Stop getting mad about something useless.
European countries were the first Latin countries.
Believe it or not French, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian, come from latin making them Latin languages. And their speakers are Latinos.
People who live in South America, you speak Spanish, French and Portuguese.
Where did that languages come from? OMG they come from Europe! And they also come from Latin cause they are still the same Spanish, Portuguese and French- with some local variations.

I still, to this day, do not understand the usage of the word "latino/a", which stemmed from the USA (as always) a country that always labels others while at the same time it isn't able to label their people properly (couldn't come up with a better word than Americans, as if they were the only country in America, which is a freaking continent). Apart from this, the word "latino" comes from ancient Latin. The LANGUAGE. That is why we have latin-based or romance languages, which directly derive from Latin. Among them, the "Sardo" which is a language spoken in the island of Sardinia, Italy (where people speak Sardo and Italian) is considered the closest to the Latin language. Now, why do you label people from South America "latinos"? Definitely because it stems from an abbreviation of "Latin America" and why do you call it Latin America in the first place? To indicate an area where most people (the vast majority) speak latin-based languages, like Spanish and Portuguese, which is different from other parts of America. Mexico is still considered Latin America of course, since Mexicans speak spanish. The issue is that I have personally lived in south america, and I speak fluent Spanish, and I never ever heard anyone actually referring to themselves as "latino". I lived in Argentina and people would say "Soy argentino/a". Same with Colombia and many other countries. That leads me to believe that people from Latin America use the label "latino" only when they speak English, since, again, the connotation given to it didn't exist before the US started using the word (and at the beginning it was definitely not a very positive label...). Thus can you really say the word latino can actually represent latin american people? Im very curious. And since I am Italian, and I speak what is probably the closest language to ancient Latin, am I a Latina? Doesn't make any sense to me.

It's confusing really, but as a brazilian (and latina) i'll try to explain how i view it:
the word "latino/a" tends to be used in a derrogatory way by U.S. people especially because of the immigrants (especially mexicans and central americans) and because they tend to see their own country as the whole continent America (calling themselves "Americans" but not accepting anyone else from the Americas to be considered "American" though it's literally the continet's name, as you said) but it IS actually used by non-USA people/people from Central and South America to refer to the countries in the continent that speak latin languages, both in academic and (some) everyday life contexts.
The most important thing is: it's not only about language (that's why people from european countries that speak latin languages CANNOT be considered latinos or latinas). The term "Latin America" is used to separete the latin-speaking countries from the english-speaking countries because of the HUGE differences in history and culture, most of it due to colonization. Brazil was colonized by Portugal and most other latin countries were colonized by Spain, but the way things went down, how it shaped the cultures of theses countries, it's all very similar. All the problems (be it social, political, economic, etc) latin-american countries face to this day are similar. That's way we can put them in the same "category" as "latin countries". (there's even i joke that latin amarica is just a whole country itself because all the countries and their culture are so similar)
And the experience you shared about living in South America and never hearing anyone calling themselves latin is, in my opinion, due to the fact that being latin is part of who we are, we (most of us, at least) grow up knowing what is latin america, why there's this separation, so we all know that being from this countries automatically makes us latin, so when we are there there's no need to say "i'm latin", we already know that, it's implied in the nationality. But then when we go to countries outside Latin America, it's more common to say that you're latin because it's a way of stating not only your origin (especially because not everyone knows where every country is, and it helps locating which continent you're from), but all the background you have and showing how you're proud of all that even when(or if) people have negative views about latin countries and people.
      (sorry for the long text)

How do you make such claims without a short googling? Latin-ameirca is not an US therm, nor the therm latino-americano was first used by US.
Aside from that, the same goes to you, do you go around calling yourself european when in Italy? Someone from Naples will probably call himself first napolitano, then italiano and just in certain contexts, europeo.
Aside from that, it doesn't matter were the therm comes from, what does matter is what we do with them.
      You want more?
in 76 Belchio sang "Apenas um rapaz latino-americano". In 73 Ney Matogrosso sang Sangue Latino. In 71 Galeano wrote the seminal Las venas abiertas de América Latina. Just because your first contact with the therm came from an racist US mouth, it doesn't mean it originated there, it doesn't even make sense to think that the would use an spanniard therm for that.

A curiosity is that by American law Brazilians were excluded from the Latino public, this even affects some demands because we are not represented there as part of this population, it was for an error of definition but that at the time supplied the majority who were Latinos who spoke Spanish so it turned out that those who did not speak fou nor was of Hispanic origin was left out, but that's just how it's seen by U.S. law, not reality.
      Actually, I think it was more for a census, but it would help, for example, in how the government would apply the social demand, so for example, a Brazilian in a company could not declare himself Latino in theory;

Yes, Spain is European, and it is also considered a Latin country. Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, and Romania are Latin countries because their languages and cultures originated from Latin in Ancient Rome. These countries are part of the Latin heritage due to their Romance languages, which evolved from Latin. Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian are all examples of Romance languages derived from Latin. On the other hand, the other girls are also Latinas because they speak Spanish (a Romance language), but they are specifically Latin Americans because they are from South America.
