I have recently found this haunting gem of a movie, Un Profete on Cable TV and I watched it four times, already, loving every minute and especially savoring this beautiful song at the end. Like the story of the progression of a young man's innocence and how things all fell together, the song and film must be sipped slowly like a fine wine (or beer, if you will). I am so glad to read the insightful and enthusiastic comments here on TH-cam. The critics that didn't see the genius of this great work are amateurs. I will keep watching it whenever I see it and enjoy this perfect work of art.
Could not agree with you more KirriC !! I love this movie. I watch at least every 6 months or so, and am usually surprised by finding something interesting or some nuanced play, that happened in it, I'd not noticed before ... An altogether delightful portrait in character progression !! I haven't watched many French films for years... Wish I could find another with the intelligent appeal of this simply enthralling, as you say "work of art" !!
The more I see this movie the more it seems like a docudrama. It seems to pull me in. My favorite part is the scene where he gets out of prison at the very end with this song playing. There is a Trailer of it here on TH-cam.
KirriC Couldn't agree more my friend... Just a great story of a hungry lost guy making his way in this wicked world, like almost everyone of us has experienced at times in our own lives ... lol.
wow, just found this song and this comment thread. i also watch this beautiful movie every few months, and recommend it to everyone. inexplicably though, i only found one other person who seems to love it like i do. (until now!)
I heard this song after watching the movie The Prophet..I was captured and Became a JDG lover..this is one of the most beautiful renditions ever and JDG is so great..I am a fan and so grateful he exists
What a wonderful version of Mack the Knife and what a fantastic ending to a wonderful film - A Prophet - congrats to all involved in this recording, the film and the individual posting this!
@friendlyisle Some, like the shark, present a clear and obvious danger. Others (like shadowy, elusive and deadly "Macheath") operate in anonymity and are even more dangerous. Written and performed with the fine meter of poetry - this is an outstanding piece of work!
Oh the shark has pretty teeth, Dear And he shows them, pearly white Just a jackknife has MacHeath, Dear And he keeps it out of sight. When the shark bites through his victim Scarlet spreads a'mongst the rain But white gloves wears our MacHeath, Babe And the blood is never seen. Seven children and their Grandpa In the fire near old Soho Who's that creeping around the corner? Doesn't speak and doesn't know. Solly Silver'stein has vanished Likewise other rich young men And MacHeath has all their money Try and prove it, if you can. Sookey Tawdry, Jenny Diver, Polly Peachum, Lucy Brown Oh the line forms on the right, dear Now that Mack' he's back in town. Oh the shark has pearly teeth, Babe And he keeps them in his face Just a jacknife has MacHeath, Babe Keeps it in a different place............... 😉
Great song, produced by Buddy Miller and Jimmy Dale. From the album "One Endless Night". I first heard this version of Mack the Knife at the beginning of the 2001 Oscar-winning short "The Accountant", see that if you can. (I'm getting the One Endless Night album).
I had never heard of this singer and this version I did not know. for me this is the best version maybe there are better, I thought at first that Willie Nelson was when I watched the movie. It is also the first time I listen to the text
I kind of agree with this, with the caveat that its possible that if it was playing while movie credits scrolled at the end of the film, the "point" had been made more or less for the preceding hour to the viewer. I.e., this lullaby take on the tune might be very effective as a sort of balm if you've just watched something that is intended to shake you up. On its own on youtube, it comes across as a "Cowboy Junky-ization" of Kurt Weill, a beautiful but kind of empty atmospheric dirge.
Jimmy Dale is a nearly unique west Texas talent. He takes a song and makes it his own - like this classic. I've seen him with the Flatlanders; with a small acoustic combo; and perhaps best of all, at Blind Willie's in Atlanta with a full knock your dick in the dirt rock band. Blind Willie's is a hole in the wall blues joint, but not on that night.
Wonderful lyrics compared to most songs out there. Simple on the surface but actually quite complex with Macheath as an allegory for all the faceless behind-the-scene evil-doers out there. The song has an interesting history and evolution, rich with historical references. Try search "Everything you ever wanted to know about Mack the Knife" if you're interested.
Movie? This is from a movie? What's the movie? I can not think of the right adjectives to adequately express my feelings about this performance, I'll just leave it with "I like it".
Perfect ending to a movie.
I saw this film when it came out.. In a meandering dream of a past life.. Haunting memories of pain and love plague the soul. Hell of a flick..

Without a doubt my favourite movie of all time
My favorite version of this song. Jimmie Dale Gilmore does no wrong. 🎶🎶💙

Belter of a movie. One of the best my eyes have ever seen.
IMO the best version ever of this timeless classic. Words can't adequately describe just how hauntingly beautiful this rendition is.

Brilliant film and this at the end is just sublime.
Genius at work! If the production of this song had been medical research it would have cured cancer.
Two movies which I absolutely love; Un Prophete and Cinema Paradiso. It's all about LIFE, short and hairy.
yeah the song fitted perfectly at the end
PRobably the most ominous and sinister version of this classic, ever ,
Genius interpretation, gives this song another life which is totally new and equally good as the "jolly" version.
love the ending of 'a prophet'
Great voice. classic song. stunning.
I've never heard a song about a cold blooded Mafia hit man sung with such tenderness and feeling. The oddest combination I've ever heard.
That's how the film treats it's protagonist's journey to becoming a gangster as well. It's only fitting
QUITE SIMPLY A BRILLENT RENDITION OF A GREAT SONG.
"WHO'S THAT CREEPING AROUND THE CORNER" OH YEAH
There are many great versions of this great Kurt Weill tune, but this is one of the very best!!!
You can hear some of 'Hank' in that sorrowful voice & haunting tone.....love it!

Fantastic, amazing, brilliant, powerfull, sad. I was blown away.

Best Jacques Audiard movie.
GREAT MOVIE AND INCREDIBLE RENDICION OF AN OLD CLASSIC.
J'adore. 💜💜
Wonderful
great movie, lovely music for the credits
Amazing movie. Not a great fan of French films but this one most definitely an exception. Touching ending. 10/10
I love this cat - Jimmie- like him in the Flatlanders too, life is good with him in mine, ya know?
Oh the shark has pretty teeth, Dear
And he shows them, pearly white
Just a jackknife has MacHeath, Dear
And he keeps it out of sight.
When the shark bites through his victim
Scarlet spreads a'mongst the rain

Seven children and their Grandpa
In the fire near old Soho
Who's that creeping around the corner?
Doesn't speak and doesn't know.

And MacHeath has all their money
Try and prove it, if you can.

Thank you!

Très belle musique qui va comme un gant a ce film ce chef d'œuvre
It's a french prison drama called "A Prophete", it's really good. This song ends the movie.
Bellissimo Film
This is so fucking smooth, I love it. Good movie too.

absolutely.
Love This .
Saw the movie yesterday,so had to have more JDG!

amazing song
A écouter dès que tu sors du hèbs
A Prophet - really good movie with multiple oscar worthy. I liked it better than The Slumdog millionaire.

If you're not already, you, sir, should be a writer. Love our wordsmith skills!
