The fact that the PAL music is messed up is crazy. UbiSoft seems to be notorious for corrupting music. Already with the N64 port of Donald Duck Goin Quackers (which is a port of the PC version that runs on the same engine as Rayman 2) they managed to corrupt the midi music completely, much to the composer's chagrin. There is an article about the corrupted music on the TCRF page of the game. It's really crazy.
I loved Rayman DS. It was one of the first games I bought with my own money. I grew up with Rayman 2 on the dreamcast but I damaged the disc when I was really young and I didn't know anything about emulation at the time. So this was finally a way for me to play Rayman 2 again after a few years of missing the game after I lost the dreamcast copy
When it comes to 3ds version of rayman 2, you've got to play it on a new 3ds, since you can overclock it, and make it work in a stable 60fps at all times, and it makes it kinda decent version. Avoid the 3ds version on older 3ds
You can also make Rayman DS run better on a jailbroken DSi if you set the game to run at the higher CPU clocks and RAM that version of the DS has. It's still not ideal but I thought it was worth mentioning.
You know something I always found to be somewhat interesting about Rayman Advance and DS is that they use the (at the time) current looks for Rayman for the covers. It always facinated me since the different art directions for the series clash so hard. Anyways this video was really fascinating. I hope you cover the DSi version of Rayman 1 and Rayman 3D soon. I actually played Rayman 1 DSi back in 2019 and played Rayman 3D during senior year of high school.
I do remember playing Rayman 3D and DS. Even though they’re just ports of the same game and have a few issues, they’re both still good, even if I find 3D’s version to feature one of the loudest music tracks I’ve ever heard.
I played the 3DS version and you know what? My only complaint was the audio balancing. It was repulsive! For whatever insane reason, they decided to make EVERYTHING near silent. And then they turned the music so high you can't hear any of the already silent sounds! But there's something peculiar: I looked at a playthrough of the 3DS version, and the audio is fine. So I must ask, is it an anti-piracy measure? ..........i didn't pirate it trust
I was introduced to Rayman through Rayman Advance back in 2002 and loved it. It's odd cuz I didn't realize it was a port of the original, I thought it was just a new Rayman game, and it's weird seeing all the differences. Despite the quality of the music in Advance, I still love it.
It was the first version of Rayman 2 I played. It’s not worth it, I thought the game just sucked ass for years before I realised that I was playing a horrible downgraded port and it’s actually a great game. Yeah, technically it’s pretty nice but it’s just not fun to play
I’ve seen two Rayman games in CEX and I’m unsure if that’s the right one to try first. It has the third game and Rayman advanced with this cool 3D effect cover
I played a lot of Rayman DS as a kid and, yeah, the Tomb of the Ancients is pretty prone to crashing towards the beginning. From my experience, it usually had something to do with the first spider that jumps down. Stopping to fight it usually ended with the game crashing and sometimes the spider just straight up disappears or turns invisible after landing. A tad glitchy, that one. It may have nothing to do with that first spider, but the game usually crashed anytime I tried to mess with it anyway. Rayman DS is serviceable at best, but the input lag with the d-pad and the lag in general bring it down pretty hard imo
5:58 - that right there, felt a magical moment, the fact that you can manually look at every layer of the official box art. I appreciate that you showed this in a video! 👏 C:
Great video as always! I remember borrowing a friend's copy of Rayman Advance when I was a kid after seeing the PS1 game, I loved the look and sound of the game but I couldn't deal with the screen crunch, still can't! Really interesting port though and I agree some of the music is really charming, "Deep Forest" still sounds really cool to me. I bought Rayman DS knowing about Rayman 2 on N64 (again through a friend) and thought it was cool to have a portable version but man the controls are something! Still cool at the time! Love hearing your thoughts man, keep it up!
8:30 That absolutely was a thing. My brother and I each had a copy where it crashed on Tomb of the Ancients right where the spider jumps down. There's also a chance the spider can no-clip into the ground and never show back up. That being said, despite all the glitches, Rayman DS at the time was pretty impressive to see on a handheld device. I still find myself playing just about any Rayman 2 port on any console.
Rayman Advance is honestly a remarkable port considering the hardware and being a launch title. The visuals are shockingly faithful, even the background parallax was intact. You can spot a lot of the quirks inherited from the DOS version too, including the lack of an end level jingle, the tings making a popping noise, and the second mosquito boss not having the unique red palette. According to a comment from a Digital Eclipse developer, the occasional pixelated sprites were the result of Ubisoft imposing an 8MB cartridge limit late in development, so they had to scale some of them down to reduce the file size. This would have been avoided with a larger capacity cart, earlier builds reportedly had intact sprites. I can't give the same praise to Rayman DS. It's a direct port of the N64 version, but with an even worse framerate, terrible input lag, and tons of glitches. You're not along with the game freezing, and that wasn't the only place it happened for me. I'd often get soft locked in a scripted cutscene in the Canopy level when Rayman is trying to hop onto platforms. Collision detection is also very broken, it's easy to clip through walls and floors. Worst version of the game by far. The 3DS version of Rayman 2 is better than the DS version. But it's still a lot worse than the Dreamcast. Very unstable framerate, lots of visual cuts and bugs, sound glitches, and the secret 1000th lum is bugged. The trampoline platform you're supposed to use to collect it doesn't function. There's a way to glitch yourself high enough to collect it, but attempting to exit the area softlocks the game. Given how butchered the 3DS port of Rayman 2 was, I shudder to imagine them trying to port Rayman 3 to it. They've also sort of stopped the Rayman porting frenzy these days too. The series is kind of dead again.
Rayman Advance was my introduction to the limbless hero, but I never got far (and replaying it awhile back, I now know why lol), but I remember the next one I've played after, Rayman DS I've spent so much time on, and then soon Rayman 3. ^^
Fantastic video! Still have my own copy of Rayman 10th anniversary for GBA, and Rayman Advance is definitely a guilty pleasure of mine, despite knowing there are better versions out there. As for Rayman DS... well, you heard what they did to the music in the PAL version 😭 young me was so confused, and I still am! You're welcome for the reminder, by the way, I still can't get over it 17 years later LOL
I remember playing the iOS version of Rayman 2 when I was younger. That was the first time I ever 100% completed Rayman 2. It was an enjoyable experience for me.
I understand these titles were launch titles for their respective systems, at least in Europe. Along with the Rayman launch titles on Wii and 3DS, it can be easy to forget how Rayman has been close with Nintendo for awhile.
Rayman Advance was my first GBA game I purchased as a kid, hell I didn't even know it was just a port of the og Rayman back then, it's also where I played Rayman 1 for the first time too, until I got the PS1 version towards my final year in college, similar story with Rayman DS, both ports are fine in their own right, especially if you never got to play the N64 version of Rayman 2 like myself growing up, another interesting video dude.
Had Rayman Advance for my GBA when I was a kid. Found the game to be amazing, but tough as hell. Imagine my surprise when I grew older that apparently I played the EASY MODE PORT.
"It's as if the port was designed for experts who know where everything is in ADVANCE...OH I GET IT!" Funnily enough, Rayman Advance was the third version of R1 that I played, but the first one I finished. When bosses drop below half health, they retain half damage if Rayman dies. That was a big helper in me finishing it in my teen years, combined with a nerfed top speed being the only way I finished the sliding section in Pencil Pentathlon as a kid. People are eager to rag on it, but the combination of unique music, using the DOS version as a base (the ting sounds are an indicator), the difficulty was made the kindest of nearly every official port - user friendly even. Then? Rayman DS ended up being my first exposure to the "original" R2, as I first owned the PSone version, but had only played the PC version at our primary school for two hours beforehand. So my first real experience playing the original R2 was this port. I'm sure my copy came with a stand-alone thumb stylus circle thing, packaged with my DSlite... and until I got to Whale Bay, I ended up 50/50 splitting between dpad and touch. As for it crashing? Can't say I've had it happen, but it was the first version I was able to glitch out of the jail in... would be good if Rayman didn't slide off barrels on the water though. Hilariously, all screenshots on box are prototypes and mock-ups, using the icon for Walk of Life and Power being the dpad design, and the stylus icon being the new (at the time) Ubisoft logo... have yet to see any official on hardware footage of it beyond the super imposed shots on DS models from trailers. Oh, and there's a dialogue error when Rayman saves Ly. "He's the spirit of the world. HIS POWER ARE IMMENSE!" While I didn't end up hanging on to my original copy of Rayman DS, I absolutely love Advance, and temporarily had two copies - standalone and through the anniversary cart. Great vid Framerater, every time someone takes an objective look at these ports rather than a rage-fueled clickbait, it feels like people get a better glimpse of the shine on these rougher gems.
Your not the only one. When I played the DS version (even it's not the version I grew up with. It was the N64 version) years ago. During my first playthrough of Tomb of the Ancients. The game would freeze on me three to four times. I don't know what keeps triggering it.. All I remember is every time I start the level. The spider at the beginning of the stage keeps clipping through the floor every time it drops down. And if you walk a few inches. The game will automatically freeze, causing me to start over again.
Rayman DS was my second ever experience with Rayman 2 aside from the PS1 version, and it was utterly fascinating seeing the differences between the two versions.
I recall seeing the PS1 version of Rayman 2 available on the Vita through the PS Store but, even though, the PS Store hasn't been shut down at all, it doesn't look like there are as many PS1 games as I remembered. I'm not sure whether those classics were removed entirely or that's just an issue with the EU PS Vita Store
funnily enough on the ps3 store you could get both the ps1 AND ps2 versions of rayman 2 the only other time ive seen something like that happen is the xbox and xbox 360 versions of splinter cell double agent being backwards compatible on xbox one (but that ones excusable because theyre different games, unlike them making like every assassins creed bc when only the first one doesnt have an xbox one port)
I was expecting the DSi shop of Rayman to be reviewed here. Guessing it's like the GBA port. I STILL have this game, transfered it to my new 3dsXL haha.
I've never played Rayman DS, but I've played the 3DS port and hated it towards the end. The flying missile in the last level seemed to have a mind of its own, which made that part 10x harder and more frustrating than in the original versions. And the other much bigger problem was the 1000th lum room in the Tomb of the Ancients: not only did the bouncing spider webs not bounce like they were supposed to, forcing me to damage boost my way up in the skull's eyes, but finishing the level through that exit crashed the game every single time, which means that the 3DS version is impossible to 100% as far as I'm aware.
I use to own Rayman Ds many years ago. I don't think I got past the first or second level due to how weird the controls were (that and I weren't very good at games back then).
i still cant believe i decided to 100% rayman 2 on the 3ds and actually did it. the damage boost on the 1000th lum was surprisingly not that hard to do
I had a good time with the 3DS port. There is a glitch that makes certain 2D sprites like fish and butterflies too big though. Other than that, the game runs perfectly and controls very well. The stereoscopic 3D is a great bonus in any fully 3D game.
The Rayman 1 port gave me Super Mario Advance vibes for putting “Advance” in the title of older games. (Except not being called “[Series] Advance [Number]: [Name of game being ported]”)
I have owned both of these ports at one point. Rayman Advance was my introduction to Rayman. Rayman 1 honestly is just too difficult for me to enjoy all that much, but it does have charm. As for the GBA port, it is a little hard for me to play these days, considering the screen crunch. While I have nostalgia for it, that couldn't save Advance for me. As for Rayman DS, that was my introduction to Rayman 2 not on PS1. I prefer the PS1 version of Rayman 2 for various reasons, but I will say the DS version was serviceable...at the time. Nowadays it's hard to play after playing better versions of the game. I mean I wasn't a big fan of the non-PS1 versions of the game anyway, but still, the DS version isn't that good.
Fucking hell! I was just playing Rayman DS last night and was wondering if you checked it out. Huge fan of you and your channel mate. Greetings from the UK!
A story I have with Rayman DS was in my copy since IDK if it's all copies in The Sanctuary of Rock and Lava, the part where you're on the flying leaf platforms, like with the guardian shown in 7:14 you'd just slip off but it's like the devs knew this happened so you could mash R to reset your possition on it because there's no way to actually stay on long enough for the section otherwise. th-cam.com/video/bjh5GktA_5c/w-d-xo.html I actually gave up with this version of the game thinking it was broken until I looked at this review which just ended a part on saying pressing R is a band aid on fixing the glitch which IIRC is also a solution for the guardian too.
4:19 "It's as if the port was designed for experts who know where everything is in Advance. Oh, I get it." -FrameRater Amazing joke, I laughed harder than I should at that.
i had one of those gen one Silver Nintendo Ds and yes Rayman DS was one of my first games i got with the system along with Mario Kart DS and funny enough with my GBA SP i also got Rayman Advance with it
The screen crunch on Advance is likely not due to GBA lack of power, but the GBA screen having a lower resolution than an old TV. So many SNES ports to GBA scaled down the screen, but the DKC ports' sprites and bgs were properly scaled down.
Sorry if this is a duplicate comment (My other one isn't showing up), but you should research if there was going to be a Gizmondo port of Rayman. The rayman gamefaqs page has a Gizmondo page and it seems to be cancelled. This might not be a thing, but anyways, nice video.
Oh Rayman DS, you horrible mess you. I think it might’ve been the first Rayman game I ever played (either that or Raving Rabbids 1). Even when I was kid, the game just felt… wrong. I remember just playing the game, straining my thumb on the D-Pad (no way i was using the stylus to play) and just thinking it wasn’t comfortable, or really that fun. I mean I still played it and beat it but I just remember everything about the experience being a relatively unpleasant one for reasons I can’t describe. It was just such a weird, off putting, aggressively French game that my young mind couldn’t comprehend. When I found out it was a port I just assumed ‘well, guess the game just sucks’ and didn’t think twice about it. Years later I played the PS1 port (which still isn’t amazing mind you) and then I realised I’d been dealt a shit hand and played probably the worst version of the game outside of IOS probably. Good times. And no I don’t remember it ever freezing on me. Maybe they fixed it with a revision or it wasn’t in the PAL copy I played. Either way that didn’t happen I don’t think
I may be asking a weird and stpd question so in andvance sorry, but, is there a mod to put the ps1 voice acting in the Dreamcast version?, I greew up with the ps1 and for me has been like the go to version just because of that even knowing thst it hss less game.
My first Rayman game was the Gameboy Rayman Advance. When i was little i did not understand what the F was going on. Still dont know much about rayman to this day, but i knew that little game was interesting and i knew something was missing. The video just informed me its on PC from the video clip. I knew it had a better version.
tbh advamce did not consider any player stuff. the levels were nit redesigned at the porting stage. so they probably just crunched the screen, without considering the rest (as the original game was made with bigger screen in mind)
Rayman DS was also my first Rayman game but also my first DS game. I love it to this day, flaws and all! I went on to play Rayman 3 on the GameCube later on, Rayman on the DSi, Rayman 3D and finally, Rayman Origins. Haven't played Legend yet but to be honest, I'm not a fan of the 2D Rayman games. 2 and 3 are spectacular though!
Ok, pet peeve time. When i was a kid, i too, also called that level “the precip-ice” But its actually pronounced “preci-piss” I learned that only after somebody pointed that out to me too…. Its a tricky word thats not commonly used, but i use it all the time now, Like as im writing this comment, at the precipice of this video…. Now we kinda know what it means, too :)
Rayman Advance, 1 on DSIWare, and DS incredibly impressive, considering they’re ports of console games! While there’s issues with them, I still think that they’re acceptable, even more so for 1 on DSIWare. Much more so if you’re in that Rayman mood on the go.
Those handheld rayman 2 ports are wreched. I couldn't believe how bad that DS port was when I played it. Not only was it horribly glitchy but the touch control settings wouldn't even save when you turned off the game.
PAL Rayman DS was my first Rayman 2 experience (it was one of the few cheaper games when I got mine around launch time), and the music is somehow worse than I remember! Kinda tempted to look into how much it'd cost me to get a US version because I otherwise fondly remember the game even if it is probably one of the worst versions overall of Rayman 2.

I recall seeing the PS1 version of Rayman 2 available on the Vita through the PS Store but, even though, the PS Store hasn't been shut down at all, it doesn't look like there are as many PS1 games as I remembered. I'm not sure whether those classics were removed entirely or that's just an issue with the EU PS Vita Store
funnily enough on the ps3 store you could get both the ps1 AND ps2 versions of rayman 2
the only other time ive seen something like that happen is the xbox and xbox 360 versions of splinter cell double agent being backwards compatible on xbox one (but that ones excusable because theyre different games, unlike them making like every assassins creed bc when only the first one doesnt have an xbox one port)
I used to have Rayman DS. I sold it back in 2015 along with a bunch of other games. Just to get a Wii U game.
I was expecting the DSi shop of Rayman to be reviewed here. Guessing it's like the GBA port. I STILL have this game, transfered it to my new 3dsXL haha.
It’s basically the dos version and his improved visuals and less screen crunch. Also adds a stupid amount of health.
literally unplayable because every time you use a checkpoint it loudly takes a picture of you
I've never played Rayman DS, but I've played the 3DS port and hated it towards the end.
Rayman 3D was my second time playing through Rayman 2, with the PSX being the first.
I remember developing hand cramps using the touchscreen to move.
I use to own Rayman Ds many years ago. I don't think I got past the first or second level due to how weird the controls were (that and I weren't very good at games back then).
That Ugandan Knuckles at the beginning made me realize just how far your channel has come 😂
i still cant believe i decided to 100% rayman 2 on the 3ds and actually did it. the damage boost on the 1000th lum was surprisingly not that hard to do
I had a good time with the 3DS port. There is a glitch that makes certain 2D sprites like fish and butterflies too big though. Other than that, the game runs perfectly and controls very well. The stereoscopic 3D is a great bonus in any fully 3D game.
I would love a video where you list the best part of each of the Rayman entries
The Rayman 1 port gave me Super Mario Advance vibes for putting “Advance” in the title of older games. (Except not being called “[Series] Advance [Number]: [Name of game being ported]”)
It kind of baffles me they haven’t done a port of Rayman 2 or 3 for current platforms.
There's also a fantastic Rayman game released for the Game Boy Color which was not a port of all the other version.
It's a good game.
The game over screen was traumatising to me
it has some level design directly from rayman 1 tho
Always happy to see more rayman stuff
08:28 : It never happened to me. Is that exclusive to the NTSC version or not? I've only played the PAL release.
I knew there was something up with the PAL version's soundtrack
Thanks for the kind donation once again melasauce. =D
I find it funny that Ubi Soft had a Rayman game at the launch of the GBA, The DS and The 3DS
Fucking hell! I was just playing Rayman DS last night and was wondering if you checked it out. Huge fan of you and your channel mate. Greetings from the UK!
A story I have with Rayman DS was in my copy since IDK if it's all copies in The Sanctuary of Rock and Lava, the part where you're on the flying leaf platforms, like with the guardian shown in 7:14 you'd just slip off but it's like the devs knew this happened so you could mash R to reset your possition on it because there's no way to actually stay on long enough for the section otherwise.
th-cam.com/video/bjh5GktA_5c/w-d-xo.html
I actually gave up with this version of the game thinking it was broken until I looked at this review which just ended a part on saying pressing R is a band aid on fixing the glitch which IIRC is also a solution for the guardian too.
Oh yeah that's definitely an issue, same sorta thing happens with the second temple boss shown in video.
4:19 "It's as if the port was designed for experts who know where everything is in Advance. Oh, I get it." -FrameRater
Amazing joke, I laughed harder than I should at that.
i had one of those gen one Silver Nintendo Ds and yes Rayman DS was one of my first games i got with the system along with Mario Kart DS and funny enough with my GBA SP i also got Rayman Advance with it
The screen crunch on Advance is likely not due to GBA lack of power, but the GBA screen having a lower resolution than an old TV. So many SNES ports to GBA scaled down the screen, but the DKC ports' sprites and bgs were properly scaled down.
Gotcha, just fixed the part thanks!
I think "precipice" is actually pronounced "press a piss". lol
DUDEEE, I'd love to see a video of you comparing N64 and DS ports. I didn't realise that the DS got more than just Mario 64.
Hearing the "Yeah" at the end of the level without the jingle just feels off to me 😢
Got the gba one bundled with my console! Was my birthday present in 2002 :)
I currently use my Steam Deck to emulate all my Rayman titles. It's great fun playing Rayman 3 on the go.
I bet, especially using the fan HD pack + widescreen.
I got Rayman 3D to work in stable 60fps on a softmodded New 3DS.
Shame Nintendo didn't include a "boost mode" on that console right out of the box.
Love it when people make videos about Rayman!
tbh advamce did not consider any player stuff. the levels were nit redesigned at the porting stage. so they probably just crunched the screen, without considering the rest (as the original game was made with bigger screen in mind)
When i was a kid, i too, also called that level “the precip-ice”
But its actually pronounced “preci-piss”
I learned that only after somebody pointed that out to me too…. Its a tricky word thats not commonly used, but i use it all the time now,
Like as im writing this comment, at the precipice of this video…. Now we kinda know what it means, too :)
Oh hey I remember playing the pc version, surprisingly good and he always reminded me of the snes game Plok!
Aww why no Rayman DSi review as well? I really liked that port as a kid
Might some day do a combo video of Rayman DSi and 3DS like this one.
@@FrameRater dope
7:50 What do you by "it's absent from the original"?
*what do you mean by
That four second sequence isn't present in the original N64 soundtrack. This is also the case for Rayman DS as it was based on this version.
@@FrameRater Ah ok, I thought you meant the PC version. Thanks for clarifying 😎
Still missing the "Yeah Frametater" in the intro 😭
Rayman advance was the game I got when the gba advanced launched
8:07 IS THAT THE STOCK WINDOWS MIDI SOUNDFONT
Rayman Advance, 1 on DSIWare, and DS incredibly impressive, considering they’re ports of console games!
While there’s issues with them, I still think that they’re acceptable, even more so for 1 on DSIWare. Much more so if you’re in that Rayman mood on the go.
Am i the only one that grew up with my first rayman game being rayman advance
Despite the CD's higher audio fidelity, I actually like Advance's arrangements better.
On the GBA version, You can actually cheat the Mosquito boss (2nd time) by spamming Raymans fist attack.
How come many Bundles of games many would want only tend to come out in Europe?
Rayman ds brings back some memories
I have all the Rayman GBA titles. I liked them all.
I've never had an issue with the d-pad controls on DS. Probably cause I grew up with the PC version with keyboard controls.
great video love, the edting and style of talking
Have you tried out the N-Gage Version? I have fond memories of playing it and it was my first Rayman game.
Thank you! Haha, I was looking through the comments frantically for any mention of the N-Gage port ;p
Side-talkers unite!!
Very fond memories of the first Rayman ❤
Theres people making fanmade game like rayman M2 and rayman scepter of leptys
Those handheld rayman 2 ports are wreched. I couldn't believe how bad that DS port was when I played it. Not only was it horribly glitchy but the touch control settings wouldn't even save when you turned off the game.
Only 12 mins long 😭 please bro I need longer content
Man you're the best in rayman stuff.
I got Rayman 3D with my 3DS. I barely played it.
My first Rayman game…
Rayman Brain Games for the PS1
I think objectively the new intro is better.....but I do kinds miss the old "yeah framerater" intro
An luck reviving the Corpse of Rayman 4, did you hear the music for the jaguar version RAYMAN.
Why didn't Ubisoft port Rayman 3 to the 3DS instead of Rayman 2? or better yet all 3 of the original Rayman games?
Best Rayman 2 version has got to be the Dreamcast one in sweet 60 fps
I am very jealous of your Ugandan Knuckles figure. Also nice Rayman video. 👍
How could they mess up the DS version of Rayman 2 when Super Mario 64 DS ran perfectly at a smooth 30fps without glitches?
PAL Rayman DS was my first Rayman 2 experience (it was one of the few cheaper games when I got mine around launch time), and the music is somehow worse than I remember! Kinda tempted to look into how much it'd cost me to get a US version because I otherwise fondly remember the game even if it is probably one of the worst versions overall of Rayman 2.
Rayman DS looks more to be based on the PS1 version with N64 music. Rayman 3D is based on the Dreamcast Version
Nothing about it resembles the PS1 version, it was a fairly straightforward port of the N64 version.
Sunshine of Trip is the best Rayman GBA game, I'd know, I'd beaten it, albeit emulated & with abused save-states on-hand. XD
Obvious sarcasm.
Frame rater’s back to talk some rayman
