Vintage G.I.Joe Tomax & Xamot custom Sky Hook - Toy Polloi

  • The G.I.Joe figures are great but when it comes to Tomax & Xamot I think their Sky Hook is a bit underwhelming and can be improved. So today I set about making my own custom version using a few pieces of Lego and some styrene sheet to make a fully working Sky Hook with a pulley that can rotate.

    I just got an idea for a possible improvement:
    If you cut a styrene rod to length and stick it on the bottom of the pulley system downward and stick a couple of pegged footrests made of styrene sheet and rods at the bottom of that central rod, Tomax and Xamot can stand on the footrests while hanging onto the T-bar. Then it won't look like they're wearing their shoulders out trying to hang on to the T-bar. Maybe it isn't toy accurate (or even show accurate, really) but it'll look like the ride is more comfortable for the twins.
    I hope I explained that clearly enough. I'm not all that good with words.

    I always like to imagine the Toy Story effect and think of how much they would of been enjoying flying down at such a high speed and loving it. Great to see it in action.

    Tomax and Xamot hold a special place with me. My older sister and I took the bus to Toys R Us and she bought them for me for my birthday. Core memory. So thank you for fixing up the boys. 🥰

    You could cut Down the Big Block to just have enough space for the pinholes, Would make it even more elegant.

    This is so much better than the one that came with the figures, which was just one piece of plastic. A case where the recreation is superior to the original!

      Thanks. I just wanted one that worked properly to get maximum speed out of them.

    Excellent work! I'd have used plastic weld to fix the T-bar to the pulley assembly - the LEGO parts are made of ABS plastic, which plastic weld will bond extremely well to styrene - a far stronger and more forgiving bond than CA ever could provide. It's also waterproof, and CA glue denatures if it gets wet (which is why it's a bad idea to fix cups and plates with it).

    • @toypolloi
      @toypolloi  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would disagree myself as I find Lego often doesn't bond well with styrene when using plastic weld. It's easily broken.

    Hey Buddy,
    Growing up I did have these two figures growing up and I received them for my 8th birthday. I had a lot fun with these figures and I loved putting them on ferret.
    But you brought back a memory for me I completely forgot about till you showed your first attempt with sky hook. My father made something similar to yours but he included a net for carrying stuff like the ferret. So I had hours of adventures. Anyway I like lego one you made such great idea I might make something similar for idea I have.

    Great video! Although I remember playing with most of my childhood Joes, I don't remember unpackaging very many. Tomax and Xamot are the exception. I thought their mirrored packaging was awesome, and I can still remember freeing them from their cardback.

    Hey Dave
    Fantastic addition to your collection, I really enjoy seeing you outside playing with the toys you fix or upgrade. I like the new transition editing to the next shot.
    Only a thought here, perhaps add to the spelling of Toy Polloi; "That is correct." I hope both you and MrsTP have a great weekend, as well as; Take care of one Another😊

    I don’t know how well that super glued handle bar is going to hold up to repeated zipline runs as well as the thumbs on those figures which are notorious for breaking due to rugged play.

    • @toypolloi
      @toypolloi  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think the thumbs will break before the glue.

    I never had those figures, but I remember making similar ziplines and grappling hooks and (totally rubbish) parachutes for my GI Joes. Great fun, and great video. Also, I noticed that your list of TH-cam members has grown to two pages now! Love to see it.

    Greetings! I love your channel and always look forward to your latest installment. I have a question unrelated to this video. I have a vintage 1974 Mego Robin action figure. It was mint on card, but the left leg knee pin failed and the lower leg fell off. I had to carefully remove it from the card to fix. I purchased a parts Robin to get an original knee pin, and then noticed the right forearm had a crack under the glove. The hand fell out and the forearm crack broke the arm completely. Now I need to replace the right forearm. Can you please advise how to do this? Many thanks in advance. -Edward

      @toypolloi  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, I would just find a replacement arm and swap the whole thing out. It's easy enough to find broken Mego dolls. And I have many videos on them showing how to fix them. Cheers

    Dave, I think you'll find his name is pronounced ZAY-mot instead of ZA-mot.
    Now you know; and knowing is half the battle.

    • @decadentdave

      It’s just Tomax backwards. You don’t call him To-MAYZ. Maybe the cartoon pronounced it that way. Tomato Tomatoe.

    You just gave me an Idea. I do have the hook part. Maybe I might add some milliputty on the ends so that they won't slide off. Just modify the original one a bit.
