- Have you noticed the size and weight of these newer fifth wheels? With all that space and comfort you need a heavy-duty tow vehicle just to use it! Let's take a look at a new trend in 5th wheel manufacturing... smaller models with less weight to give you more tow options.
The units we showed were the Keystone Sport 2100 RK with a suggested retail of $44,000- www.keystonerv.com/product/co... and the Arcadia Select which is brand new www.keystonerv.com/product/ar...

At 6800 lbs, a 20% pin weight would 1360. That and the weight of a driver will exceed the payload capacity of most half ton pickups. Forget carrying passengers, pets or any gear the the truck. So you still need a heavy duty truck to haul this
I agree. I came to comment just this. I’ve seen these half ton 5th wheels but the math doesn’t add up. Not with a standard 1500. You would need a standard cab long bed with maximum tow packages. That’s not what the common person has.
The problem is that the trailer is lower for the half ton trucks and if you have a HD truck it's too tall for this unit. I just went through this with an alliance trailer. When it was level my stock RAM 3500 was 2 inches too tall to hitch up. 👎
Quite right. And filling the pass through stodage at the front will just add more load on the tongue. I find these manufacturers are often misleading people.
I agree, sales people will say anything to unsuspecting buyers to make a sale. Then their stuck.
Agreed, they are deceptive in saying 1/2 ton, it's a 1/2 not on the lot but one you're going to order and pay more for than a 3/4 or 1 ton in the end. They are unicorn 1/2 never available and not what most people have.
Thank you Jen and Mike! We Love All your videos! Wendy Bowyer is a Great addition to your channel♥
I'm concerned about our society's "trend chasing". It costs people lots of money to chase. Can we just stop and enjoy what we have? But, I do like smaller trailers, rv's etc.
Nicely done video. We’re in a much longer (39’ 2020 Grand Design Momentum 351M, F-450). For those starting out, already owning a smaller truck, they should research the truck’s rear axle pin weight + hitch weight capability for their truck and the maximum combined truck + trailer weight rating before deciding the fifth wheel purchase. Their are YTs on how to do this.
I had the impression you guys were long time RVers, but this video revealed otherwise. 5th wheels were originally this size, and a couple of manufacturers continued to make them throughout. The actual trend was in making them longer, wider and taller! Nice to see a few more makers back to basics providing more options!
I love your channel and will always watch it.
Two experienced news people specializing in the rv industry.
That’s a blessing.
That being said I thought they should have been careful with saying you could tow these new 5th wheels with a half ton.
Guys…. you may be able to do that with a special heavy duty 1/2 ton model.
A model that has a heavy duty suspension, motor and differential throughout.
Do you know the headache and financial burden you can put on an average family by not disclosing this.
Not everyone could just go out and buy another truck because they found out their regular 1/2 ton could be dangerous towing a fifth wheel.
And if this rv salesman doesn’t know this then there’s something wrong.
Please correct me if I’m wrong.
Many families run into these towing problems because they are new to towing. They stretch the truth.
You need power and stability when towing anything!
You forgot that slide in will prevent use of the stove and access to the bathroom and bedroom. Also watching that TV near the ceiling is like going to a theater and sitting in the front row to watch a movie. Who wants to do that?
Dump the sofa and replace it with theatre seats and it's perfect. Great video.
I'd dump the dinette and put theatre seats and eat off trays!
I'd dump both the dinete and sofa so that I can either eat outside, or in fordable chair + tables (I carry anyway) in the space inside in case of rain. haha @@RIPolos
Great review- thanks- we will have to give them a look
Great video. Thank you!
I love the setup of this rig… convenient and spacious. Nice review !!
Our previous RV was a Cougar 5th wheel. About 28 feet long, one slide out. We loved it and I miss it! Glad they are available again because we like small. I don’t care for the rear kitchen. Ours had a big window out the back, two lounge chairs, a couch and a dinette. Much better layout, IMO. Also I hope they make them under 12 feet, so they fit in a 12 foot garage door, which we have. Someday…
looks great- i’ve wondered why this has not been done before?
weight is relevant to it’s sturdiness? how much tradeoff is there ?
i’m sad to note mike looks heavier… enjoying life or something wrong?
tytyty for your videos
Friend and I, travel with 30 ft travel..works for us. Pull w/ 1/2 t. Wasn't putting down 60 + on a 3/4 or 1 t ..would like to try a slid in..
Comment we have a 2010 keystone has all the features described but a lot more glass to view outside. They have been making them a long time in that size . Nothing new here. What happens if because it is lighter keystone puts smaller axles. Two 3500 lb axles for an 8200 lb trailer empty weight. This puts a heavy load on the truck. Ad your gear and water and you are overweight for the axles. They need 6 or 7000 lb axles. You can order that when you buy.
The slide when in travel mode blocks the bed room / bedroom... 👎
Nice to see the trend of slightly smaller and slightly lower 5th wheels that are still well equipped. We do a lot of state, provincial, municipal and federal parks that often have smaller camp sites that the big rigs just cannot get into easily. A rig like this can just get to so many places. As always safe travels.....
I've got a 21 ft motorhome for more freedom. . The longer the rig the less the freedom.
Didn't take long for the weight police to arrive on the scene. These are definitely towable by half ton trucks, and folks are doing it every single day. My main comment would be that this isn't really new. Cougar has offered the HT series for at least 10 years. We have a 276xx model, which is 28'-9" OAL, and it was not the shortest available at the time. They had a 244xx that was shorter. Ours is a 2011 model, so over a dozen years old. We love it, but there are compromises of course, as there are with anything. A big one that I don't see mentioned very often is that you cannot hitch these up with the tailgate down. The TG will hit the front of the basement, because the overhang is shorter than with larger trailers. So you have to backup the truck so that the pinbox is in front of the TG, then get out and close the TG, then backup further to engage the pin. Not too big of a complaint really, just something to know so you don't damage your new trailer. I get around this by using a Vee style TG and can do the whole thing with the TG closed.
What’s the CCC for these units?
About 1600 lbs.
Lighter means crappier build
I like the size but I still would not tow this with a half ton.
Not in the mountains!!
i'm sure this rig is great for someone, but really needs a 3/4+ ton truck not a 1/2 ton... very basic beginner unit.. they'll outgrow this unit and trade up in no time...
No need for sofa. Couple's want recliners.
Slide in blocks the bedroom and bath. Fatal design flaw.
that is true. This is not the first time I saw such bad design. Just wonderful what the reason designer make it that way.
Designers are not RV users.@@kevingzhang
Nobody has died. You just open the slide out.
Near Residential refrigerator?? Why not just say apartment size. Once you load this thing up with beverages and food and clothing your probably going to need a bigger truck.
If the trend is to go smaller than why not just get a class c where you don't need a truck and when it's raining you don't have to go outside in order to use the restroom? If people really want to go smaller get a 21ft class b. Yes its smaller, so maybe a class c perhaps.
Teeny tiny
3:25 - who the hell put electric switches or control panels RIGHT next to sink where you wash you hands!!!! They will be splattered with water!!!
Considering also that smaller trucks are going EV, too. People want EV for their every day vehicle and still go camping on the weekends. This smaller 5th wheel would be great for that.
Poor design considering the one slide blocks you from everything except the kitchen sink.
