator, he's calling her calculated as a synonym for strategic. Taylor was noting how most people call her "calculated" to imply nefarious intentions; that she's conniving instead of deliberate or premeditated. Even the fact that you said "call her out" as opposed to "analyse" illustrates this. Poster isn't "calling her out", he's not being malicious by noting she's calculated. I honestly don't think Taylor would think this video is misogynistic. He's calling her calculated the same way Kobe called her a killer. It's an acknowledgment of her savvy business strategy without the condemnation attached that usually comes with people calling her calculated (the same condemnation and connotation you clearly attach to it). She is absolutely a capitalist. She is absolutely calculated about her career. As a synonym for strategic, premeditated, deliberate, intentional. But it's not a bad thing. That interview pointed out the reality that for some reason being calculated is bad when she does it. Kendrick was calculated in the rap beef with Drake. No one is tarring him for that, nor should they. So when people recognise that she's calculated without stigmatising her for it, as this creator has done, I doubt Taylor, or anyone with a thinking brain would have a problem with it.
@@SiriuslyPotty I used the phrase “call her out” as a less formal way of saying “to bring to light” that’s all. But even then, to be calculated and strategic in the music industry comes with malicious intent. All artists are in a constant battle to stay on top and that includes Taylor. You have to knock people down to do so and that. It’s malicious, it’s greedy, and you can’t be a capitalist without those aspects. Being calculated is not a bad thing when she does it, it’s a bad thing when she tried to hide behind feminism to make her calculations seem less malicious, strategic, and capitalist. Also, rap beef like the one between Kendrick and Drake IS calculated and malicious not because of greed or capitalism, but because they truly don’t like each other and are trying to knock each other down with disses. And as far as rap beef goes, this is one of the most authentic rap beef rap fans have had since Tupac and Biggie. There is nothing wrong with being calculated and there’s nothing wrong with being strategic. Hell, we all have our malicious moments at times, even children. But don’t think that just because you are a woman that you are none of those things. Women have every capability of being assholes and douchebags the same as men. And clearly her calculated and strategic business moves are working so to add onto a list of yet another thing that annoys me so much about her is that she cared too much about what people think of her and it’s exhausting. Beyoncé and Rhianna are also billionaires and titans in the industry and they don’t take even the fraction of the time to address half the bullshit she does when it comes to offhand comments. I love this take-very educational and well-curated. I've learned so much, thank you. I must add that people often overlook how she skyrocketed her success using Kpop marketing techniques. I used to be a fan of BTS, and I am also a marketing and branding strategist. I have observed how Taylor Swift adopted a lot from Kpop to market her comeback and her Eras tour. Her whole recent blow-up and skyrocketing revenue are definitely heavily adapted from marketing techniques used in Kpop, which is a huge money machine and the group leader for parasocial fanbase. Taylor’s meticulous planning with her Eras Tour definitely echoes strategies seen in Kpop-such as the use of multiple album versions, exclusive merchandise, surprise releases, and how they use social media. It’s impressive how she’s tapped into that powerhouse model to reignite her brand globally, much like Kpop idols do to sustain momentum. Taylor studied that and doubled it. She definitely has a killer mindset and it's very fascinating to observe.
It seems her shtick is she is like a Princess that can seduce men, and the young girls (even some women) are watching her to try to come to be like her or live vicariously through her, to seduce Prince Charming. Though in other videos she’s hanging out with what we would observe to be her friends. I also noticed her lyrics don’t really rhyme but is a non-rhyming narrative. Apparently her fans are paying attention to the narrative, the story being told must mean something to her fans. I would like to see a psychological analysis of the story being told.
Have to say, most people making videos about Taylor's marketing strategy and recipe for success are haters masquerading as essayists; there's usually a negative connotation to the word "calculated", for example. But watching the whole video, I see that you really are analysing her strategic moves and using the word calculated with the original denotive meaning. Yes, she is a marketing and business savant, and the considered architect of her own success. I like that you weren't necessarily trying to ascribe good or bad morality to this, simply an analysis of how she got where she is. Thoroughly enjoyed this.
Good analysis but there are a few things you’ve missed in my opinion. Compounding factor: she dated between 8-10 celebrities. Britney, Madonna, Rhianna and Beyonce only dated 1 each; her stance for women’s rights. This in particular makes her image be perceived as more progressive. But the big differentiation factor in my opinion, that turned her Coca-Cola brand into Champagne is the musical credibility (in terms of quality) of her latest four albums. Madonna, Beyonce, Rhianna or Britney would never do an acoustic record. She did two; such artists would seldom write lyrics with lots of symbolism and hundreds of songs with hidden meanings, where people go online and do hundreds of thousands of TikToks about what x or y song really means .I can only recall such frenzy for “Becky with the good hair” (Beyonce song lyric). Finally, those same artists are only partly their own songwriters and don’t really play instruments, while Taylor Swift consistently writes all of her own songs and plays guitar and piano both on the albums and live. She has now transcended the pop star image and gone to compete with rock bands for the world stage. The rock-indie-singer/songwriter vibe in her last 4 albums was actually kickstarted by Ryan Adams, who re-recorded her album 1989 into an acoustic cover album. Typically, pop stars don’t cross over but she did. Now there are 50 year old men who are fans. Beyoncé is trying (she did a cover of Jolene, Dolly Parton’s song) but she’s not there yet.
I understand the points you are trying to make, and I understand that you are looking to provide guidance to an audience of content creator entrepreneurs. Much of what you say is certainly true. Taylor Swift is undoubtedly a smart businesswoman and is willing to play hardball when she has to. Our society respects this without reservation for people like Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos. It's only because Taylor is a woman that some people try to hang a label like “calculating” on Taylor, as though that's a pejorative. Some of what you say is rather clearly incorrect. For instance, you said that throughout her career Taylor has avoided controversy. I'm not sure what rock you've been living under, but ever since 2009 Taylor has had to deal with one controversy after another, almost always because of the actions of others. From Kanye West's behavior at the MTV Music Video Awards to the DJ who groped Taylor's ass then had the nerve to sue her when he was understandably fired, to the “liargate” scandal of 2016 when Kanye West (yes, again!) and Kim Kardashian promoted a false narrative at Taylor's expense to the decline of her relationship with her original label and specifically with Scott Borchetta and the sale of her music catalogue to Scooter Braun, Taylor has faced many scandals and controversies. Add to that the fact that she is a very polarizing celebrity. Yes, she has a legion of devoted and very loyal fans, but she also is hated by millions of people, including, as of late, most of the political right wing in America, especially the members of Donald Trump's MAGA cult. As Taylor wrote in the song “Peace” “the rain is always gonna come if you're standing with me.” And that brings me to my last comment. As much as you can say Taylor is successful because of her business savvy, her attitude, her willingness to go to great lengths to realize her achievements (all true, of course), none of that would be worth a dime without the most important element of her success, her talent. In particular, her writing talent. Yes, she is an effective marketer, but she backs that up by repeatedly delivering albums filled with compelling songs and lyrics that millions of people find moving and relatable. She has compounded that writing talent by becoming an indefatigable entertainer whose current concert tour is unprecedented. To create a brand as successful as Taylor's you'd better start by knowing how to create a product as compelling and consistent as her writing and her music. Good luck with that. Or, as Taylor says at the end of “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” try and come for her job.
And McDonalds makes the most stunning, soul-satisfying, artisan gourmet food on the planet. Oh wait. No. They don't. Mediocrity is profitable! Oh well, nice try.
@@DisappearingNightly McDonald's isn't really a fair comparison. Its place is in being cheap, the place you go when there's nothing else. that's why they've been having issues of late. You can't really do art with the idea of just being cheap, not if you want to last as long as a Taylor Swift or Eminem or Paul McCartney. For that, you need to make content that resonates with people on a deeper level... Or do you really believe that the decline of Hollywood movies as they've gotten more stale and lifeless is just a coincidence? No one without talent makes it in entertainment, at least not for a long time. There's a reason no one really thinks about Vanilla Ice that much. The industry has made various plants over the decades, and they always fail.
@@jesuszamora6949 Actually McDonald's is a much better comparison than you think. Their prices have risen faster than inflation over the decades, yet their quality has remained the same and they have not only maintained their profit margins, they have actually increased them over time. That's capitalism. And that's my point. Taylor is a primarily a business person. Music is merely the product and, like the venerable big mac, its purpose and function is not to wow the discerning, but rather to keep the cash flowing. It's a means to an end. Its success or failure rests solely on how much capital it brings in. If it generates revenue it is, by the cold, dreary standards of pure capitalism, good. But again that's how capitalism works. Brand recognition and units sold define everything. There are literally dozens upon hundreds of better, more talented, more creative and gifted musicians plying their trade in clubs and small concert venues around the world who struggle to earn a modest living from their craft. Having a dubious cult following is not a testimony to greatness, or perhaps you don't follow American politics closely enough to grasp the obvious parallels I'm pointing out.
This guy: Why is Taylor Swift so popular? Me, Swiftie: It's her songwriting. This guy: All American Girl? Me: No, Songwriting. This guy: A killer attitude? Me: Yes, but started with her songwriting. This guy: Parasocial connection? Me: Yes, partly, she started on MySpace where she shared her songwriting. This guy: CoMpOuNdInG InTeReSt?
I think you should just LISTEN to her songs first, and I'm not talking about Shake it Off. She's a lyrical mastermind and it's one of the reason of her success
