Sewing Machine = Brother SQ9185 purchased from Walmart.com.
New Look 6176 Size 8
Cost per garment (size 8 on the pattern) is rounded up to the nearest higher $0.50.
Dress outer fabric = 1.5 yards of camouflage wool knit from moodfabrics.com (Gray and Black Camouflage Wool Knit) at $24.99/yard.
Lining = 2 yards of China silk from Mood Designer Fabrics from the garment district of New York City at $7/yard.
Zipper = $1.
Total cost of garment = $52.5

Okay ... I admit that I had to watch it several times where the magic happened, the magic being where you sewed the cuff. I've never seen this method before. When I saw you hold up the dress and I saw 'the mess' I nearly flipped. When, when you shook the dress I began to understand what had happened ... I'm not very quick.

It depends on the fabric - if it is prone to fraying, then yes. If not, it is optional if you have a reasonable amount of seam allowance (I use 5/8” or 1.5 cm) though I always serge/overlock the skirt hem just to be safe. 😃

If you have a pinking shear, it works great for finishing the edges of delicate fabrics. 😀

Now I'm planning to use pinking shears for the raw edges except the skirt part that is not attached to the shell (for that I'll use the flat felt seam because it stays flat and try to use french seam for the skirt part of the shell.. i hope it works!)

Hi ZBE, China silk is 100% silk. Generally quite thin and used as a lining material. Here is what moodfabrics.com (where I purchase most of my fabrics from) says on this fabric -- “China Silk Fabric is originally referred to as Silk Habotai meaning “soft as down” in Japanese, but it is commonly referred to as China silk due to majority of its production being done in China. Available in many weights, this high quality fabric can be used for linings and lingerie as well as summer blouses and bedding. Due to its characteristic plain weave, China Silk is incredibly sleek and has a hand that is most identified as silk. Ideal for beginner sewers due to its smooth surface.” Thanks and stay safe!!!

I keep getting confused at the sleeve part, I can’t tell which part is folded over and to where? same with the lining. I’m not sure how they touch… the main fabric looks super similar on the wrong side, so it blends in. then I’m not sure how you attached it at the very end… do you have any still photos of this? Or any drawing? Just to aide in the explanation…. Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you!

For the outer fabric, I used the blind hem foot of my machine. For the lining, I just folded it over twice and sewed it down with a straight stitch. Thanks! 😁

Hi Robin - if you overlap the seam allowance of both the neckband piece and the dress pattern piece, you will get a simple shift dress without the neckband! I then traced out the pattern this way for my lining. 😁
