Don’t want to get too carried away but right now it feels like the pre Euro 2020 group, building something over a couple of years, positive play and a real good balance. It feels good and looks fluid. Keep the positive vibe!
Good points from the boys about this Italy team and about the 3-5-1-1, and how Italy needs to find the best second striker for this system. Maldini could be the solution, but I still want to see some others tried there too. Im thinking Orsolini could play that role, or Baldanzi, (or yes Chiesa). Glad Retegui is looking good, he reminds me of Christian Vieri but right footed. Barella will find it difficult to get into the midfield, the way Frattesi, Tonali and Ricci are playing! Also Cambiaso is an underrated player for Italy, I think he has been doing well.
I’m really glad Di Lorenzo scored 2 goals. There’s too much hate around him. He’s maybe not the most intelligent player in terms of defending awareness, but he’s probably the fittest European player in last 6-7 years. Show some respect for the Serie A & Euro champion.
He sucks. He’s old and trophy don’t mean crap. You need the best player available on the team and he isn’t. Just lucky that his former coach is picking him.
The performance has changed, cause Spalletti finally allows the players to play like they do in their club-teams. Then now we are playing with Ricci, Cambiaso, Tonali. Retegui and Dimarco have grown! Calafiori is a personality! And also Piselli, Maldini, Kean, Udogie, Lucca are great young players! Dimarco is fenomenal!
I’m not sure if Spalletti has fixed Italy or it’s just that the team played with fear throughout the Euros and now they’re just relaxed because they know they’ve really got nothing to lose and they’re just having fun and playing relaxed. You can see how clean and confident the passes are now, and during the Euros all of the mistakes. Especially with all of Dimarco’s crosses. He’s known for that foot and he’s showing it now. But look at what he did literally the first minute of the first game of the Euros. Keep up the great analysis ragazzi! Forza, Bari, Lol! 🤍❤️
There’s simply too much games during the season. Players get exhausted both physically and mentally. Among top 5 Serie A is a league with the most ACL injuries (13!) in 2024. It’s a serious epidemic and no one speaks about this in Italy even they lost 2 generational talents because of ACL (Zaniolo and Chiesa). The situation will be even worse after the new club world cup and all these additional matches in UCL and EL. I really feel sorry for a players like Lautaro. His not injured but has been playing for 5 years without a break all over the planet and you can clearly see that he’s chronically exhausted. Malinovskyi, Zapata, Scamacca, Scalvini, Cambiaghi, Ferguson, Bremer, Bennacer, Florenzi… so many terrible injuries in Serie A.
If Chiesa doesn’t play consistently with Liverpool, I mean playing starting XI, he’s not going to start for the Azzurri. At best he gets a call-up under Spalletti and I agree with that decision. You have to play in your club consistently in my opinion to get to play for the national team. So we have to see as the season proceeds. Chiesa, Zaniolo, Maldini, Raspadori and Brescianini (I think will do really well behind the striker). Out of these 5, I’d go with Brescianini. He was out for 2 weeks. His decision-making on the ball is far superior.
I have a good feeling for Italy's future (let's say between 2028 and 2034/2036). What Spalletti accomplishes right now is going to work in the long run.
i agree, but it will require consistency. We need players like bastoni, calafiori, dimarco, cambiaso, tonali, retegui, barella, ricci, buongiorno, and scalvini to always be in mid-good form over the next 8 years
Not for the next international round but id like to see Baldanzi tried in the 10 role over the next year. He needs to play more at Roma but I can see him as an option. In the meantime time, Frattesi needs to start so if Barella is back id play Frattesi in that freedom role cos hes so dangerous with his runs into rhe box. The 1 behind doesn't have to be a Totti number 10, we dont have that player available at the moment so we need to make do
@@alexpalermo4738 I have to be honest and say that I haven't seen Liberali play but ill keep an eye out for him now. Theres also Pafundi who did well for the under 20s. Italy have good young talent coming through, just need to get them playing regular at club level
Mike was referring to the seeding. If Italy get 1 more point out of their last 2 Nation League games, they will be put into the top pot for the World Cup qualifying draw. This often results in not having a top team, like Spain (for the 2018 WC), in a qualifying group in which only the winner will automatically go to the World Cup. Despite getting top seeding for the 2022 WC qualifiers, we still messed up twice against the Swiss in the group, and had to play North Macedonia (and Portugal had be beat NM) and we all know how that ended. What helps Italy more this time is the expansion - from 32 to 48 teams - of the 2026 World Cup.
Amazing to think Italy smashed Switzerland 3-0 just 3 years ago and then this same Swiss side then became a thorn in Italy's side not once, but twice (WC 22 qualifying, Euro 2024).
Italia is a work in progress....Fruits of Spalletti work showing....Let's see what happens in November in Belgium and home to France needing 1 point to finish top 2 as a top seed in World Cup Draw!!!!!
Didn’t all your panel want him fired. When has Italy ever scored more than 4 goals? They are played very positive soccer throughout this tournament. They would’ve beat Belgium if pellegrini wasn’t so selfish. Much better play and u need to give credit to spaletti.
Mike explaining the clutch and benefits of nations league had everyone confused. lol Italy has a style again and identity. Settled on formation that suits players and looking fresh confident and hungry. Love it
Frattesi is far more effective playing in central midfield. He reminds me of Frank Lampard with the timing of his runs, ability to ghost into space and finish effectively. Frattesi himself has said that he doesn't want to play higher up the pitch as a classic number 10. Barella does have the technical ability, vision and dribbling skills to play just behind the striker. His incredible engine would also allow Italy to press even more effectively from the front. It's a tricky decision for Spalletti as both players are now impossible to drop when fully fit. Perhaps Spalletti will do both what you and I say and have the players swapping their positions during the game?
@dangiambrone7350 no Frattesi is more comfortable up with the striker, inzaghi doesn't use it much the last season because he want that he play more down Now he has more stamina, but he is better up, free, and running between lines
The players had the motivation and cared at the Euros but Spalletti overloaded the players with information, plus he underestimated the physicality required at international level a midfield needs. He has learned quickly and the players well suited and are fully onboard. Italy are doing a great job🇮🇹🙌
If u finish 1st in your group in nations league you get automatically seeded to go to the world cup. This applies to european nations league tournament only
There are numerous differences between what we saw at Euro 24 and now; more desire, energy, organisation, cohesion, discipline, consistency, imagination.... Spalletti made the smart decision to keep things simple, i.e. pick a system and style and stick with it, don't tinker with the lineup all the time and systems during play, don't use word salads, overload and confuse the hell out of the players. There are still question marks as to who should be our first choice keeper as Spalletti likes playing out from the back, but Gigi is still uncomfortable with his feet; Di Lorenzo as a central defender - yes he scored two goals, but he makes too many mistakes and contributes to our shocking defending from set-pieces. Calafiori could comfortably play as the right-sided central defender which will allow Buongiourno to play and give the short team some needed height; Raspadori is more lively than Pellegrini in the trequartista role, however we need more quality from him. Maldini showed some very promising signs, with Pafundi and Liberali already looking like they could do a great job as a number 10. Chiesa; how does he get back into this squad, let alone team with this system??
At the moment I would also put Baldanzi in the mix for the number ten role. Both Pafundi and Liberali would be interesting possibilities as well but I think their lack of playing time in first tier football will cause Spalletti to look elsewhere.
Folks... When we said bring the table back, we meant a real table 🤔 Then, throw up a smart board, show the highlights, break it down and we're cooking 👌
I hope im wrong, but dont see chiesa in that 10 role. With this system, i see chiesa have a hard time getting in. Baldanzi or palfundi would be my choice to try for the next 2 games.
It is not his position, but I would try Frattesi in a support striker false 10 role off of Retegui. Barella is our best midfideler and he takes his spot back. Tonali is our engine and Ricci is our holding player, so this leaves Frattesi on the bench. However, Frattesi is our best goal scorer, so I would try him there especially in a friendly to see how it plays out. It kills two birds with one stone. If it doesn't work, he will be used as an impact sub but Barella and Tonali should always be on the field. It'll be tough to get him playing time and we need him for his darting runs, constant pressure, and goals. If not, please do not play Pellegrini there anymore, he should be the other backup midfield player along with Fagioli. Jack played very well and I would definitely like to see Chiesa try to win that position too. There are some intriguing youth players that can play it in the future such as Gnonto, Baldanzi, Pafundi, and Liberali.
Yea what the person above me said. Get a Vix account, it’s $4.99/month. I kept seeing people say Via Play on TH-cam but when I tried it said it wasn’t available where I live (and I live in the US). So depending on where you live, you could try that too.
Carnesecchi would be a great second goalkeeper, Gabbia is also a great player .. Tonali, Di Marco and Cambiaso have changed the team. I don’t like Spalletti but he has corrected and he is in the right direction ❤❤
Real test will come in WC26 qualifiers, Nations League is truly meaningless in comparison to that. At the moment it is looking as though Spalletti truly did not have enough time to build a team for Euro 2024 - he was in charge less than 10 months by the moment the tournament kicked off. Hopefully it's just that and he's on his way to greatness... contrary to a lot of the nonsense heard four months ago there is quality in this squad.
Get back Verratti. Midfield on the middle Tonali - Verratti - Ricci/Barella Give Verratti a chance to show he playing in East hasnt slowed him down. Get him to couple games and you will see hes still the same as last 10 years

The answer is simple, he gave up on his tactics and let them play a back 3, which many of them are familiar with.
