This was an absolute lifesaver. Not a work-related project for me but a personal sketch I wanted to make into a vector for sentimental purposes. I'm good enough with the pen tool for most applications but I could spot the anchor points a mile away and blah. Five minutes of this tool and it's done. I love learning new things. Cheers!
Oh my gosh.....THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! I have been KILLING myself trying to smooth out a handwritten font. You have just saved me! 10 out of 10 would recommend!
So great to hear Cheyenne! Thanks for letting me know! You might want to check out my Pen tool video, there's some good tips and tricks in that one too!
Thank you so much this is exactly what I needed. I'm only 18, about 6 months into learning illustrator, and about to be a second year college learning this stuff and I have the opportunity currently to make a logo for a restaurant so I need it to be as good as I can make it. This helped me SO MUCH MORE than trying to use the curvature and pen tool. SO helpful THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
dang! that was cool. corner view is good. LOL draws us in. focus. hands are focus oriented/ keep me looking/focused. can't wait to see what you have also posted. Thx! SO much time wasted on stroked fonts over last 2 days... omg. this is cool stuff.
Amazing~!!! I've been practicing the PEN tool for a few days now...(new to Illustrator) and I'm really determined to master this thing and I've pretty much got it...but I noticed on a few of my trace exercises that there were a couple of places that no matter what I did I just could not get it exactly smooth...this is perfect. Thank you so much for your training. Blessings.
This is a great tip , it helps me a lot , i got big trouble making a logo for a friend of mine, i was not happy with the curves that i made and your video helped me a lot thanks!
School isn't the best option for everyone! I'm 100% self taught. I went to school over 10 years into my career as a design as I thought that piece of paper might help me land bigger clients - it didn't. What helped me land bigger clients was being confident and continually learning my craft to be the best designer I could be.
Hi Mike! First off, I find your videos on Illustrator very helpful. Now, to the point: After watching this video I am left not knowing exactly how this tool works. What I mean is - does the line I draw with the smooth tool matter, as in the curves aim towards the line I draw with the smooth tool, or is it irrelevant? Thanks again
@Wonderful thank you, happy to hear you find my tutorials helpful! As for the proper usage of the Smooth Tool there's really no accuracy required with it. You'll want to be close to the line you're looking to adjust, I try to put the circle cursor right over top of the area I'm trying to smooth out. Direction doesn't matter. You can use long strokes along a path or short quick click strokes to adjust a single anchor point. I hope that answers your question?
Hey Anas! Thank you for the question. There is no built in keyboard shortcut for the Smooth Tool. It's built in with the Shaper Tool (shift + n) and the Pencil tool (n). If you use either of those keyboard shortcuts it will highlight the tool in the tools pallet and you can then click and hold that tool in the pallet to get the fly out to select the Smooth Tool. If you still don't see it you may need to show advanced tools - click the 3 dots at the bottom of the tools pallet, then click the hamburger menu in the top right of the fly out and then check Advanced. You should now be able to use the keyboard shortcut for either the Pencil or the Shaper Tool and then click and hold on that tool highlighted in the tool pallet to get the fly out menu to select the smooth tool. I hope this helps.
Of course there is a company that sells plugin tools that makes drawling lines easy, why wouldn't adobe make that a feature? Who knows. Thank you highlighting this feature.
The Astute plugin, I assume that's what you're talking about, is an amazing set of plug-ins! I haven't had a chance to use any of them yet but from what I've seen they make many of the tools and options in Illustrator better or even adds some functionality that's not even available in Illustrator. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I brought in a PNG logo, sized it, then saved as export. then i re-opened the export file in illustrator. tried to select my blurry letters to smooth, now my draw tool bar is completely greyed out. Can't select smooth tools at all.
A png would need to be turned into a vector first. You can use the image trace tool to crate the vector and then use the various tools on that vector. Illustrator will not make changes to Easter images like png, jpeg or other image formats.
Click on the 3 dots at the bottom of the tools menu, then either find and drag the smooth over or click the menu icon in the top of the fly out and click Advanced.
Sorry, but I would need more details to help! Do you mean when you double click on the Smooth tool no options appear? If that's the case, I wouldn't be able to help, you would want to get in touch with Adobe. If that's not what you're asking please provide me with more details.
im so stupid. every time i select the lines i want to smooth, click with the smooth tool, and use the smooth tool, the selection i originally made disappears and only one line is selected and barely anything is smoothed. does anyone know what im doing wrong?

Click on the 3 dots at the bottom of the tools menu, then either find and drag the smooth over or click the menu icon in the top of the fly out and click Advanced.
why there is no other option under smooth tool?

does adobe illustrator 2020 not have the smooth tool?
It's still there but you may have to add it using the three dots at the bottom of the tools menu. You might be on basic settings.
Mike Pickett Design Co. yes . just figured that out 🤦🏻♂️ thanks tho!
im so stupid. every time i select the lines i want to smooth, click with the smooth tool, and use the smooth tool, the selection i originally made disappears and only one line is selected and barely anything is smoothed. does anyone know what im doing wrong?
You need to only smooth one line at a time. If you select more than 1 line and then click the smooth tool it will deselect everything.
@@MikePickettDesignCo ah I see, im not using a single path as shown in the video. im using several lines. i appreciate the quick reply! v helpful!
Is it a Fender?
If you're talking about the guitar in the background, no - that's a Gibson Flying V. It's the 2nd guitar James Hetfield from Metallica bought!
first i saw...i think james hetfield who gave the tutorial

Duh, you're sitting in the corner teaching the smoothing tool! I'm a little slow.
