The Steam Elephant

  • Steam Elephant was a six-wheeled locomotive of approximately standard gauge with a centre-flue boiler having two vertical cylinders of about 9 inches (229 mm) x 24 inches (610 mm) set into its top centreline. The cylinders drove slide bar mounted beams which turned crankshafts driving the axles through 2:1 reduction gears between the frames. It had a tall, tapering chimney, the lower part being surrounded by a feedwater heater. It would have weighed about 7.5 tons and had a top speed of around 4.5 miles per hour (7 km/h) and a load capacity of about 90 tons over a short distance.
    It is now considered[2] to have been designed by John Buddle and William Chapman for Wallsend Colliery on the north bank of the River Tyne in 1815 using metal components supplied by Hawks of Gateshead. It appears originally not to have been very successful at Wallsend, probably due to lack of adhesion on the wooden rails there, nor on trial at Washington. Following the introduction of iron rails at Wallsend, it had a working life there longer than many contemporaneous locomotives, until at least the mid-1820s.
    There is evidence[2] that it was then rebuilt for use at the Hetton collieries, working there for a further decade.

    I wish it was filmed by a cameraman whose goal was to document how the engine worked rather that being artistic and evocative.

    What a wonderful machine - a sort of half way house between Hedley's Puffing Billy and 'his' sister Wylm Dilly and Stephenson's Locomotion. Thanks for putting it back, and never mind the brickbats - I'm grateful to both the cameramen and the engineers who make these replicas of lost or forgotten pioneering machines for our enjoyment

    Really enjoyed watching the vid especially as i worked on this project, supplying the "Patterns" for the Cylinders and Wheels. Most of the work was done by Dorothea Whaley Bridge, working initially from a print of a painting.

    The music is completely unnecessary and distracting. The sound of the loco working would be much more interesting. I was also very disappointed not to see good views of the entire side of the loco working. I'm an engineer and the full side view, including the connecting rods, cranks, etc. would be far more interesting than a few stupid views of birds, etc. The views from the carriage behind the loco also show nothing interesting. The loco itself is fascinating and reminiscent of "Puffing Billy", another loco from this period, and the workmanship is superb.

      I am not a Railway enthusiast, this video was my person memory of a visit to a museum where I found one of the exhibits very interesting. This was never intended as a documentary video for railway enthusiast. I agree entirely about the music my choice as a background was not allowed by You Tube, this is one they sent me as a copyright free track. I'm sorry if less than 2 seconds of stupid birds spoiled your enjoyment of a 5.24 minute video.

    Interesting video and explanation. But what an AFWFULL music! Some period music would have been a better choice, by far... Remember that 1815 was Beethoven's lifetime. What would you think about the Jupiter Symphony ?

  • @MrGlockwood

    Hi SteamCrane .. it is one of the many job that I will get round to eventually. I agree it is not the best musical track, I chose it when You Tube blocked my original background music. I chose it from a collection of even worse tracks that You Tube suggested. I thought the beat echoed the engine.

    I love this locomotive, great to watch and a fine piece of work to bring a forgotten engine back to life. Is the "Experiment" coach a replica of a old one, and why "Experiment"? Is it just a name, or was it really an experiment? Was it to see if the public would choose to go by rail, or pay more for a bit of shelter? I will HAVE to visit sometime and see it all! Many thanks.

    • @MisterTalkingMachine
      @MisterTalkingMachine 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't believe the original 'experiment' has survived, it was indeed an Experiment by Stephenson, which became the first passenger car. Since in the Stockton-darlington railway, where it belonged, was not very practical from the begining (the fault lied on the railway though), and there would have been not much of a reason to keep it when better passenger cars began to be built.
      It was an experiment to see if steam railways could transport passengers in a satisfactory way, the Stockton-Darlington was still just a tramway for coal wagons pulled by horses, Locomotion N° 1 could be hired to replace the horse on the tramway, though it did carry passengers from time to time.

    • @CaptBubble
      @CaptBubble 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MisterTalkingMachine Thanks for that. I have just completed a mechanical diorama called Sleepy Hill which includes a whimsical train, a bit like some of Emett's drawings and models. The coach looks more like Emett than Stephenson, but I thought that the name "Experiment" would suit it nicely and added it on!

      @MrGlockwood  10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You are absolutely right, at the time I uploaded this video You Tube had a copyright policy and would not allow my chosen music even though I tried several pieces. I ended up having to use one of their listed pieces of music, most of which were worst than this one. I eventually chose this because the beat echoed the rhythm of the engine.

    When I first made the video of the Steam Elephant I tried several pieces of music but You Tube copyright policy would not allow me to use my choice. Since then the policy has changed so maybe I can redo the video and submit it again with a nicer or more appropriate choice. I will put it on my very long things to do list.

They gave me a list of copyright free music and this track was the best on offer so you can imagine what the rest of the tracks sounded like. I dislike the music but chose this because I thought it echoed the rythme of the engine. I do intend at some point to re-do the footage.
