    Cool update Peter, love the fact that you share your scenic methods with the client. Pity to see those track buckles, guess that’s almost inevitable with prefabrication in sections, transportation and installment on final location. Plus, the unavoidable differences in climate, temperature and humidity the entire construction is exposed to during the entire process. In anticipation of the necessary maintenance skills to be acquired by the client, I humbly think the decision to not bring any tools is the right one. It definitely creates the opportunity of the needed learning curve or skill build. Cheerio

      There will always be maintenance issues on a model railroad. Other than track-cleaning, those that were necessary in this situation are probably the most common. They are easy to fix, and it's good that I had the opportunity to teach the owner how to do them, even though that takes far longer than just doing it for him.

    Looking good! Watch out - you might get hired to scenic the whole thing. 🙂 Lots of twigs, etc. on the scenery - just gathered locally? I like seeing that sort of stuff - forests and scrub areas are *not* tidy things, at least around here.

    Good Ole' Michigan Winter Weather. To solve the problem when we lived in Michigan, I installed a whole house humidifier system. Solved all my problems with the layout and the comfort that it provide during the winter was fantastic. A well spent $400.00.

    That looks great, glad you had a customer that worked with you, the last one I did for someone they slapped down scenry before I even had tracks wired and operational, then cut sections of track and installed turnouts over a module joint that wasnt leveled yet, they did it wrong but they didnt want to make it right, they will always have a problem there in that section of track, but wont listen. glad your customer has an ear to listen. LAYOUT looks great

    I noticed in this one you did not put the plaster cloth over the entirety of the foam like you have done in the past. I know that you have also said that the “sculptamold sticks to anything”. Is that the reason you skipped that step or was there some other reason? Thanks.

    • @mpeterll
      @mpeterll  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Whenever I know exactly what areas will be covered with sculptamold and which will have plaster rocks, I only use the plaster cloth as a backing for the rocks with enough of a tab sticking out to grab the sculptamold. The sculptamold grabs the foam better than the plaster cloth.

    Great video Peter. Is buckling of the track at the sectional joints common?

    • @FierroDuroRails
      @FierroDuroRails ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it is common. it happen to me when I built my n scale layout metal expands and retracts depending on weather conditions.

      Hopefully the Baltic Pine might be less prone to changes in the weather.

    • @mpeterll
      @mpeterll  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most railroads that I've transported and installed have had a few such areas needing attention. On this railroad, the joint I pointed out was the only one. On the tracks at the far side where the buckling was worst, I cut out a tiny piece from each rail (less than 1mm), and last time I was there, the gaps were much larger than that. Although the layout is in a climate-controlled room, there will always be some variation. The trick is find a happy medium where both extremes can be tolerated.
      Baltic Birch should minimize the problems.

    I think it would be really nice to work with you on a layout but I would need to somehow become extremely wealthy for that to happen

    • @mpeterll
      @mpeterll  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not necessarily. You can have me spend a week working with you on your railroad for a few thousand dollars (depending on distance). Many people spend more than that on other things that leave them nothing to show for it: smoking, drinking, vacations, golf. It's all about what one prioritizes in one's life. How you choose to spend disposable income is your choice. One of my regular customers was a school-teacher - certainly not "extremely wealthy".

      @@mpeterll for me it’s more the lack of a home of my own than anything else I have a layout that needs some improvement electronically that I am working on right now. The fact that I am only 1 and a half hours from Tennessee Memphis to be exact would make diagnosis easy for me. But not having any employment due to a certain epidemic and living in a different state than normal watching my families home while they are away.
