- He was the son of actors, but Michael Douglas says he was reluctant to follow in the deep footsteps of his father, Kirk Douglas. But as an Oscar-winning producer and performer, Michael has earned his own legendary status. He now stars as the revolutionary figure Benjamin Franklin in the Apple TV+ series "Franklin." He tells correspondent Mo Rocca that the show's story, about the founding father's efforts to save a burgeoning democracy, is timely given today's dangerous political climate.

"Thanks for the park and all your other work, Michael Douglas."
You know what I have always loved about Michael Douglas acting, he always conveyed 'what the f**k did I get myself into' very well.
Excellent point ☝️.
😂😂😂😂😂 😅😅😅😅 💯 💯
Great actor and a real character
Thanks, Michael, and whoever else is responsible for bringing this important fore father, Mr. Franklin, to the forefront! This nation’s fore parents weren’t perfect, but they got a whole lot right! Our US Constitution and our Bill of Rights were, and still are, pretty darn radical! Let’s make sure we remember that and honor them by voting! 🌊🇺🇸💙

(*forefather = 1 word)
I have enjoyed watching how Michael Douglas has evolved as an actor. I think he brings a sense of humanity to his role as Benjamin Franklin.
If it’s humanity that he portrays, then that’s great acting
I grew up w the Douglas family, in Westport CT. My mother Deedy McCormick was BFs w Diana Dill Douglas, Michael came over a few times to play tennis and we also visited them.
Well done Mo Rocca! Excellent piece.
Michael Douglas is the 'spitting' image of his father. They could have been twins! There is a saying that to see what we will look like when we get old is to look at our parents. That is so true in my case as well. I look just like my mother when she was in her 70's, which is my age now. BTW, MD is a superb actor!
Michael Douglas, one of the finest movie stars of his generation, playing my favorite founding father? I’m hyped!
"War is when the government tells you who the bad guy is. Revolution is when you decide that for yourself." - Benjamin Franklin
Franklin never said this. The phrase “the bad guy” is a dead giveaway. Not used in Franklin’s day.
He should receive the Kennedy center honors this year for his contributions to motion pictures. Like Jane Fonda, he was the successful nepotism child of a famous actor to become an icon in his own right.
Being the son of Kirk surely helped but he blazed his own path….”Gordon Gekko” is part of movie history .
He rocked Liberace lol
Michael Douglas is one cool cat!
My son's fav actor he's 20
The autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is worth the read. The way he takes control of his life and his drive reminds Arnold S.
He was a rather lazy lost person but somehow pushed through it 😅
Loved Wall Street when it came out, looking forward to Franklin. Thanks always for the preserve, I'm so glad it got saved, walked there again today.
He was so young in the Streets of San Francisco
And handsome 😉
Yes, I had a crush on him, I was in HS during Streets of San Francisco
I remember when Douglas was on Streets of San Francisco. What a hunk he was! Watched it every week with my dad. His paramour was Brenda Vacarro
i love Michael Douglas
I love Jesus but Michael and Martin are cool guys, shook his hand in '91...
If you knew anything about him then you wouldn’t love him
Benjamin Franklin is my favorite founding father. While he owned slaves occasionally and ran "Runaway" ads in his paper, by 1750, he had no slaves and became an abolitionist, arguing against slavery.
He was 70 years old in 1776, and had many careers by the time he became a statesman and diplomat. He proved you're never too old to learn or try domething new. It ain't over 'til it's over. He died in 1790, having live 5 lifetimes in his 84 years.
Would be nice to do a series about Franklin as a young man. No one has done it to my knowledge.
M. Douglas: one of the best actors of all times. A genius.
There was no mention of Michael Douglas's early work in the TV series "Streets of San Francisco" along with Karl Malden. 😲
For me, that's what brought him into my pop culture orbit. He was still best known as Kirk Douglas's son, but definitely making his own way by then.
That should have definitely been included because he left SOSF to direct “One Flew Over the Cuckoo Nest”… minor detail.
I agree-I loved watching Streets of San Francisco with my dad
Michael Douglas was the son Karl Malden never had and he took him under his wing and showed him what it took to be an accomplished actor. This is what this story is missing. It was his experience on “Streets of San Francisco” that propelled him from the small screen to the big screen…
@@cleong1218 Thank you for your comment.
What a gem the whole Douglas Family is !
Ben Franklin, and all of his contemporaries, were all such interesting people. I like to imagine what many of the people of that time created without the trappings of our traditional education.
They all received what we now call liberal arts education consisting of Latin, logic, debate, mathematics, astronomy, and music. Today’s right wing consider this woke and are otherwise dismissive of it.
I actually live walking distance away from where Franklin is buried at 5th and Arch Sts in Philadelphia.
They had what we would refer to now as a liberal arts education.
I remember him in the Streets of San Francisco.
"Wonder Boy's" is a favorite of mine. Great all around movie.
That was the quirkiest, funniest, saddest, most insightful movie he's ever done. I loved Francis McDormand in it, too!
Can't really top John Adams as a drama covering America's founding but nice Michael giving it a try. The 1987-92 'Wall Street/Basic Instinct' era a great run. Liberace brave too (the Marc Elliot biography very good covering his production struggles/divorces/addiction clinics). Glad your cancer in remission; keep going, Michael ❤🎉🎉
One of my favorite actors
I saw Michael Douglas in April 1987 filming at the 21 club on 52nd street in New York which unfortunately is now gone filming Wall Street. When I saw him exit the trailers and walking to the set, he looked like a million bucks. I knew that movie was going to be great just by the way he dressed for the part. I recommend two underrated movies he did because nobody talks about them and he was great in. 1989’s Black Rain and 1996’s The Game. Two terrific movies to watch on a Saturday night.
I love "The Game" and "Falling Down", and others. I'd like to see "Black Rain". The complexity of the story and his emotionality in his movies are so captivating.
Black rain is great & so is falling down.
True legend for Mike.
Legendary
Always loved, The Streets Of San Francisco ❤
It's so hard for humans to not be insecure...no matter how much they've accomplished.
He looks just like this father. Admire them both for their contribution to the arts. He was in a television series at ine point too.
He looks so much like his father, Kirk, now.
Great actor!
Great to see MD in a 'period piece', and Mo Rocca on CBS Sunday Mornings!
I love that man!
Every since The Movie Wall Street,Michael Douglas is my favorite Male actor. Wish his new movie, was on other Streaming services.
Enormously popular (and great) t.v. series > The Streets of San Fransico
Risky and brilliant role as Liberace.
❤Michael is TheLegend❤Iconic❤Fantastic actor/producer❤love from Finland
What a talent and a very handsome gentleman! Such a great actor!! Thank you for all of the amazing movies, Michael…looking forward to many more! 🎉❤🎉❤
Michael Douglas is a versatile actor and great person happy soul who enjoys life to fullest, his talent is truthful and authentic ❤️
Can not wait to see this!
Se ve muy interesante la Serie Michael D. es una Super Estrella 🌟 😊
Just wow Michael, so good, crushed this roll. Big time!
I Like the actor let's hope he lives on longer for future flim years. The world won't be the same without him.
I’m enjoying the series…you do a great job, Mr. Douglas…you give old Ben the panache he so deserves.
I imagine you aren’t too far off the mark. I wish we had someone of his genius and caliber in government presently. BRAVO! Well done.
Epic was Falling Down!
Uno de los mejores actores de los Estados Unidos. Larga vida a Mr.
Douglas y su familia.
Omg. The living legend, Michael Douglas.
Wow! The older he gets, the more he's like his father.
Outstanding work by Mo. Mo needs an emmy for this!
One of our very best!
Don’t get no better than Mike Douglas!
i just liked his romancing the stone movies and Liberace. This one looks very good! It might be one of his best!
Yes, they were fun. Will have to watch them again.
Heck yes. ❤
I was a student at Harrisburg Area Community College & our house was seven miles from Three Mile Island when the plant had its “accident.” Watching “The China Syndrome” after it happened was chilling.
Michael Douglas is a legend just like his Dad. A wonderful actor and director.
I think he's had a bigger career than his dad. And his dad had a great one.
He is a really good actor
Noah Jupe in another role that will raise his standing. And , working with an icon like MD….wow
Wonderful guy!
Mo❤❤
looks and sounds more and more like his dad
Great actor.
If I were married to Catherine Jones I'd be Michael Douglas too.
I thought Michael Douglas was great in War of the Roses and Romancing the Stone. Can't wait to see the series about Benjamin Franklin.
Of all the characters you're going to play while using the misnomer "democracy" (4:22), Ben Franklin should not be him.
When a woman accosted Mr. Franklin outside the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia (1787) and asked him, "What kind of government have you given us, Franklin famously replied "A REPUBLIC, if you can keep it..."
He did NOT say, "A democracy, if you can keep it..."
Santa Barbara Pride!
The late Tom Wilkinson already was the perfect older Franklin in the John Adams miniseries.
How about another miniseries with Franklin as a young man instead?
MD has shown great instincts re: choosing films to produce and/or be in. Also, he can be counted on to give excellent performances. (A friendly note, though: he might want to go into the recording studio and loop a couple of his lines in The China Syndrome so that he pronounces 'nuclear' accurately: in the movie, he pronounces it as 'nu-cu-lar'!).
He's starting to sound like his father with that gravely voice
Greed is NOT good. That movie did a lot to damage, making the public less critical about ruthless behavior in business. Around the same time we had the trope, "Looking out for number one." My favorite Michael Douglas movie is "Falling Down," Joel Schumacher's 1993 film that takes an unflinching look at the unraveling of the American Dream.
❤ladies man too
Too thin to play Franklin...
They forgot his time on TV with Karl Malden in "The Streets of San Francisco"...
Did you forget Liberace?
I don't think I have seen that one.
That was a great role. He’s a terrific actor
Catherine and Michael have the same birthday.
I watched the first episode of Franklin and had to turn it off after about 10 minutes because I don't understand French dialog. I didn't like having to constantly read the English subtitles and didn't like the distraction of seeing the English subtitles. That was a stupid idea of having rather long French dialogs in an American film.
Can't imagine him playing Ben Franklin but anyway...
Wasn't Ben Franklin bald on top?
Im normally really into historical movies. I'm sorry I'm gonna pass on this. I can't see Micheal Douglas as Ben Franklin.
😅😅
Given his comment on Democracy, I can imagine how woke and revisionist this Franklin is. Suspension of due process, forced vaccinations, thought crime, election corruption, wrecking the Bill of Rights, and open borders is the real threat.
Anyone remember the Covid pandemic isolation at all? Not exactly the Resident Evil invasion of zombies😂😂😂 in the real life we are much better but movies are very helpfull giving us the answers we are seeking for. Therefore everybody is invited to use cinema shows as best reason for dating supporters followers fans or partners in business and never let any evil dare to harm you guys. That's what fans are for 🤗🍀💋🥂🍀💎💯
A perfect example of bad casting.
GREED IS GOOD!
IT SURE IS
Michael Douglas playing Ben Franklin is funny because Ben Franklin was very much against Jewish people. Wanted to ban them from the colonies..lol.
Why isn't a black actor playing this role? I hope CBS News investigates.
Look I like Michael Douglas but he does not work or fit as Ben Franklin at all
That Park would house many illegal immigrants and homeless veterans, Mike, how many can America put you down for?
Douglas was completely miscast in the role. He didn't show Franklin's brilliance or humor. Tom Wilkinson was soooo much better.
Thanx for the great laugh --- I like MD, but Louis CK'd be a more informed choice -- seriously.
Is Biden being stalked by Trump, he just would let go?
Every Sunday it's the same routine with CBS... Climate change alarmism, holocaust guilt top-up, then needlessly putting random black people on a pedestal. EVERY SINGLE SUNDAY
Seriously? Fatal Attraction? Jack Black would have been better in this role?
Trump 2024
I’m surprised they casted a white privileged actor, and didn’t cast ole Ben as a trans person of color.. This is pure bigotry!
Did you make this up yourself? Or do you have a team of comedy writers?
@@markkozlowski3674just me! thanks for the compliment and thinking it was such a good joke, it must have required an entire staff!
@@NHLblkgurl What is your evidence for asserting that I was complimenting you? You need to learn to read more carefully.
@@markkozlowski3674Do you need to me read your own reply.. You posted that had to be so good, it must have taken a team of comedy writers to have come up with it.. (you’re not backpedaling, realizing what you said- now are ya? ) 😂
@@NHLblkgurlwell played
A Communist playing a Nationalist.
Color me shocked.
poor casting choice
Mo is still as awful as ever.
He doesn't look anything like Franklin. No thanks.
I don't know about this. Franklin is just Michael Douglas in a wig. It's not like he's even trying to act.
