What happened to our Goldfish's Eye?

  • A few weeks ago one of our goldfish lost their eye. We've no idea how it happened. We made sure to keep the tank water very clean to reduce the chance of infection. Goldfish eyes are very delicate and are easily damaged, make sure you have no sharp edges in the tank and suitable tank mates. They can survive and find food with no eyes, they can adapt very well.

I'd highly recommend attaching a sponge filter to the filter intake to prevent possible injuries. Could be she was sleeping at night and the flow pushed her towards the filter intake and sucked her eye out 😬? Aquarium salt baths would also be a good idea to prevent infection. Other than that, don't worry about her too much. She at least has her other eye to guide her (: I have an old partially blind betta that lives a happy life just fine. And I'm sure your little one will do so too, it just takes some readjusting is all (which she seems to be doing great at). It also helps that she has been in the same exact environment before and after the incident. That'll make things much easier for her.

Lifewithpets . Hi, I've come to watch this video again for reassurance. I bought a veryyoung calico fantail today with only one eye. I got it for £2 as it's been at the lfs for over a mth and really needed a new home. Now I'm a little worried about it getting it's share of food with my bigger fish being such gluttons. I feed 4 or 5 times a day so hope it can get a decent amount. I think this fish was either born this way or lost it's eye when very young. I really hope he copes as well as yours does.

The same happened with my gold fish too and unfortunately she lost both her eyes . I feel so sorry for her but by scrolling through web I got to know that this happened due to bacterial infection which is mainly caused due to poor maintenance of tank or dirty water. and ya , if another fish had eaten the eye then there would have been blood or tissue damage , but in this case the eye has popped out of its place on its own .I just hope this helps clear out the difference between eye popping and biting and don't worry , fishes can survive without eyes as they have receptors on their skin and hence they can detect any movement in water .

Hi. when I work at a aquatic's , sometimes goldfish lost an eye by accident and were fine. but at times you got a bully in the tank and use to attack and eat the eyes of other fish. Keep observing the other fish to make sure no bulling is going on, some fish get the taste for eyes and have to be separated from the rest.

There was a goldfish many years back at my high school in a huge tank built into the wall of a main hallway. There were many happy goldfish in there. In my freshmen year I noticed one of the goldfish didn't have any eyes. Everyone I asked about it kept saying it wasn't unusual. Well the goldfish seemed to stay perfectly healthy through the years. After I graduated high school it was still swimming around doing just fine.
May your goldfish also stay healthy and live a long time.

The black fish bit it off. Same thing happened to five of my fish. First time it happened, I thought the fish injured itself with the equipment or decorations. But after more fishes began to lose eyes and me catching the black one (just like the one in your tank) pestering an orange one like the kind you have in your aquarium, I installed a glass divider and separated the three black ones from the rest.

I have a telescope eye'ed goldfish who is around 9 years old. I placed the siphon tube on the bottom floor and went to start the siphon. I came back in right away and he had swam into the tube and was stuck. I broke the siphon to let him out and one of his eyes fell back into the tank as well. I freaked out and have no idea how he even got into the tube. Since I was doing a water change, I set up a quarantine tank and dosed him with antibiotics per the instructions on the bottle. His eye hole healed nicely. He still has some issues eating with the other fish finding food quicker. I usually wait until his good eye is facing the feeding point and then drop it in. It has been almost a year and I'm happy to report that he is okay. He is a black moor named Merlin. The only odd thing that happened, after his eye was gone and healed, a few months later his belly and some parts of his fins turned white. I'm sorry this happened to you. I know there is nothing I can say to make you feel less responsible so I will just enforce to love them as much as you can.

I just inherited a new fish tank with 5 goldfish. I added 6 more fish to the tank. Over the past couple of days I noticed one or the new goldfishes eyes were looking cloudy and this morning I noticed one of the eyes is missing :( I can't seem to get the temperature right in the tank either as I believe the heater may be broken? The temp keeps going from 70 to 80 and back down. Do you think that could be an issue? Maybe I'll change the water again but the tank hasn't been here even a week yet? Any ideas/suggestions? I appreciate it!

I have 4 lionheads... and my 4th one was a free adoption from a local pet chain... they had received a double order of all their fish, and tight on space, they combined the little lionheads with the larger telescope moors... the result after a week was that almost all the lionheads had lost either one eye, or both. When you look at your video slow motion eating the peas, you can see how goldfish with create quite a strong suction to make sure they are actually inhaling what they are aiming for... what I'm guessing happened in your tank was Gracie and another fish were probably aiming head on for the same goal, and her eye was inadvertently sucked out of the socket...
Luckily, goldfish have their lateral line in addition to other senses... although unsightly, even with both eyes missing, my (almost perfect) double blind lionheads finds food and swims perfectly... he seems to expend more energy searching, so he is slightly leaner than the others who find food more easily with all their senses in tact. This spring, they are all out to the pond, so his otherwise ideal genetics can be a new start:)

It's actually not uncommon for goldfish to eat the eyes of other goldfish. It's odd, unsure why they do that. If you had a Ryukin I would of blamed him as they tend to be buttheads. Edit - I wrote this before you mentioned you were told it was common lol.

      M. Yates I was just about to say the same. I actually watched one of my Orandas suck on a comets eye trying to get the food from his mouth.
Fancy goldfish are all mouth, they're slow and can't swim fast enough to get the food (apart from my albino Ryukin who's swims like he has a rocket up his arse) so they follow the scent mouths wide open sucking at anything and everything in its path, usually that scent is in someone's mouth though and because eyes protrude it's the first thing that gets sucked.

    • @babydonnaP
      @babydonnaP 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

+Lifewithpets check my comment above, that's what's most likely happend. I call fancies 'eyeball suckers' BC every fancy goldfish I've had has always sucked eyeballs trying to take food from others mouths.

Lifewithpets Have any plants been nibbled? mine do the even with no food involved too (if one is sucking on a pebble or chewing Elodea), maybe it's the sucking sound/vibration that sets them off.

Do goldfish really regenerates it retina after losing its eye/s? I just google it and found out this
"Unlike what is possible with the human eye, fish are able to regenerate injuries to the retina at the cellular level. ... They focus on the retina of fish, since -- unlike humans -- fish are able to completely regenerate all retinal nerve cells upon injury."
    Is this true anyone?

glad to hear she's okay! I had a goldfish in the past that only had one eye. I purchased him that way, so I don't know what happened, but the side of his face was completely flat and healed so it almost looked like there was never an eye there in the first place, he could have just been born like that. great video!

I recently got some fan tails and when I got my two I look and watched the fish and realised one of them had lost their eye, I don’t know if it’s more common in types that are black and orange but my one is too. Most likely a coincidence that they are the same colour.

if your fantail is classified as Ryukin then better to separate it because they are known as eye eater

i got my black moor and he has no eyes- it's very clean and smooth so my best guess he was born without them? he has no fleshy bits in the sockets and swims like a champ but i don't have a good tank for a goldfish (he was an impulse buy but i don't regret it now, he had to live with my betta + guppys but they weren't aggressive towards him if anything he kept them up at night ) but i moved him into a big tub with a few things to make him at least feel a bit more safer despite being blind- i named him Dallek (reference) but me and my mom call him dolly. so far no issues besides being a bit skinny. betta was eating his food (need to make sure thats not gonna be a issue for the betta) but so far its been smooth sailing. sorry if i seem like a bad fish owner who impulsively got a fish i was not ready to get. i am young and i have a weak heart for animals that are different from the norm i bout started crying when i saw him and black moors are my dream fish so yea thank you for reading and have a good day! (my dad says he might not grow because of the eye thing but i disagree so if this has happened before can someone please help?)

Our fancy goldfish of 5 years lost both eyes. Lives fine without them. We don’t know how it lost it’s eyes. We suspected the common plecostomus. Since removed. Our water quality is bad at times. I change every 7 or 9 days. It has happened again to another fancy goldfish and it may be one of our koi. One of our koi is a bully I’ve noticed.

It is very terrible to hear all this. Eyes can be lost like this! Imagine you have to live everyday without a eye or both eyes! Get the culprit out and sentences it to " live alone" or dig out an eye for an eye lost

I just discovered that our catfish lost an eye. She shares a tank with a Betta, but we're not sure if he did it. Otherwise, she seems fine. She's eating and pooping. LOL! But she does tend to swim in circles now. Hopefully, she'll make a recovery so I can put her back in her home tank soon. But I'm still kinda hesitant to put her with the Betta, yet.

This happened to my telescope. I really freaked out coz my telescope goldfish is already 7 months (handful size). The eyeball is huge! Like an oversized grapes. On the first day, my fish only sits on the bottom, on the 2nd day, he starts to eat. And now, he’s back to normal- a very glutton big goldfish. Lol

I do not have the true answer, but it is likely that the bigger goldfish have went after the smaller goldfish to chew out their eyes. A couple years ago. I bought a big fancy goldfish at Pet Smart. I put him with a few small goldfish, and it eat all of its eyes out. I FaceTime my brother earlier to look after my fish while I was babysitting my nephews. One of my goldfish lost one of its eye. The biggest goldfish in my tank are the 2 black moor goldfish. It is likely they went after the smaller goldfish.
