The 2030's will see many advances in our understanding of the solar system's icy moons. ESA's JU.I.C.E, NASA's Europa clipper and Dragonfly, and other projects, are now intended at finding evidence of life. I look forward to future episodes of Kosmo reporting on their findings..
The "dragonfly" drone should be able to withstand being submerged in the bodies of liquid or at least, some drone attached to it via umbilical cable to be dragged through the liquid thereby gaining real info on the liquid since dragonfly can survey everywhere else but the liquid!
Think about how dangerous it would be to do this in a helicopter. Now think about how ridiculously dangerous it would be to do this with a pre-programmed robotic device at a distance where the turnaround time for any signal is 4+ hours. I don't think this will happen until we have humans in Titan orbit to oversee operations without that delay.
Thank you! Fascinating and informative. Just a heads-up: "Mare" is a Latin word meaning "sea." It therefore isn't pronounced as one would pronounce it as if one were speaking of a female horse. It is pronounced "mah-ray."
Burning question: If you brought a supply of oxygen to Titan, released it, and struck a match, would there be a combustion cascade that sets the whole planet on fire?
no but good theory tho but if titans atmosphere was actually oxygen that you could breath in then yeah you could do it or at least set the lakes in fire maybe not the whole MOON
I love anything dealing with Titan. But the Scale of the size of those rivers and seas had to have made the discovery of STATE SIZED BODIES OF LIQUID MADE THE SCIENTIST SPIT OUT THEIR COFFEE. But for Carl Sagan to figure that Titan had liquid methane before it was discovered is awesome.
For anyone who does not know, Kelvin and Celsius temperature scales are identical, they simply zero at different points. Absolute zero is 0 degrees K while the freezing point of fresh water is 0 C. Any change is identical for both. Of course K can never be a negative value.
Sorry to nitpick, but the views of Saturn in the sky are not possible, because a) Titan's orbital inclination is 0.3 degrees, meaning the rings would be pretty much edge-on all the time and b) Titan's atmospheric soup is so thick, you would probably not be able to see the Sun, let alone Saturn, ever.
@@Theodorus5 To quote the Wikipedia article on Titan's atmosphere: "The Huygens probe was unable to detect the direction of the Sun during its descent, and although it was able to take images from the surface, the Huygens team likened the process to "taking pictures of an asphalt parking lot at dusk"." It also mentions that the atmosphere is so thick, it reaches up more than 1000km high, and that humans could fly just by attaching wing-like devices to their arms and flapping them.
Hey! I got a question. Since we know that the Saturnian moon Titan has essentially flowing rivers and rains, and lakes, of what is essentially Zippo lighter fluid (hydrocarbons) and Everclear, just what types of sub-zero dinosaurs created all that? :)
All fossil fuels are made from hydrocarbons. However, not all hydrocarbons come from fossil fuels. You can have ethane and methane come from non-biological sources. Just as diamonds (pure carbon) are not necessarily formed from such fossil fuels either. Therefore, there are probably no sub-zero dinosaurs responsible for forming those hydrocarbon lakes on Titan. But wouldn't it be cool if we found some anyway? 😁
