Budget Friendly Foxbody Rear Disc Brake Upgrade (Please note: I have Rotors backwards in the video)

  • I found a budget friendly rear disc brake kit from Foxbodybrakes.com for around $500. I added the parking brake cable for another $100. I will show you how I installed this kit. I do not show bleeding the brakes as there are plenty of videos doing so.
    ******** I need to point out I made a mistake in the video. The rotors are directional so I have them reversed. *********
    Disc kit:

    Parking Brake Cable: foxbodybrakes.com/collections...
    They are D627 pads, SN95 Cobra pads.

    On the parking brake cable, there is a side that looks like a ball, and one that looks more like a cylinder. It looks like you pushed the ball side through to the parking brake, that side is actually smaller than the cylinder side. I'm measuring the ball side at around 12.4 mm and the cylinder side at around 13.4 mm. When pushing the ball side to the caliper, and the cylinder side to the parking brake - it all fits.
    And thanks for the video, I watched it multiple times along with a few others before I attempted this on my ride!

    Save up a bigger pile of money and do the complete 5-lug conversion at one time. Any 94-95 Mustang (or a 96-04 if you go to an aftermarket k-member) is a donor for the hard parts (spindles, axles, etc.). You'll have a huge selection of wheels to choose from and can easily move up to serious brakes in the future. Maximum Motorsports can help if you need parts and advice.

      @@mathewshackelford8037 The proportioning valve has nothing to do with the size of the calipers or cylinders,it has to do with the rear and front brake bias and when you install rear discs is almost mandatory to get a valve since drums and discs are totally different animals and requires a little more fine tuning than the non adjustable proportioning valve the cars come with can give.
      I believe what the op might be referring to is the master cylinder, if you get big boy brakes up front then you need a new master cylinder but if you only fool with the back brakes then you dont, maybe hes been lucky and everything is working great and thats good, but i would get a proportioning valve and adjust it accordingly.

    Thank you for doing this. Have a 93' Cobra and now my Dad's 91' GT we've had since new, and the 91' is needing some TLC after being a daily for 30 years. My idea is the make the 91' a Mountain "Touge"/Circuit setup because the car had always loved curvy roads but I noticed the brakes are a massive weak spot when trying to work the car into a corner. So when I started tearing the car down I decided the brakes and the cars wiring are going to be the first thing I build from scratch. This helped me alot watching this so thank you.
    And just an idea for maybe doing it cheaper, the 93' Cobra uses either a thunderbird or mercury rear disc setup if not mistaken, so if you can find what car from the 80's SVT used when building the cobra you may be able to source a rear disc setup used (You will need the brackets for conversion though)
    Good luck all, and remember to be careful in the rain especially. These old foxes don't have good brakes and no ABS, and when someone pulls out in front of you things can get sketchy..
    Good luck everyone.

  • @TheTTVert

    That is one clean foxbody undercarriage! Did you change the prop valve and master? The fluid volume required to lockup will change drum to disk and you should look into that.

    • @fixthemthings
      @fixthemthings  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, it has been garage kept it’s whole life. The lockup only happens if I hit it as hard as I can which I probably shouldn’t have done yet as it needs to break first. I would think both should lock up if it was a proportioning valve problem. I’m thinking I should have went ahead and did the clutch packs. I was too lazy to fumble with the spring and said “screw it.”

    • @TheTTVert
      @TheTTVert 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fixthemthings I was more referring to rebalancing your line pressure front versus rear. Do your front brakes lock up before the back? I know back in the day when we either gutted the proportion involved or put in an adjustable proportioning valve. And of course change the bore of the master cylinder by replacing with a 93 cobra type or aftermarket but people were doing more bear brakes and things back then. I've done a turbo coupe rear disc setup as well as baer tiring 12" and to get the brake bias proper I had to modify both the MC and prop valve. Of course that won't affect side to side pressure just front to back

      Don’t need it for this setup. If the calipers were bigger, then yes.

      I bought it cause they told me to. I have to replace brake line because it was a 4 banger. I guess it can't hurt to add it.

      No worries.
      Yes you would want to get cables (we list 78-92, and 93 cables) in other auctions. I would recommend a prop valve (adjustable), and our prop valve plug. This should be all that is needed.
      In some cases if your handle self tensioner is worn out you might need the short adjustable cable, but we always recommend installation first as many do not need it. This was foxbody response. Guess it can't hurt. How do you adjust it?

    Hate to say this, but I bought this rear kit, had it installed and did not notice any difference in stopping power. I'm going to have another mechanic look it over for a 2nd opinion.

      have you got proportional valve installed? you may need to adjust that to add more rearward brake pressure..

      @olliej914 thanks for the pro tip, I will relay to my mechanic.

      Since the rear brakes do about 30% of the stopping you may not notice a difference. The advantage of disc brakes is a greater resistance to fade. The ultimate limitation of a brake system is the amount of grip at the tire contact patch.

    Will this kit fit with 15x10 wheels??

      That would be a good question for Fox Body Brakes. They are great about returning communications. I would think so though.
