    I come from an asian family and of course as a young asian girl (20) it’s expected to be petite and feminine. I’ve always been on the chunkier side just because I’m short I look a little heavier than others even though I’m not necessarily overweight. I gained some extra weight last year and did not hear the end of it from my family so I joined the gym after years of avoiding being fit due to laziness. Anyway, I slowly managed to come up with my own training style and got into weightlifting. For a girl who’s 4’8 I lift pretty heavy, and have found it to really help with not only my health, but my happiness and self esteem. During this process I of course implemented HIIT cardio on top of my weightlifting and while results aren’t too drastic I’ve lost about 4kg over the past couple months. I’m now sitting at 55kg and my family still considers me big, I get told because I’m 4’8 I should be eating half the adult daily intake and should weigh 42kg to look “normal”. My sister constantly tells me to stop lifting bc she sees me gaining muscle and is scared of me looking “manly” and to be honest it makes me sad. I’ve found something that’s made me so happy, I’m doing it for me and no one else. I’m deciding to dedicate my life to healthy eating and weightlifting because it makes me happy and is what I feel is benefiting me so much. It’s taken me years to overcome my body issues and to try and love myself. I will always love my family but the gym especially has taught me no one’s opinion will matter but my own, especially about MY body and MY health. Thanks for these videos meg, I really appreciate you trying to share your knowledge and help others with their fitness journey :)
    P.s your deadlift tutorial helped me a lot with my form! I love you hehe xx

    Also another thing for #7. If you really feel someone is in danger of hurting themselves because of form or whatever, you can always let one of the gym’s hired coaches know and they can go and tell them... seeing that they are certified and it might come better from them than you.

      Like when I see people almost snapping their back when doing a deadlift with an arched af form. That literally scares the shit out of me. I have to say something for their own safety and my own sanity. I guess telling staff will come off better.

    This made me feel so much better knowing I'm not alone on receiving unsolicited advice. I'm a female disabled combat vet, going to the gym makes me very anxious as it is, every day I struggle (social anxiety) but I still go. Today this guy came up to me to "correct" me on something that he had no clue about. The idea of feeling like I'm being watched was unnerving, so much so I couldn't handle it and had to leave. Thank you for recommending against doing this.

    I'm so happy when people come up to me and correct me on my form. I would much rather people tell me if I am doing something wrong so I can improve but it is all about how you do it. One guy came up to me and said hey, I can see you're struggling, try this out and experiment with this etc. And it was such a helpful and gentle way to help. I have improved on my squat in the last week weight wise after that and am so happy

  • @franug
    @franug 5 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    The unsolicited advice one is great! Multiple times I've been tempted to approach someone to tell them they're doing something wrong but I almost never do, because I know from experience how uncomfortable and almost humilliating it can be! The only time I remember doing it was when one of the coaches at my gym approached this teenage girl who was doing goblet squats really wrong, and it turned out she actually didn't know what she was doing. Because I was working out next to her (and had noticed her form), I suuuper politely showed her how to do it right and she was thankful, albeit shy. But it is a super creepy thing to do most times

      Really hard to understand to me being autistic. I love information and if the advice it's useful the unsolicited advice is super welcomed as it is a person talking about things that help my routine instead of talking to me directly, also don't find it rude because boundaries duh. I find this human interaction incredibly more appealing than others. People who give advice should have a radar for autism.

      I think its the difference between a trained professional whos job is it to help the people at the gym vs some random person that you didnt know was watching you. This is certainly a situation with aspects that not everyone will agree with because doing exercises with bad form can be dangerous

    #7 needs to be shouted from the rooftops!! I’ve had people come up to me in the gym and tell me i have lumbar lordosis. I loved your #7 about unsolicited advice. It's so true, we don't know what the person is working on or what their limitations are. And yes totally agree that it can be so hard to get to the gym for some people. Even for me, someone whose been going a long time, sometimes it feels stressful to be there. I agree with your suggestion of befriending those people, I've found that the friends I've made have come to trust me enough to disclose their limitations to me so I've been able to give them advice and suggestions to modify movements safely. I think it's also good to keep in mind that sometimes people feel discouraged when they have to modify movements to accommodate their physical limitations. Pointing that stuff out to people can really make them feel bad. I think it's really important to encourage each other as much as possible. Even just a smile or a nod at someone can make someone feel good (I like high fives lol). What matters is that we're all there to work hard, no matter what our level is :)

    For many reasons! This is why it is so easy for me to go to the gym.
    1. It balances me mentally.
    2. I find the exhaustion after a good lift session calms my body. Gets rid of any anxious/excess energy.
    3. Keeps me strong. I’m 48 and I’m stronger than I’ve ever been. It makes everything easier.
    4. No matter what kind of day I’m having, I always feel accomplished after I go to the gym.
    5. Hormonal balance
    6. Weight control
    7. Reshaping my body
    8. Hot dudes

    I absolutely love how informative this video is. After watching this I think my biggest weakness is not putting enough emphasis on working off of a 1 rep max. I typically go in with the workout planned, but I don't try to figure out the weights until I get there and see how my body is feeling...I also don't tend to keep track of the weights I used the previous week🤦‍♀️

    This was a great video; food for thought (there I go again w/food on the brain, as usual). I joined strong strong friends, a little over a month ago, and it was the perfect fit & push for me (I have experience in the gym, lifting heavy especially, but it has been over 10 years since I really worked a good program & regularly). You have made it fun! And I feel challenged, and can’t wait to go to the gym, for the next workout. Good video. I’m a reformed gym rat. I don’t feel like doing that again. I tell people who are beginning to go to the gym and do anything, just go. Pull-ups are fabulous. After a few weeks, you’ll see some results and the enthusiasm will kick in. Personally, I can go bench press the bar with no shame (I’m a former 300+ bench press). I’m not trying to impress anyone so I don’t do the progressive weight method. That’s good for some people but if you’re just trying to stay fit, it’s not necessary. I love your videos, great advice.

    The other day I saw someone barbell curl and it hung in the air completely isymmetrically. I did approach him, said Hi and told him I did notice that when I walked by, but of course if that was on purpose, they should please ignore me and I wish them a good workout. The guy was actually pretty thankful, because he didn't realize his "stronger" arm was doing all the work and switched to a spot with a mirror. So I guess that was okay to do? Otherwise I keep quiet.
    When I see someone where I honestly think they might be risking injury, I quietly ask some gym staff if they think they should say something and leave it to them.

    #7 is so important. I have scoliosis and my right shoulder blade looks kind of weird. some people, especially guys, come up to me and tell me my form is off, for example on my overhead press. This pisses me off every single time. I got it all figured out with my doctor and physical therapist and don't need this gym bro advice

    I want to work out to be strong and healthy. Why? Because I've seen the progression of horrible diseases and low quality of life (mental and physical) in my older relatives and I fear ending up that way. So it's really an existential crisis and a fear of death that drives me. Yay! Or did I go too deep with the "why" questions? lol... oh and I want to tell you you're one of the prettiest ladies on the planet and you should be super confident on the beach or anywhere.

    Hey Strong Strong coach! Could you do a video on how to make a strenght program or modify a template yourself? I get overwhelmed with the idea that I might not be doing it right, whether is a combination of eating, sleeping and new moves or not having the physical book/plan (like if its on my phone or something, or i have notes) in front of me. I think all we need is exposure and gain the confidence, but is there anything you SHOULDN'T be doing or including?

  • @hafusan

    Non-native here, I have a question:
    15:09 "asking for a spot" in the gym, does this mean asking for assistance/backup with the weights?
    tbh I would love to get advice for my form and where I am lacking as I am a total novice and have never done "strength sports".
    Would that be weird? I am also a young woman and most people in my gym are muscle bros... But sometimes there are other women, too! Is it weird to ask them for advice on an exercise I see them do too in a good form?

    • @samevans1289
      @samevans1289 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, someone spotting you means they're there to tell you if you're losing your form or if your form is incorrect and how to adjust it, and to help you with the weights in case they prove too much for you and you risk dropping them and hurting yourself. :)
      As for the other question, I don't know😅 I'm not sure about gym etiquette-maybe take a chance once and see how they react. If not, just ask the gym's trainers, they will help you for sure.

    Okay so I wanted to do the Why thing :)
    Why I go to the gym ? Because I want more muscles and strength
    Why ? To feel beautiful and strong
    Why ? Because I wanna be more confident
    Why ? To be more positive in my life and less anxious about everything
    Why ? Because I wanna be successful and happy !
    Is that how it's intended to be ? :D
    I feel so good now I actually wrote all of it into words !

    • @Megsquats
      @Megsquats  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      yes!! we could perhaps go even deeper:
      why do you want to be successful and happy?
      possible A: because I want to create a better life for my loved ones and enjoy and extend the time I have here on planet earth!

    Hiya. Do you have any tips for someone starting out with gym and/or crossfit when you have a well recovered injury (4 years down the track)... in my case... a metal rod in my femur? Plus also new at fitness in general!! I've scaled right back or weened out what doesn't suit my body in crossfit ... such as box jumps and sadly even a brief jog due to the mild impact : Z I swap the runs out for the bike or rower and more fluid moving things... as I've found I can push with my legs fine... so will do an incline walk/jog on a treadmill with less irritation to my joints for example. Obviously common sense is a must haha... listen to your body... strengthen weak areas nice and slowly etc. Anything I might be missing? : ) Couldn't find anything mush on the subject apart from recovering from recent injuries. So how to continue to progress/not get too frustrated with what you're working with when there are going to be remaining restrictions? Thanks : )

    Why do I want to get fit? - to be healthier. Why do I want to be healthier? Because I'm currently in pain. Why do you I not want to be in pain? So I will live longer and with less pain. Why do I want that? So I have more quality time with my loved ones.

    Can you really ask for a spot? I’m afraid of bench pressing and hurting myself. Maybe I should use the smith machine? But at my gym I’ll have to move a bench across the gym to do that.
