Thanks for watching, everyone! We tried to include the Sega CD launch titles as well, but had difficulty getting the emulator to work. Next up: Nintendo 64!
@@Autofill120 the three button controller is more comfortable, and I suppose more iconic, but six button is still objectively superior, functionality is still the most important aspect of a controller. It’s why the SNES got first dibs on Street Fighter II.
Sega CD launch titles were infamously mediocre. But then again, western Dreamcast launch aside, Sega weren't known for strong system launches. Sega of Japan should have gone out of the home console business a long time ago... But they lucked into associating with people far more talented than they were.
Space Harrier II is brilliant. The game really clicks when you learn to judge depth and line up shots far out in the distance before the enemies can become a threat. And the boss fights are a real rush too.
I appreciate y'all taking the time to be as accurate with the launch titles as possible. Obviously i can only speak for myself but, you could basically show the entire gensis/mega drive game library and say it was the launch games and i wouldn't question it
That Sega intro gave me goosebumps, man... The Mega Drive was my first ever console, got it from my cousin who was replacing it with a PS1 at the time along with Sonic, Sonic 2, Streets of Rage, X-Men, Echo The Dolphin (still have nightmares) and Micro Machines Military. So many memories.
Same here... The first mega drive game I ever played was world of illusion starring Mickey mouse and Donald duck from then on I was hooked haha later went on to the play all the classics on the system but that first game was excuse the pun a game changer for me
I'm appreciating that you're digging up the old GameRankings scores... It was such a superior site to MetaCritic it's not even funny. The wrong site was closed...
I doubt it has ever been said before but your commentary reminds me of a cross between David Mitchell and Greg Davies. I always laugh out loud in your videos. Amazing
Growing up, my family would always go to this little place called Kent Pizza Garden in Kent, CT and they had two arcade games; Altered Beast and Golden Axe. Golden Axe was by far my favorite. But, hundreds of dollars in quarters definitely went into Altered Beast as well and I still remember it fondly. I don't mind playing it today and it's definitely mostly nostalgia-fueled love, I will admit. The main problem, in my mind, is it suffers from being made in the arcade age where games were made intentionally difficult so that they could get you to continue pumping in quarters. If it would have been designed to be easier and you could get farther and had fun power-ups to your beast giving them fun weapons, I think it would be much more fun than it is.
I played Virtua Racing once as a child and if was flipping amazing. First fully 3d driving game I had ever played. I didn't know that there was a special chip in the cartridge but I did know that my parents wouldn't buy me it.
I loved the Genesis growing up. Sadly, most Genesis games have a hard time enduring the test of time. Brawlers were a blast in the 90s, but just... clunky now. Most of the platformers were... fine, but there are just so many that only the best of the best from the era hold up. Largely, the Genesis Library was built around flashy, fast, instant gratification action titles, while the SNES began to dip into games with massive exploration that would take many play sessions to get through. Sonic, Ristar, Gunstar Heroes, The Adventures of Batman and Robin (Genesis) Contra Hard Corps all hold up quite well. Shinobi 3 and Vectorman are a tier down, but still good. Toejam & Earl was a neat change of pace from standard Genesis fare. I haven't played enough of Phantasy Star 4 to give a good opinion, it might be fine. Phantasy Star 1-3 start off horrendous. Oh, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is fantastic, but you can play Puyo Puyo on anything these days.
I watch very few TH-cam channels, couple of wrestling and the occasional computer games channel. Prefer to get my sports news from sky and thats about all I'm interested in. I would just like to say, after trying various channels and watching some rubbish over the years, Ben and Peter are 2 of only 3 presenters I've found on TH-cam that could genuinely make the switch to mainstream media. They are articulate, interesting and enjoyable to listen to. In a generation where anyone with a camera and a quiet space can become a presenter I can pay the duo no higher compliment. I don't like that fact that channels put on hosts who are not capable of the job and would stand no chance of making it in the profession outside TH-cam. Love to you both 💙. Have a great weekend.
Please make another video series about playing the last few games of the consoles before they were discontinued. There would be lots of sports time and even some radical cool bird man for the Nintendo 64.
That Last Battle game seems like it runs on the same engine as Altered Beast. Even the impact sounds are the same, they just changed the sprite models.
"Last Battle" appears to be loosely based on the Tentei Arc of Fist of The North Star. Also, Ken kicking enemies aside without actually making contact may be due to poor design, but it's not that far off from what he's capable of, since Ken can use Ki attacks. Though his are a bit more fatal than Goku's per say.
I remember the price tag of virtua racing being £70, which was a ridiculous amount. I traded in 8 games, including 2 copies of altered beast (thanks nan) and £35... it had the nerve to say there were 6 tracks - but it was 3 and 3 in reverse, and the synthesised scream of 'timmme bonnnus' or whatever it was was grating but damn did I put stupid hours into that game. Massive cartridge, smelt of happy when you took it out after 10 hours - 87%
What about a Ranking every "playing every X launch game in X year" ranked from worst to best video? You take the average of every launch line-up, ranking them through that. It would be awesome :)

Virtua Racing DX is my favorite iteration of the game. Having not seen nor played an arcade cabinet in at least 2 decades, VR DX is the version that in my opinion most closely matches the arcade experience. The version released for the Genesis was just too clunky and slow even with the SVR chip on the cartridge's board. Something strange about Virtua Racing however is that every time it's been released cars and tracks are either added or taken away. As of yet there isn't a release of the game that features everything.
Now that Revenge Of Shinobi’s revamped, maybe we’ll start seeing it from now on, along with Super Hang-On and World Championship Soccer, both good games also.
I bought the Sega Genesis when it was new. I had so much more fun playing these games back then than watching this video in 2021. Now I remember why I don't watch Triple Jump videos. Can I get a refund on the 18 minutes I spent watching this video?
