Hey, yes there is a belt progression. There are 9 levels. I teach based on the Kukkiwon requirements for black belt but use my own syllabus as Kukkiwon doesn’t actually have a curriculum that’s left up to each individual master.
I actually stopped teaching most self defense techniques as I’ve come to realize the best way to have good self defense is to have a strong foundation in both stand up fighting and ground fighting and then spend time sparring with people of different body types. One off “self defense techniques” rarely make a big difference. My goal with the TKD course is to give you a strong stand up fighting foundation and I recommend checking out BJJ for a strong ground fighting game. In these videos you will find sparring tactics which themselves could be classified as self defense techniques, but it’s all just a part of the game.
Some schools do teach sweeps and takedowns but it’s not common. If that is what you’re looking for then try out Judo. If you’re wanting a striking art with sweeps and takedowns try out Muay Thai which is the most practical or capoeira which is less practical but very fun to practice.
I have one more question for your taekwondo course. I dont know alot about taekwondo but I always hear how they dont use hands alot but it looks like your mixing in some boxing punches. Does your style use hands a little more than some other taekwondo schools? Also I used to do a little bit of tang soo do which is very similar so it would probably be an easy transition into taekwondo for me.
It’s true that a lot of TKD school don’t throw punches. Which is sad cause TKD literally translates to the way of kicking and punching. The Kukkiwon has started to push for better hand techniques in the past few years though so that’s good. I teach basic boxing techniques in my TKD classes as I believe students should be more well rounded.

Is there a belt progression in your skool course? Roughly following the kukkiwon syllabus, etc ? Or is it set up differently?

I love this series. How many times should you do each class before proceeding as a total beginner?
You’re welcome to do them as many times until you feel comfortable. The class plans are written for someone to do 3 classes a week

Does Taekwondo include any sweeps and take downs?
