Der erfahrene und gelehrte Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Ensemble im lebhaften Tempo und mit möglichst effektiver Dynamik. Alles ist wunderbar!

All of your Bach's interpretations, including and especially the cantatas, are the best versions I can find on the internet. You are amazing, thanks for all the work and passion you put in this titanic project!
Luca, I'm curious -- whom had you heard performing Bach cantatas before? I know it's a real issue: hearing wonderful music in bad performances really can (and does) make people think it's the music that's bad or dull.
I am in exactly the same category! As a pianist and harpsichordist I have played and enjoyed my share of Bach, but I always took a pass at the cantatas ... until the NBS and All of Bach came along. Now I am in the process of re-listening to all of them!

To add to what I said previously, I find the vocal line quite beautiful. Bach’s melodies have a simple unpretentious “folk” quality that balances nicely in my ears with other more ornamental style found elsewhere.
@@declamatory There are quite a few of them in this neck of the woods. This ensemble actually has three female altos between its members. So it’s a matter of choice.
@@declamatory That is quite a subject, and there are quite a few people that know a lot more about that than I do. But here’s the short version. In Bach’s time generally male voices were used for alto in this kind of music, either men singing falsetto or boys. Historically informed performance, the tradition in which the Netherlands Bach Society is deeply rooted, chooses to keep close to what we know about how the music was performed in the time it was conceived. A lot of choices regarding instruments, the size of the ensemble and the performance itself are made on that basis. Therefore you can see several instruments that are different from the 20th century versions, for instance.
Absolutely magnificent performance! Herr Bach would have thoroughly enjoyed hearing this, I'm sure. Thank you for all of the hard preparatory work that went into making this possible for the whole world to enjoy. NBS is amazing.

This cantata composed by Bach is magnificent not only for the musical harmony as it was composed as for the fantastic connection it makes to the unbelievable and divine choir that accompanies it. it is a composition that only an outstanding musician could have written. Elegance, grace and subtle beauty are admirable. Bravissimo!!!
What fabulous music, what incredible voices, what sonority, what sublime cadence. This cantata could only be composed by an extraordinary musician whose musical virtuosity is sublime with a melodic sense of the greatest ever known. The orchestration is flawless. Viva Bach and his lovely and glorious music. Bravissimo for this amazing recording.
This performance is sublime, AND perfectly executed. I miss Jos van Veldhoven. There is something he brings to these works that many others, though good, cannot match. And the interviews with him are the best!

I thought l loved cantata #35 best but now favor #34 place, especially as performed by the Bach Foundation. The harmonies displayed in #34 display Bach as a master of melody as well as of counterpoint. Too much can’t be said about either cantata. They are masterpieces for all time. The mustached counter-tenor in the Netherlands #34 version in a superior performance shows a particularly sweet tonality, an unusual quality for a counter-tenor.

Thanks for the suggestion. We are looking into the possibilities for adding subtitles, but so far we have chosen not to do this, as this is a very time consuming task (and we are limited in time and budget). But we can see the benefits, so we will explore the possibilities.

Sorry that I can't answer this in German, but if your questions is why the choir is placed as three groups of SATB singers (as opposed to the usual SSSAAATTTBBB in one group), that seems to have been Bach's practice -- and the practice more generally in the 17th and early 18th centuries in Germany and Italy.

But sad that the video director is so completely incompetent. 0'46 extreme closeup of a bass scroll hiding a trumpet player 1'00 pointless extreme closeup of half a violin 1'56 bunch of pointless closeups of individual singers, giving no sense at all of a real choir and how the singers integrate with each other and with the conductor and players 2'38, 3'10, 5'03 violinist's knuckles 0'10, 0'35 oboist's knuckles 7'57 flutist's knuckles 16'10 somebody's arm 8'29 backs of 2 music stands 15'45 extreme closeup of chandelier 16'11 chandelier invading frame from right 17'02 magnificent shot of 4 people doing nothing - endless stupid headshots in recitatives, as if the viewer is staring at the singer from one foot away. - all that cutting, zooming, and camera movement every few seconds, as if the music is boring and needs to be made exciting with constant distractions. At 11'11 we're allowed a rare moment to just watch a singer sing without interference or distraction; the director must have missed that and forgot to cut it in pieces like everything else. And why not leave a little breathing space at the beginning and end, instead of just chopping as close to the music as possible? It would be so nice to see the musicians communicating and preparing to begin together, and to have a moment of peace when the music is over. Fire that bum video director who doesn't know the difference between Bach and a Tom Cruise movie, and hire someone who understands and cares about the music.
It's hard to comprehend how a person could listen to this splendid, moving performance and come away, not inspired or uplifted, but energized to spew vitriol and contempt in the form of a minute-by-minute series of videographical grievances. These great performances are provided free of charge for the world to enjoy. Attacking a not-for-profit that strives to make the best of its resources makes you little more than a petty, entitled, bully.

- all that cutting, zooming, and camera movement every few seconds, as if the music is boring and needs to be made exciting with constant distractions.
At 11'11 we're allowed a rare moment to just watch a singer sing without interference or distraction; the director must have missed that and forgot to cut it in pieces like everything else.
And why not leave a little breathing space at the beginning and end, instead of just chopping as close to the music as possible? It would be so nice to see the musicians communicating and preparing to begin together, and to have a moment of peace when the music is over.
Fire that bum video director who doesn't know the difference between Bach and a Tom Cruise movie, and hire someone who understands and cares about the music.

It's hard to comprehend how a person could listen to this splendid, moving performance and come away, not inspired or uplifted, but energized to spew vitriol and contempt in the form of a minute-by-minute series of videographical grievances. These great performances are provided free of charge for the world to enjoy. Attacking a not-for-profit that strives to make the best of its resources makes you little more than a petty, entitled, bully.
