Exploring Kaeo, My Van Tour & 2000 Year Old Tane Mahuta

  • First stop is Kaeo to see where my friend Nicola is from. She's currently in Mexico and has a TH-cam channel herself: La Jirafita. Check it out.
    Next stop, my van to see where I sleep, why I chose that method of travel and how the inside looks.
    Finally end off the video at the oldest Kauri tree in the world: Tane Mahuta. Thought to be 2000 years old and under threat of eminent death from a mystery disease killing off this particular species of trees.
    Thanks for watching and subscribing.

      Hola Josè! It really is a slice of paradise living here right now. Our cases in the community are zero so life here as we know it is normal apart from not having international travel or tourism coming into the country. Face covers are not required either, it almost seems like there is no pandemic whatsoever. Hope it’s safe where you are, take care 😀 Saludos de NZ 🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿

    What an incredible tree! It is so sad the trees are dying from a disease that apparently is man-caused? It looks fairly tropical in that park? Does it get cold this time of year at all? Mexico... YES! I finally purchased my ticket for February, I hope things are better by then. I shall make the best of it no matter. I feel like I have lost all of my language skills so each time I go it's like starting over again. Oh well :D Life is Good!

    • @FinnDelMundoTravel
      @FinnDelMundoTravel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Conpraste tu boleto a mexico!!! Estoy super celoso!! What part will you be staying in?
      The tree was surreal and something I had only even known from photos or videos. Seeing in person had me in awe. The Kauri Dieback disease has unknown origins but is found in the soil. Trampers can kill the trees accidentally by walking in an infected forest and then walking with dirty boots in unaffected forests. With that said, I think birds are just as much to blame, and other animals like rats and possums which roam the forests at night. Sad really, I think Tane Mahuta will be dead as a dodo I’m the next few years.

    • @hivolco151
      @hivolco151 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FinnDelMundoTravel I did a little research on the kauri tree, and I am quite amazed!! Since I have always enjoyed trying to grow rare plants or trees, I tried to find seeds, and sadly it would be nothing short of a miracle for me to get them quickly enough to germinate! Apparently like many tropicals or rare trees, the seeds must be sown very shortly after they fall. I discovered that Mango trees grow nicely from seed but must be sown before they dry out after being extracted from the fruit.... anyways.. you should plant them EVERYWHERE! :)

    • @FinnDelMundoTravel
      @FinnDelMundoTravel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hivolco151 you probably know more than me about the Kauris!! 😅 Another tree that grows here who’s seeds are often found in pockets of travellers returning to their home country are that of the Manuka tree. The honey bees produce a health honey product from the manuka flowers and it’s become a popular product around the world. Not quite sure if they grow outside of NZ or not, they are possibly in Australia. That forest was in Northland so I’d say it’s semi-tropical in nature 😃

    • @hivolco151
      @hivolco151 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FinnDelMundoTravel Manuka would probably grow in Mexico! The Mexican people use a variety of Honey products for medicine, I was the fortunate recipient of a bottle of golden honey from the hills near the volcano.. it was great! OH.. by the way, thanks for giving a shout out to let people know about Nicola's channel she is hilarious and cool at the same time!! @@hivolco151 isn’t she the coolest!? And really down to earth, lots of personality and never afraid going head first into a situation or opportunity when it pops up. I was inspired when she began making her videos because her Spanish wasn’t 100% perfect (like mine) but she didn’t care and continued sharing her experiences with the world. Now her Spanish is so good and the videos she makes are always cheerful and show lots of social interaction within Mexico! That’s what I will bring more of in 2021.

    Perfect music for the intro to The Beast Tree.
    Is the wood from that species good for BBQ?

    • @FinnDelMundoTravel
      @FinnDelMundoTravel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Rick!! Haha, that wood is 100% protected and no longer logged. It’s almost impossible to find furniture made from kauri these days. Major fines or imprisonment would be an outcome for chopping down a native tree in NZ. Usually a small fine would be 20k but could go up to us much as 100k. I really should have explained this more in the clip - I will know what to add next time I venture into a native forest 😁

      @@FinnDelMundoTravel what about trees that have died ?

    • @FinnDelMundoTravel
      @FinnDelMundoTravel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RickFidelisReed oh I see! In that case there are special exceptions for branches that have snapped and fallen to the forest floor. Only holders of special permits can collect the dead branches and this is usually limited (again, near impossible to ever consider bothering). But currently with this disease wiping out the Kauri tree population, leaving the track or roadside is prohibited anyway and enforced with fines/imprisonment. The giant trees that do die are seen as sacred and left to rot.
