  • Elsenham Level Crossing, Elsenham, Essex on the West Anglia Main Line.
    Location: Old Mead Road, Elsenham
    Date Filmed: 29-06-2019
    -
    Nearest Station: Elsenham
    -
    Trains:
    Class 317 (Greater Anglia)
    Gated level crossing in Elsenham, Essex beside the station. Its surprising that this crossing still has gates given the business of this line. There is a very large footbridge to cross the line when the gates are shut, but many people would probably prefer to wait. Quite strangely, this crossing has alarms which sound, alerting the signalman (and pedestrians) that a train is due and the gates should be closed. Previously, bells were used but since, 'YO5' yodalarms are now used. This is especially rare.
    Thanks For Watching!

    hard to believe that this situation exists in our "modern" era; that a rail-employee has to walk out of his workplace/office to close two gates manually, and then re-open them. Thanks for an interesting experience.

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, there are still quite a few crossings like this which have to be manually closed, however most of them are on quiet rail lines and quiet roads with only a couple of trains per hour. This crossing, on the other hand, is on a reasonably busy road with several trains each hour.

  • @amandasmith3303
    @amandasmith3303 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I like the alarm on this one and the fact that a signalman manually operates the gates. A rare sight.

    This set-up kinda reminds me of the Grain Manual Crossing in Kent but without the wigwags - there is an alarm which sounds when the gates should be shut, although it doesn't stay on throughout the closure here or is operated by the signaller! Speaking of whom, I guess the poor person must have is work cut out for him as this is a very busy line connecting London with Cambridge and beyond!!! Also, that is one MASSIVE footbridge! I'd be tempted to wait here to be honest instead of making the rush via that enormous thing! It's unsightly in an area like that!!! Anyway, brilliant video, UKLCC! I'm not normally interested in manually gated crossings but this is certainly one of the more interesting ones! Surprised it's still as it is on this busy line! 👍😁

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! 😁 Yeah, there's a lot of trains and these are some big gates so it's constant opening and closing. Yeah, the footbridge is absolutely massive. I was going to use it but didn't have time in the end unfortunately.

    As busy as this crossing is, all that opening and closing the gates must have the gatekeeper fit and trim-I’d wager the poor man barely gets a chance to sit down! Still, it’s nice to see a touch of the old-school ways in this fast-paced modern world we live in, and that fellow seems to have the opening/closing rhythm down pat!

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, there's a reasonable number of trains each hour so there's a constant opening and closing of the gates. Indeed, nice to see an old level crossing still surviving on a busy line like this!

    Those power cables at the top look awfully close to the bridge. What happens if one of them touches during a violent storm or whatever?

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They look close from a distance but there's more of a gap than you think. If they touch the bridge I am imagine there would be some sort of spark or arc flash since its metal. That's highly unlikely to happen though.

    I would be grateful if someone could satisfy my curiosity: how many times in a day does a worker have to go through this routine. I note one of the comments below indicates that this is a heavy-traffic rail-line?

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      From latest statistics there are around 152 trains each day at this crossing, although it's probably a bit less at the moment as many trains are on revised timetables because of Covid-19.

    I bet the guy in the box keeps on saying to himself: "I'm rushed off my feet with these ruddy trains". Question: How come the barrier, when it's open for traffic becomes closed for trains? Wouldn't it more practical to have an up and down system? After all most trains wouldn't be able to stop in time anyway. A great vid by the way and I'm still pondering why I can't not watch these vids of level crossings.

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks 👍 Gates like these were used for the UK's first level crossings. Some can still be found today, but it's mostly lifting barriers used at level crossings now. A crossing upgrade hasn't occured here yet for some reason. I have quite a large collection of videos, with plenty more still to upload 🙂

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel

      That's just a glitch which happens randomly I believe. You should try moving the barrier model to a different position or avoid the model touching other parts.

    Just a thought, suppose the gate man had a medical collapse in his hut rendering him unconscious!
    Perish the thought, however would this possibly cause a catastrophe?

    • @BigPinkJohn
      @BigPinkJohn ปีที่แล้ว

      No the system is fail safe. The crossing keeper has to remove 2 small keys that are only released once the gates are shut across the road. That removal of the 2 small keys locks the gates. The keys are the put into a machine in the hut that clears the signals. Once in the machine they are only released again once the train has cleared the crossing.

      I did some research into the accident after I'd visited the crossing, and it was apparent that, for the seperate footpath crossing, there use to be miniature warning lights and alarms. It was likely these were ignored as NR had stated they believed the warnings were working correctly. But, as a result, the footpath now has electromagnetic gates, and a massive footbridge has been built. Still very tragic.
