Yes, I was always team Delores! She was the smoothest dancer. She was smart and ambitious. And she really loved her family and just wanted what was best for them. So misunderstood.
She disagreed with Sister a lot but she REALLY loved her. She put her body on the line, messing with the sidekick of Satin. She tried to help but her guilt pushed her out of that house and out of that city. She couldn’t stay and watch her sister die, plus she wanted more.
Although sad, I love the original because the emotions and storyline were raw and the soundtrack is memorable. I still get angry, sad, and happy throughout the scenes. I love the remake only because the storyline was different with Sister killing Satin aka Satan instead of Sister dying. It was Whitney's last film and although Jordin Sparks did a great job as Sparkle, I find myself imagining Aaliyah as Sparkle. Delores leaving in the original movie was so inspiring. And yes she was slept on, smart and ambitious. That scene with her standing up to her mom helped me later on. Finally, the original cast was legendary: Lonette McKee, Dorian Harewood, Irene Cara, Mary Alice, Philip Michael Thomas. My parents were teens during the original release and they resemble Dorian Harewood and Lonette McKee. I often see their storyline mirror what my parents went through: wanting better, abuse, etc. The way you broke this down was on point.
Sister had it all and didn't realize it. She was beautiful and talented. And if she didn't get caught up she probably would have made it out of her situation.
Your analysis on Satin Struthers is so spot on and reminiscent of my beautiful, talented and intelligent late Aunt who was unalived by her insecure, under achieving and bruised Ego husband back in 88’. 😞
Great film, Irene Cara did a great performance as Sparkle, Whitney Houston's favorite film and she got the film rights back in 2000 and she wanted Aaliyah to star in the film, but the film wouldn't start production until 2012
He is everything! He so loves hearing from fans of Sparkle. He’s very proud of this film! He also was a model too and get this, he was the only Black person in ‘The Godfather.’ 😂
Fun fact: McKee was an actual music artist, before sparkle she even had a mini hit when she was a teenager. I do think she recorded a couple albums through the years you can look up if interested.

The movie was shot like it was a low budget tubi movie but the actors were so good I didn't pay any attention to that. Like the subtle zoom in as Lonnette McKee sings What can I do. It had me thinking I had paid my money and I was at the club watching the group. Lonette was phenomenal and I wished her songs were on the soundtracks as well. You also changed my view on Delores. Satin Struthers... mercy he was rough. Great review and keep up the good work.
What I liked most about the remake is Sister lived!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾 I remember watching the original with my uncle at my aunts house and I cried like a baby when Sister died!! 😢😢 What really triggered my crying was when Levi got the news Sister died, and he was walking back to his ceil and had a picture of her taped on the wall!! Broke my heart!! 💔💔😭😭😭 I was probably 12 when I watched it that first time!! as much as the OG Sparkle had me crying I'm still casting my vote for that one!! ✔✅👌🏾

Is that what it was? Makes sense because she seemed like she was sick without it, but wait wasn’t she sniffing something when she said ‘Sister can’t fly with one wing?’
The O.G. version had more GRIT 2 it. It felt more like we were watching a "making of the band" type of fly on the wall type of feel, whereas the remake was polished/ samitized to the point where it didn't give me that street feel that we get in the original that really made you feel the sisters were REALLY on their grind. And the way Carmen Ejogo sang --- it sounds like she's TRYING to sound sexy. Her version sounds like if Jessica Simpson had been tasked to sing the songs. And Jessica can sing, i e. "I Wanna Love You Forever," "Where You Are," "Your Faith in Me;", BUT she tries to hard to sound sexy a lot of the time instead of letting it come forth naturally. On the other hand, Lonette McKee 💃🏽 was naturally sexy. Her voice was nice, but between her & Irene Cara, she had the lesser voice, but she had the "Presence." BTW --- Did the actress who played the sister "Delores" actually sing her part in the backgrounds? I don't believe she had any solos, but wondered if she still sang anyway 🤔?

She probably viewed it as Sister’s sick unless she gets this stuff and this is what’s going to make her feel better and this is what’s going to make her happier with me. She felt she was taking care of her. Remember, she says, “Nobody understood Sister but ME!” - Delores was pragmatic, but she loved Sister too! She gave her body for her sister, wanting to save her life! In general, Delores was too far ahead! -“I didn’t drop a dime on you but I wish I did!” I like when he said, “You been beating on women too long!” -Yes they wrote Delores out of the rest of the movie. As an aside, Dorothy Dandridge was very close to her sister Vivian, but Vivian ended up ghosting Dorothy and her mother like ✌🏽 and it was very traumatic someone leaving and not saying bye, where she’s going, nothing. Even though Delores said bye it reminds me of their situation. She was so worried about being gone Vivian missed Dorothy’s funeral too. 🤦🏽♀️ -I read a comment that said maybe Mr. Gerber, Mama’s employer, was Sister and Sparkle’s father. I, like you, thought they all had different fathers but maybe… -Yes, Sparkle did finally come into her own. She kinda like you said is always looking after everyone else and doesn’t have a strong identity, she’s always used to being overlooked for Sister but ends up finding some inner strength. - Satin was so memorable, a very beautiful man who played this monstrous character but he’s a good person, Malik Farrakhan, he played the role well, so well he said he had old ladies coming up to him going off for HIS treatment of Sister. 😂😂😂 -Yes, Sister sang the 💩 out of them songs!
