    great case study. makes me wonder if the dash is indeed defective or is it a part revision or substitution for which there should be a bulletin on or just a wrongly numbered part. would be interesting to look up the wiring for different years to see if can high and low are consistantly the same pinout and the part number remains the same.

    I did a video a few years ago on one of these old minis. That ended up being a K bus short to ground, found after exhaustive search. While poking around I found the DLC is like this one, not attached to the CAN bus. Interestingly I stumbled across an unattached terminating 120 ohm resistor inside the connector for the DLC. Presumably they had designed the DLC to accept a new design including the CAN bus for upcoming years. By the way, this video came up as only 360p resolution, a little hard to read the details of your scope. Great demo, one to remember!

    This is weird, that i can agree with. Two replacement dashes dont work, but turns out that if you switch the pins in the connector, it suddenly works. Somewhere, between the center dash and the next CAN device are some wires that were reversed by the water infiltration crew. Im betting its in a connector. They switched CANH and CANL somewhere when cleaning/drying/lubing the water problem.

    • @eric49a
      @eric49a ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Or damaged the wire harness during the dash repair and accidentally got high and low mixed up when spicing them back together

    • @tonyfremont
      @tonyfremont ปีที่แล้ว

      @@eric49a exactly, someone swapped them somewhere. That seems more likely than something being wrong with two replacement parts. CAN is supposed to be resilient, but it doesn't take much to wreck communications on the bus. Being on the high speed bus, I'm kinda surprised there weren't some driveability issues from the multitude of packets driving the bus voltage in the wrong direction and talking over everything. Seems like the controller in the dash cluster should have removed itself from the bus. It surely could tell something was wrong; CANL should never be at a higher voltage potential than CANH.

    • @autodiagyt
      @autodiagyt ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics agreed, especially when supposedly the original issue was water damage. That usually gets a connector with crusties in it. The connector in the video looked perfect. The odds the wires got swapped somewhere is much better then the circuit board is wired wrong. I feel like Bernie missed a critical test here. Not like him at all so just goes to show nobody is perfect.

  • @petar443
    @petar443 ปีที่แล้ว

    There's technicians in the comments suggesting Mr Thompson missed "wiring problem", or "connector problem". Mr Thompson should have jumped all the pins from the module center dash to the connector by jumper wires , all but the two comm lines pin13 and pin26 and scope these two , from the module side while they are disconnected from the rest of the network in order to shut the mouths of "disbelievers". By looking at the comm diagram , the wires are spliced between the modules with no intermediate connectors. And if wiring were shorting together , i believe then even when the wires at the module were inverted to fix the current problem , the car would still have comm problems if problem was wires touching, but it did not , 100% proving the problem is the module transceiver. And just to say - Thank you mr Thompson for making this FREE content , such complex problems can be seen FOR FREE only at your channel without folks having to give away their hard earned money. Such studies and in depth information about the system could be only be seen on "National level training events". But this cost money, time and effort. Traveling around the country, planing holidays and giving money away in these difficult times.

    • @youutartur1104
      @youutartur1104 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is an intermediate connector. Its X15 on the left kick panel in the drivers side. It would absolutely not happen in the splice packs, which would be hard to do anyway because those splice packs are separated from each other. You would have to purposefully be an idiot to swap them across those splice packs. The left kick panel is very common for water, and eats at the body control module that also lives at X15. I would not doubt the problem is there. Good job finding the problem but I think a note should be taped to the back of the cluster that there is swapped CAN wires now, because I'm 1000% sure it's at X15.

    • @abdul-kabiralegbe5660
      @abdul-kabiralegbe5660 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some others in the comments raised the strong possibility of the 2 wires for the cluster having been swapped at another location during past repairs. That seems far more likely than a consistent manufacturer error.

    The manufacturer needs to be held responsible for this. I’m so tired of dealing with bullshit like this.
