I picked up a 2nd hand Ultranova the other day. I had no idea how capable it was. I was just looking for a decent 3-octave midicontroller to control my Slim Phatty, but buy was I surprised when I learned what it can do. At the moment I'm patching the Slim Ohatty through the inputs of the Ultranova so I can use the FX section on the Moog, but the Ultranova is a great polyphonic companion to the classic Moog sound.
The Ultranova is unbeatable for the price. You can find them used for $400 or less, which is incredible for what you get. I also have much love for DSI stuff, and I'm glad this video was more about what they could do as opposed to what is "better" or not. Nicely done.
My first synth came down to a choice between an UN and a Korg R3. I opted for the R3, which was probably a bad call in retrospect. The UN seems like it has a pretty nice and straightforward workflow, whereas I never got along very well with the comparatively clunky R3.
I have a Ultranova and a Prophet 08. It's great! So many sounds come from both, and the best part is that I run the Prophet 08 audio out through the UN to get the effects from the UN! The wavetables are really awesome on the UN, especially with the interpolation turned down. (My dream would be getting the Prophet VS!) Now, can you play with the filter on the Prophet 12 through the Ultranova as a MIDI contoller? I believe this might get you no stepping. Or would it get worse because it's going through 127 fixed points but being controlled with a high precision filter knob? I would imagine that would be an easy thing to set up.
I'd also note , this isn't about directly comparing how one saw wave sounds compared to the next. The article noted in the description better explains the purpose of the video. Thanks for watching
@Iono I think I was drunk when I wrote that 3 years ago. Thankfully I no longer do that. I do now own a Sequential Rev 2 and a Novation Summit. Love them both. I'm about to watch your video in a minute, those both seem like great synths! My friend owns the mini.
I have the UltraNova and the Bass Station ii. Once you start understanding "synth" and spend a good amount of time creating your own sounds, the UN is amazing. And yes, the stock patches are very digital sounding, but with a ton of tweaking, you can get fake analog gorgeousness. With that said, I really want a DSI OB6 module for scoring film. lol.
Another great thing about the UN - it can double as an audio interface and a simple mixer by running other synth thru the audio in. Every modern synth made should have this future. Makes setting up small live rigs a whole hell of a lot easier.
I main use the audio in/thru as a mixer to run another synth for live settings. Works really well in this application, and frees up a space on a small mixing board.
Don”t forget to mention the free mac/pc software for Ultranova where you can do all the patch editing on a big screen/monitor/tv instead of the small buit in mouse cinema. ;) Novation provides really good support for all their devices.
what you get into @ 14:00 is really good. the "traditional" waveforms are definitely unique. +10 for the "shark fin wave." spot-on. fortunately for me I like how they sound. if you ever get an explanation why this happens I'd love to hear it.
One simple parameter at UN osc section makes it pretty cool i think, "hardness". It lets you extract upper harmonics and unlike filter you dont lose the volume. So its kinda like extremely steep filter but it creates different timbres.
If Novation came out with an UltraNova II with an OLED display, full modulation capabilities, and improved DSP, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I already own the UltraNova and love it - it can hold its own with vintage analogs right up until you need something really nasty and grungy (which is where my MicroBrute steps in).
? couldn't disagree more. my Ultranova has probably my favorite key bed out of all of my synths and the engine is fantastic. love to hear how you back that claim up...
I would rather get a blofeld, or perhaps the supernova II With keys. I am impressed With the modulation Matrix of the Pro 12, but i dont like its sound.
interesting, one would think that such an expensive modul as the P12 would be SOOO much better than the much cheaper Ultranova, but seems not....thanks, going in thoughts about the Ultranova, one demo-ex for 400€ here where i live (sweden)
Great run through. I would maybe like to say though, that the Novation "Flagship" could actually be considered to be the Supernova 2. It can stack up to 8 separate parts, which makes it a monster. But it doesn't do Wavetables...
Curious to know what you used to create the inset on the screen that displays the wave shapes. I've tried a few apps, but have found nothing with as much accuracy and detail.
Mark K. I believe in this one I'm using wavewindow. Be careful how you use it as it can easily be very inaccurate. It depends on what you are viewing and with what interface etc.
Ken Flux Pierce Fluxwithit Only reason I ask is I have a mininova and a matrixbrute already, I might get another poly but it sounds like there's overlap with the prophet 12 and Mininova. Deciding between prophet 12, Rev 2, and Deepmind 12.
Villan Bond I ended up selling the p12 recently, it is a cool synth but ultimately just didn’t keep me thrilled. The deepmind is a very different beast. Very nice though. Hard to say what would work for you as synths are a very personal preference
I love the Novation Ultranova but comparing it to a DS Prophet is a little unfair but this video does bring up good points about the UN's versatility and price value. If you really dive in on it, then you can really push its sound.
I wouldn't say unfair... I more thought it would be fun as the more I grew to know my p12 the more similarities I noticed. Imho the ultranova was and still is a surprisingly deep synth. Did you check out the article? Thanks for watching and commenting.
I think my point is really that analog will blow analog modeling out of the water sound wise but the UN does defiantly make up in its features, interesting comparing them though and finding similarities. I have not read the article...when I am on youtube.com I am there for the videos lol..@@Fluxwithit
@@bluturtal sure but the video is just a small part of the article as per the description ;) imho the analog aspect of the prophet is it's weaker link...
Ya that certainly doesn't mean that im going to read it though.. So send that memo to your pretentious winky face. I can't see how the prophet being analog can possibly be a down fall. All I'm saying in so many words is Ultranova good, prophet better. I dont know how some one can argue that. I do love the touch mode on the UN though.
It's just the resolution on the knobs, though, You can get 100% smooth sweeps, and anything else, on the P12 using any of the dozens of modulation routings.
Well... that's kinda the point right? Sweeping the filter with the knob sucks and isn't smooth compared to the UN, very noticeable and something you'd think they would make sure didn't happen on an instrument of that quality. You should not be limited to smooth filter sweeps through modulation only. My opinion of course, doesn't make it a horrible instrument but that stepping is evident.
For sure! If really slow, knob-based filter sweeps are your jam, you might like the UN better (and save some money in process!). Personally, I never do that, so it's not an issue for me. I modulate everything on the P12 using all the envelopes and LFOs (or the mod wheel and pressure strips, which also mitigate the stepping), and then play with both hands, or use one hand to trigger hardware effects and loops. On all synths I prefer to use modulation to filter sweep just because I don't trust the stability of my hands in all situations and events. Just depends on how you use the instruments, and what's important to you. However, the stepping knob-based filter sweeps on the P12 is not something that would ever prevent me from recommending the synth to someone who wants the best sound design tool on the market today.
+Daniel Davis it's something that I would inform someone about... The good out weights the bad on the p12 for sure. To me it's just a raw sticking point about dsi synths as they charge a premium for the build quality of the synths yet skimp on low res encoders. This could be easily fixed at the production level and add negligible cost to production. Not a deal breaker, but does irk me.
For sure. If that's something that is important to you, then I can understand it being a sticking point. :) I think I can count on 1 hand the number of times over the last 28 years that I've done a knob-based filter sweep by hand in a live performance. :) It's not even something I ever think about.

I think Peak is a really awesome synth. hope to get one in the Lab soon. filters are a nice match to the oscillators in that one.
The note played using P12 sounds 1 octave lower than using Ultranova. It's hard to compare. Notes are in different octaves.

I cover that in the video and article, it is a virtual sync that adds harmonica by an exponent of 15
There is a vsync parameter and a hard parameter at osc section. One adds harmonics one subtracts
