The #78 Kenworth was insanity, blows my mind that Semis can move that quick. But I think the Gmc detroit was the real show stopper, that thing is badass!

at about 3:54 the commentator mentions 70 miles per hour. I presume in reference to the end of the run.
I am Joe.... without knowing what it's governed at, as well as what his final drive ratio is... just knowing what "gear he was in", would be almost meaningless.
@@Romans--bo7br I’ve driven enough trucks with 10,13 and 18 speeds with a multitude of gear ratios to have a pretty good idea. Heavy duty diesel mechanic with CDL.

I'm sure you could guess within the "ballpark", but as I said.. without knowing the final drive ratio and engine rpm at any given moment... it would be just that, a "ballpark" guesstimate... close, but certainly not exact, as I'm sure you must be well aware, considering your experience.
I was never a licensed diesel mechanic.... however I do hold a 4 year degree in Diesel Engine Design (prep for R&D), in 4 cycle, but specializing in two cycle, from back in the 1960s and also attended one of Detroit Diesel's Power Systems Training Centers over a two year period, and was invited to sit in as an advisor to their R&D team back in the early & mid 1970s.
Life took a turn, and I got involved in drag racing ("rails" only) and then got into trucking as an owner operator, in order to finance my racing. I retired not too long ago with officially, over 6.4M miles (all, accident free).
My transmission experience includes, but not limited to.. Mack 5spd with a "dead stick", Mack Duplex, Triplex, Quad Box & triple counter-shaft 12spd (Great box!). Also, Spicer 4x4 (twin stick compound 4616 box), 5x3, 5x4 and double over 6x4's which I had in my own trucks (KW's with V12's).
I have never used an 18 spd (modern single stick), but have used Fuller 10, 13 (13 spd direct, over, & under versions) and 15spd.
I did ALL of my own trucks servicing, preventative maintenance, engine building (re: modifications), as well as built all of my own drag race engines, as well as for a few others, also.
I was involved with the Lady Butterfly pulling truck (1974 KW - V12 w/Allison HD 750) as well, on the NTPA and East Coast Pullers Assoc. circuits in the Pro Semi Class.
How long have you been turning wrenches on trucks / engines? What engines are you most experienced with?
For your "dream truck", what engine platform would you use to build to 1000 hp, and for what reason or reasons for that choice?
@@Romans--bo7br Amazing reply and good read on your life of excitement. Yes my guess would be only ballpark as you have said many factors are involved. It was more of a curiosity as to get to that speed in that short distance with a steel brick weighing as much as they do is amazing.
You certainly have many years of experience over me. Besides 10, 13, 18 speeds my experience with others is not enough to speak upon. I was lucky to have worked at a farm as a young man and learned how to drive some odd ball transmissions. I did get to try an 18 speeds with 3 sticks, and my opinion is cool to look at but dumb to use.
At the farm my diesel engine experience was mainly 855 Cummins, 3406, 3408 Cat and some John Deere's can't remember engine models. I've never had a chance to play with 2 Stokes as all the ones i've been around ran just fine. A good testament on those old screaming jimmy's haha.
I had a bad work injury 9 years ago which has left my back in a state that my mechanical career is down to hobby only. I always prefer doing my own servicing but will hire and pay for good work. I've been in the computer world now for a few years but wanting to get back into long haul specialty hauls. I used to haul over dimension or over weight loads. I've also hauled the Ice Roads. I live in Canada =).
So as per my dream truck with 1000hp, seeing as i've hauled crane bodies, cranes houses etc i want the power to pull without flat footing everywhere you go. The heaviest load to date i've hauled was 228000 lbs crane house. Big power, Big loads, Big money, and work far less is where i want to go. I'm a typical KW W900L lover and 6NZ would be my choice for my power goals. The reason for 6NZ are the supporting modification and supporting hardware. From what i've gather over the internet is everything from engine to back of transmission is far superior and just easier to build. I have still lots to dive into when it comes to big rig tuning.

Favorite truck was the 50's GMC w/the 71 or 92, whatever was in it. Spun too much off the line. Needs to line the frame rails with lead and weigh that beoch down. he he

There are different classes. The basic difference is turbo size allowed in them up to class a which is basically run whatever you want. Compounds. Giant single whatever.
