This group is blessed with 'pairs' of singers who can cover each other's vocal ranges, thus allowing all the things you mentioned. Avi can do a fairly high baritone if needed, but can drop and break speakers. Scott is a baritone, but has about a four octave range, so he can blend/cover with most of the others. Kirstin is a golden voiced Metzo, who can put incredible power into her voice. Mitch is, well, Mitch. who can do a great tenor voice when needed, but otherwise we don't know the TOP of his vocal range. And Kevin is the 'beat-boxer's Beatboxer', plays cello and sax, and has a beautiful tenor voice that melts your heart. And all combined with incredible arranging and video skills, and a 'group thinking' that has them all working to be better together than they are individually!
I love the "Mitch is, well, Mitch." - as abstract as it sounds, that is so spot on. esp. with their fresh 90 dance medley he really starts going towards a synthetic existence. :D
Mitch has one of the most incredible voices I have ever heard. A few years ago I saw an interview with Pentatonix and they were asked who was the best singer in the group and everyone pointed at Mitch.
I’m not sure if I’m 100% correct but I don’t think Avi did it there. There’s actually bass line too if you use a headphone. His bass line is hitting every first and third beat along with Kevin’s drum hit which makes it blends incredibly well. Also in live performances Kevin did all these percussions too so I think it’s just Kevin.

PTX does this wonderfully and it is full of ear candy. But it does definitely come across sort of technically. The Voctave performance, by contrast, is still full of ear candy but comes across more emotionally, mainly because of the delivery by guest artist Mark Lowry, who is the actual lyricist of this song. Mark also delivers two instances of his patented long-held notes, which are a staple of singers in the Southern Gospel genre. It's very worth checking out.
@@John_Malloy Heh. They get quite a bit more publicity, plus I think the PTX video may have been out longer. That's why I'm trying to boost the signal (although truth be told, I try to do that with all the acappella groups, including collegiate and barbershop. The latter two have a bigger noise-to-signal ratio, but the top groups are VERY good and deserving of a bigger audience)

Fun fact, this song was written by a guy named Mark Lowry back in the '80s. He was a comedian at the time, who also did some songs. This was, by far, the best thing he ever did. He eventually went on to join the Gaither Vocal Band because he was a decent singer. The song, on the other hand, was covered by lots of people and became a standard. Having heard this song by Mark when he was still a comedian, seeing Pentatonix cover it so many years later (and one of their break-out hits) made me smile. It is a great song, and they are great performers. edit: I am no longer a Christian, but this song can still move me to tears because of the emotion in the writing. No matter who performs it, I give that to Mark. Everyone has their own moment in the sun, this was his, and he deserves it.

I like Voctave's version, but you are wrong. The song was written by Mark Lowry in 1984, the music was written by Buddy Greene in 1991, and it was originally recorded by Michael English in 1991. Now of these people are members of Voctave.
I believe they are referring to the video they did WITH Mark Lowery as the soloist. He isn’t a member of the group but performed with them and it is truly special.

Fabulous work pointing out the nuances of the performance by my favorite group.
One thing I find hard is that Kirstin and Mitch have such similar ranges, and they also can produce tones with similar color and timbre, so it can be a bit hard sometimes to determine which one is singing on top and which one is lower.
They do a cool version of "you're a mean one mr grinch" where Matt the new bass guy sings it. They don't go to far off the original but a really fun tune.

New Patron!! And my take on the end: The build before the ending i feel is meant to give a false sense of the song continuing after it abruptly ends. Essentially like a false resolve to draw the listener back into intimacy. it psychologically makes you desire to hear more. Pop artists do this all of time. Similarly to how we naturally want to hear a resolve on the 1maj of the key to pop song, but at the last second they go to a 4maj or 5min. Its very similar.

Pentatonix “amazing grace” !! X
I think the impact of Kevin's sudden, sweet, clear little solo line was amazing. I was really looking forward to seeing you react to that. When you're used to his expert percussion and expect that to be his sole contribution, it really floors you to hear that pure, heartfelt tone come out of him from nowhere. This is the best version of this song.
his voice is so pure and innocent, truly an angel
You should do the voctave version with mark lowrey, who actually wrote this. hands down one of the best
Also a wonderful version.
It's such an incredibly impressive performance from a technical standpoint, and I'm sure a professional like Elizabeth will appreciate their expertise.
I second this. I actually think that I prefer that one. Then again, Voctave has a LOT of really good christmas songs.
I've seen them in person and their sound is just as full and rich in person.
I love Pentatonix and Mary Did You Know. I also love Voctave and their version of Mary Did You Know with Mark Lowry (the writer of the song). I would love for you to review their version as well! Hope all is well and you have a great Holiday Season.
I was thinking exactly the same .. another approach than with Pentatonix and both absolutely worth to be explored and closely been listened to. th-cam.com/video/uaRpeMT1tjQ/w-d-xo.html
@@thorstenmatadoerle8546 Thank you, this is one of my favorite song ever and I never heard about Voctave... I literally cry... Sometimes I found the vocalist to loud comparing to Mark, but after all, I prefer Voctave version... Just wow! The long note of Mark and the soprano girl is just insane! Thank you!

@@XxKidnoffxX Voctave is a rabbithole everybody should fall down at some point. And yes, Kate (that really high, crystal clear soprano) is insane. They all are really, really good and many of them have been, or are still, members of the Voices of Liberty in Epcot Disney World in Florida, which is their main job.
Yes you absolutely should do Voctave’s version of this song. So good
My son is a senior in high school and is a musical theatre specialist and vocalist. He recently was accepted to the Manhattan School of Music and is awaiting audition results from multiple other schools, and he loves to watch you and apply your notes to his own growth as a musician. So thank you!!
Love your reactions and breakdowns of the videos. I can't wait for this one!!
I love that "Woosh" at the end, how it stopped the music. It was great to hear Kevin, what a treat! I had 7 years of Choral vocal training (40+ years ago) by whom I consider THE best coach I could have had! I had a very close relationship with her since I had the highest 1st Soprano voice and the most powerful voice in our 46 person choir and she groomed that in me. We spent many hours just the 2 of us. I had a 2 octave voice range. You remind me so much of her! Your enthusiasm, knowledge and love of music brings back so many wonderful memories of her for me. I feel as if I'm back in my favorite class, with my favorite teacher, and still learning!! THANK YOU so much for that!! I had many Acapella solos in Choral Concerts plus in State and National contests and still love it. Pentatonix is my favorite group for that.
It honestly wouldn't surprise me if they didn't double the voices during those "thick sounding" moments. Avi's bass makes those 5 voices like a full wall of sound when they harmonize. Its remarkable.
When I hear that song it gives me chills. Great song.
My favourite part of this video is your reaction to Kevin's solo. Like yeah, I can relate.
Your delight in the performance is delightful, and catching. It's as much fun watching the delight on your face and in your expressions as it is listening to the performance!
Hello lovely fans! If you're enjoying my reaction & analysis videos and learning more about music, I recommend checking out my Music Appreciation Course! This course deep dives into time signatures, tempo, pitch, dynamics, key, music production, and most of all, vocal registers! I guarantee it will make your music listening experience that much better. You can find the course on my website here: thecharismaticvoice.com/music-appreciation/
You need to go see them in person! There is no additional anything!
Love your reaction videos:) please check out lonesome road with Tim Storms
I love to watch your synaptic impulses express themselves in your eyes and facial expressions as you listen. Makes me enjoy the sounds.
Why does she remind me of my 5th grade teacher when she let us watch a movie but made us write notes at the same time
PTX does this wonderfully and it is full of ear candy.
Agree with your comment but the PTX vid has more views by a couple of hundred million.
I love Christmas Songs. 🎄The live Version of ' Silent Night' by Pentatonix is really beautiful too. Greetings from Germany
I really wish she'll react to that one, It's mesmerising!
This is by far my favorite Pentatonix song... and shows their versatility. Thanks for the reaction... I'm sure that's what my face looked like the first time I heard it. ;-)
I'm really glad I subbed to you, you're one of my favorite music TEACHERS on TH-cam, your excitement for the subject is palpable and you teach with such care for both the subject and your audience, so thank you for these!! And I LOVE this reaction and this song!!
This is an acapella masterpiece imo.
Definitely the best song they made
Please do some Voctave! Their Christmas music is fantastic! O Holy Night, Joy to the World, O Come All Ye Faithful, Mary Did You Know, and O Come/First Noel/I Wonder are all fantastic!
I think their version of _O Come, All Ye Faithful_ is my current favorite Christmas song...
Gotta love it when a singer holds a note so long his face starts twitching! haha.
th-cam.com/video/CljN1YIxHiI/w-d-xo.html
Don't forget Carol of the bells of Notre Dame!
Pentatonix is one of my favorite groups and I had the distinct pleasure of meeting and talking to Kevin when the group was in Louisville, Kentucky two years ago.
Wonderful reaction. You always give a very detailed view of the song you are listening to which I appreciate. (The retired teacher is still learning from you.) You also show your reactions through your expressions which is also fun to watch.
Hah! Well, I'm still learning every day too. ;-)
You should react to Voctave version off (Mary,Did You Know)Their voices is so angelic!!.also, their lead singer is the real singer and songwritter off this song!! Check it out!!!
Yeah, I've seen that one. It is real good. But I like PTX's version better.
Yes! I love Pentatonix but Voctave's covers of "Mary Did You Know" and "O Come All Ye Faithful" are the most amazing covers of these songs.
I totally agree with you. This version has more views by orders of magnitude but you never know if YT is screwing with the numbers.
I absolutely love your enthusiasm,Kirsty is a beautiful young Lady with a voice out of this world.Pentatonix is an amazing group,I've seen a lot of their music, outstanding.Elizabeth keep up the great reactions.
I am a massive fan of Avi Kaplan and his bass! Would love to see you do a reaction to his new solo stuff!
Absolutely, especially "Change On The Rise". Just beautiful...
Full Moon would be a great one for her😀
Another thing that is amazing is Elizabeth can hear so many aspects of what she analyzes. She always points out the abilities of the artist(s) but lost in the analysis is her volume of work and her professionalism. Thank you, Elizabeth.
your face when you hear Avi sing is so accurate, the right reaction to his glorious voice
Ooo’s are like a scent trail that catches your nose making you curious to find the source. Love this song.
I asked for this. Thank you. I knew you’d like it.
I love how into music you are. You have such a great physical reaction to good music. It’s easy to see that you love music.
Thanks youtube. sometimes you DO get gems like this recommended. subbed! :)
I have watched a number of reaction videos but I find yours outstanding. I have loved music all of my life but you still manage to teach me so much with your detailing of specific aspects and highlights of the performance.
The look of joy and enthusiasm on your face is absolutely amazing. I love your reactions keep it up.
They do a cool version of "you're a mean one mr grinch" where Matt the new bass guy sings it. They don't go to far off the original but a really fun tune.
Like every time I hear this all I do is smile cry... it’s so beautiful
4:45 you have impeccable pausing skills.
I envy people who have the ability to analyse the minutiae of the performance to make sense of the performance as a whole. Thanks for sharing that with us. Your sheer enjoyment of the music is infectious. Thanks for posting.
You should check out Peter Hollens "Black is the color of my true love's hair" featuring Avi, cause it's amazing!
I wish everyone could feel the power of sound the way your expressions show how you experience sound.
Notice the "Halo" effect from the mouth of the cave around Kirstin when she was singing "Mary did you know..."?
This lady is such a joy to watch enjoying music

New Patron!! And my take on the end:
The build before the ending i feel is meant to give a false sense of the song continuing after it abruptly ends.
I get goosebumps every time I listen to this song
All reactors get that look Kevin gets to shine in his solo.
You're so much fun to watch.
Thank you Paul!
David Phelps O Holy Night is a great one !
That whoosh is one of Kevin's standard tricks. It sounds like a reverse cymbal crash and often integrates right into a bass drum kick. I really do enjoy how much you still enjoy the music even while analyzing it.
Omg the thumbnail for this one 😆
I know, right?!
This is by far my favorite Pentatonix song. It's one of my faves anyway, but spotlighting them all so beautifully, the harmony is incredible, Mitch gets to Mitch, and Kevin my God man what a voice.
8:36 - most adorable reaction on TH-cam to date.
I counter with this one (watch for about 40 seconds to get the full reaction):
th-cam.com/video/hT31aomJhhQ/w-d-xo.html
Elizabeths videos are full of these moments, though, so it's hard to single one out as "the best". :)
I find it amazing that Scott, Kirstin and Mitch all went to the same high school.. Soo much talent in the same place... :-)
Voctave’s version of Carol of the Bells is amazing, I think you’d love it
I haven't heard Voctave's one but I love the version by Pentatonix.
i always get chills on the build up of "The Great I Am" part
