From a guy whos owned two speed3's, NO NO NO NO NO that engine is not reliable. The mazda L series is known for one thing, burning a shitload of oil. I had a gen1 that burned a quart every 2 weeks, did that the entire time I had it and could have easily cost me a turbo/engine if I wasnt as good at maintenance. Got a newer gen2 that I thought would be "the build", it started burning a quart every two weeks, but then progressed to a quart every week, then a quart every 4 days, then I heard the timing chain rattling. Then my nephew picks up a '13 mazda3 with the 2.0 and its burning a quart every 2 weeks, I told him its how all the engines are. Someone in town bought my old car from the dealer, but I don't see it driving around anymore, I'm pretty sure it blew up on him from no oil. My 40 year old 12A rotary burns less oil even when premixing.
These aren’t rlly sport cars imo. The Toyota Avalon makes over 300hp stock lol and no one sees it as a sports car. Yeah there’s more than just raw power but it has a decent 0-60 and some decent handling aswell

I think it’s more about finding the right one and the right year! Since they’re fairly old now, you want to make sure you find one that was kept well. But definitely look for what the weak spots are for each year!
