Thanks Ginny, the guidance is very appreciated. Pulling the trigger on starting a business (especially in California) is a bit scary. It also helps having this knowledge in advance before consulting a CPA pre - launch of doing the DBA. (Quarter taxes, listings, etc) Most of my vendors are here in California, and I plan on moving out of state, but still working with them. My CPA is going to hate me! ;)

If you are a marketplace seller, beginning October 1, 2019, you are no longer considered the retailer of your sales of tangible merchandise facilitated through a marketplace, as defined by statute, provided the marketplace facilitator is registered or required to be registered for a seller's permit or Certificate of Registration - Use Tax. as stated here www.cdtfa.ca.gov/industry/MPFAct.htm - I do cover this in the video as well. You should still however get your business license, DBA, etc to be a legally operating business.

If only selling intangible products you do not need a sellers permit but you still need all other business licensing/registrations.

Yes, shopify doesnt conduct sales and take sales tax for you.

You’d need a EIN (employer identification number) from the IRS website, it’s easy and free!

No. You need a sellers permit and must collect and remit sales tax to the CDTFA.

I messed up & left on the DBA my name rather than the company name I'll be opening up. Is there a way to get that fixed or should I file a new registration?
Thanks for the helpful video. If I'm only selling on amazon and since they are the Market Facilitator, do I still need to apply for the sellers permit? I've seen some other videos saying you do have to apply and get one and will need to file but will pay $0 since Amazon will collect and remit them to the state on my behalf. Any help is appreciated, I don't want to go through the process if I really don't need one.
If you are a marketplace seller, beginning October 1, 2019, you are no longer considered the retailer of your sales of tangible merchandise facilitated through a marketplace, as defined by statute, provided the marketplace facilitator is registered or required to be registered for a seller's permit or Certificate of Registration - Use Tax. as stated here www.cdtfa.ca.gov/industry/MPFAct.htm - I do cover this in the video as well. You should still however get your business license, DBA, etc to be a legally operating business.
@@ginnysilver thank you so much for your response. I went ahead and applied for the permit today and it just processed, wish I seen your response earlier but it’s ok I can cancel it. I do have the other business docs completed (LLC, business license etc).

I tried to follow your directions but the website has changed. Says I need to register and have a security code mailed to me. But it won’t let me submit the request because I don’t know my account number. So confused!

I just saw in an earlier post that Ginny said the account number will be on the final page once you complete the sellers permit.
