I'm nonbinary and use they/them pronouns, and have worked in a variety of more conservative workplaces with very transphobic coworkers. I don't hide who I am, and I don't avoid interacting with my conservative coworkers, but I also don't correct them when they misgender me because it just isn't effective. I'm not going to change their opinions on trans people by policing their language, and it's a waste of energy on my end. What DOES happen though, is a lot of people tend to shift their perspectives just by knowing me. After a year of working together I had one 68 year old conservative man telling me "I like you...I don't know why, but I do." He sounded genuinely confused about liking me because hes used to hating people like me. To me that was more of a win than forcing him to use the right pronouns would have been.
Gianmarco posting at 2am Seattle time is the most consistent thing in my life. It's either a treat in the morning or a treat for my insomnia. Thank you, Gianmarco and team 🩷
Currently halfway through the pod, loving it so far, and I wanna say I understand sometimes feeling that no social progress has been made. It sucks seeing people do problematic stuff and still be successful and celebrated. While I'm only one person, I can say that seeing you and Russell care about social issues and being socially aware makes me happy to support y'all. I'm here every week not just because y'all are hilarious but also because I believe you're good people. And in a world that is dark, that can mean so much ❤️
Just a humble brag here - I was looking down when Gianmarco joked that he knows nothing about fossils but he knows about rockets, paused, and said "Jesus Christ." I KNEW that he'd looked at Russell and Russell didn't laugh! Went back to watch the moment just to enjoy it visually. Their dynamic is so funny! Love you guys!
What is “not hairy?” Gianmarco seems like the normal amount of hair for a dude. Now I’m just thinking about Frank in that Always Sunny episode where he’s shaved his entire body
It’s crazy how many of my interests have merged over the years as someone who’s been watching Dropout since before the sale, No Rolls Barred since the beginning of filming videos in person and Gianmarco for a few years now too. Now it’s all one big board-game-y, stand-up-y, comedy-y (?) mega interest. All roads lead to Rome and all online entertainment leads to comedians who are all friends with each other.
Chris Grace just makes me so happy. On the note about hateful language, I kind of feel like what turns people off the most from the left is the feeling that we & our political leaders are not genuine & calculated. So I feel like if we stop voicing when someone is saying something really offensive because we do not want to seem uncool, that will yield the same result because not being genuine just has a stench that people can smell a mile a way. I do not believe in policing language mercilessly or for policing’s sake, that is just stupid & unsustainable. But if someone is perpetuating violent hatred with their language (& it is worth the battle), then I don’t think that shrugging or trying to signal that we approve of it (when we do not) will just hurt progress ultimately. I hope that this makes sense (& I am not typing this angrily I just thought that it was worth commenting on their thoughtful discussion)
I loved the dropout show! I have a lot of thoughts about one of the discussion topics this episode. I think its so important to recognize that we are all flawed people capable or doing wrong. The view that only bad people do bad things creates so many assumptions and defensiveness and dismissal. A wrong action is also not more ok if you are viewed as a "good" person. It is accountability that matters most. Not self destructive shame, but acknowedging and changing what you do.
59:38 i experienced this phenomenon of realizing the limitations of my echo chamber recently. Most of what i consume and view is very trans rights very forward thinking progressive. Went to church and talked to some fine people my age (90s millennial) and had to concede for the sake of being civil face to face that "gender politics at school for young children is complicated" when they told me that's one of the reasons they home school. I was thinking to myself "wow am i a fraud or am i just appreciating the nuance of a diverse society that isn't ready for every radical change?" So I appreciate y'all touching on the topic
Chris describing at 26:30 why theater kids should go to Fringe, sent my ex-theater kid ass down an anxiety spiral and was a list of reasons of exactly why I don't want to go.
As someone who's lost a friend to suicide, I've always thought your related jokes were really funny! I can't speak for anyone else, but I think you do a great job of making sure that you and your actions are the punchline for jokes relating to trans identities and difficult topics like suicide, so it's never punching down at the other person or what they're going through.
oh the leg slapping acting thing! My theory is that's nerves emerging during a moment when you need to control your face, voice, and movements. It gets a bit of that energy out. But we do tend to pick up on that feeling even though it was expressed for only a moment.
Chris Grace on the podcast, that's actually really cool, ive been subscribed to his TH-cam since Superstore ended and i found his channel, really cool guy and real down to earth.
I totally understand Gianmarco's feelings about one man shows. There was this Netflix comedy special where this guy was really funny in the first half, and the second half spiraled into his life philosophy. I remember being so bored and annoyed by his philosophy. It wasn't really profound to me. To each their own I guess.
Can I recommend some games that Russell might enjoy playing at a games night? Chill, put some music on, a cheese platter. Play a collaborative storytelling game together. No heavy rules, no competition. These suggestions have: * Simple rules * No competitive element For the Queen. A charming, incredibly simple game that's my go-to for people who have never played an RPG before. It's guided improv with cards. Downfall. Build a fictional society. Imbue it with a fatal flaw. Improv scenes that describe this society's collapse. 3 players only. No more, or less. The Quiet Year. Draw a little map. Take turns drawing cards, and responding to the prompt on that card. I got to hold Stephen Baldwin's shoes lol I don't think she wanted to be me
Dropout is a streaming service specific to comedy and extremely affordable as far as subscription streaming goes. I'm obviously biased but it's worth every penny. All sorts of different stuff on there but my favorites are D20 (comedians doing D&D), Make Some Noise/Game Changer (panel/prompt based improv), Very Important People (comedians get dressed up and have to come up with a character on the spot to do improve style interview) and Dirty Laundry (comedians drinking and guessing embarrassing/wild stories about each other). They've also started to do comedy features in the last year and that's where Chris Grace ties in, he has a Dropout comedy feature that I also can recommend!

I'm sorry you have to work somewhere like that. It sounds mentally exhausting and downright stressful. I hope things improve for you soon 💙
@margauxf4321, that's a good perspective. You can't force people to change.
I LOVE how Russell doesn't want to give Gianmarco wolf...he can foresee the slippery slope ahead😅
Im with russell on that one
Chris Grace as Scarlet Johanssen, was nothing short of incredible!
Not surprised to find some Dropout crossover fans here! Unless you were lucky enough to catch him on tour??
Either way, agreed. Incredible show❤️
@panpolypuff I wish I was that lucky! But at least I was lucky enough to discover Dropout!

Chris Grace suggesting he has a little crush on Russell Daniels in the first 10 min was so cute.

I've seen a pic of Chris' husband. This would very much track.
