    the best aspect of Delicious in Dungeon is that it's such a slow burn to what it becomes. i went into it blind and did not see coming what it became.

    Having read the Manga in like three days after not being able to contain myself following Episode 13, we've only just started to scratch the surface of what the show has to offer in terms of depth of storytelling and character writing. The second cour has given us a taste, but it's got so much more to offer.
    If we get a season 2, and it's adapted as faithfully and as lovingly as season 1 has been, season 2 is going to be one of the most beloved seasons of anime of all time, I suspect.

    We got really lucky with those shows. I feel that these two can apeal to to a wider audience. What i mean by that its hard for me to recommend great anime like jobless reincarnation to my bro or sis cuz they will just bunce off because of tropes.

    The answer to making good fantasy anime was apparently just “have a woman write it instead”
    I mean when you compare fullmetal alchemist to 99% of isekai or shows like 7 deadly sins, the blueprint was right there.
    I’m joking but only partially. In reality I do think when you aren’t focused on making the protagonist as bland as possible to fulfill a trashy power fantasy and you’re more interested in writing a story with interesting characters that don’t boil down to “I want to be them” or “I want to be with them” than writing fanservice scenes for a very particular demographic of your possible audience and oversaturated action scenes with choreography that boils down to screaming special named attacks you end up writing a better story
    Dungeon Meshi is only getting more popular over time. I doubt it’ll be quite as popular as Frieren but it’s definitely filling that gap people didn’t realize they had after Frieren ended

    • @Lestibournes

      To be fair Aura and the witches that team up with Frieren are FS chars.

    • @foggy8298
      @foggy8298 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Lestibournes when you say fs characters do you mean fight scene characters? Cuz I wasn't talking about those, but those do exist in Frieren.
      I wouldn't say that about Kanne and Lawine, though. It depends on how you define "fight scene characters", but for me, I think a fight scene character exists purely to get in a fight and lose a fight purely to show stakes, show how a character acts in a fight, or show the magic system.
      Aura definitely was all 3 of those, she existed to show how demons acted and how mana and mana suppression worked, to show Frieren's hatred of demons and give a catalyst for another flashback with Flamme, and then to lose.
      Kanne and Lawine are definitely actual characters, though. They barely fight to begin with, first off, and they serve multiple functions in the story:
      - show how Frieren has learned to mediate better from Sein
      - remind Frieren of the lessen Himmel taught her about how different party dynamics work and not to judge people with seemingly weird relationships
      - be less skilled and less knowledgeable so that Frieren needs to explain how the Stille's work and further express her superiority over most mages
      - have Kanne need water to fight so that Richter can start exposition about physical magic's benefits and downsides and start the explanation of magic needing imagination to function
      - be children to show how seemingly ruthless Richter is, which ties into Denken's character and his caring nature, trying to drag Richter along to social activities even after they were no longer on the same team
      - have Lawine, the more skilled mage, lose the 2nd exam to show how luck based the affair ended up being
      - have Kanne be an example of what Serie looks down on in a mage
      Some of those were those 3 fight scene related things, but most of them were genuine character functions outside of the action. Also, they are actual characters we spend a lot of time with outside of the action, and the end of the season said as clear as possible that we'll see them again when they're older and develop more.
      If they were only fight scene characters, I don't think they would exist at all. the first exam can be easily rewritten to not be team based.
      I would argue that you *could* technically remove characters like Ehre, Scharf, Kanne, Lawine, Laufen, and Richter. The story would be far less interesting and worse, but you could do it, but the only characters that I would say are purely fight scene characters in the mage exams are:
      - the guy who refused to work with everyone (not a fight scene but a scene with conflict that he "lost")
      - the girl who existed just to lose the second exam and show how the escape golems worked
      - the 2 identically dressed jobbers with Edel the hypnosis girl
      Kanne and Lawine are not fight scene characters, but Aura is and a few others are too. That's not a bad thing, though. The problem with fs characters is if they are the main characters or if the author believes that can replace actual writing with a power-set. Hell, even Aura still plays a small part of the story going forward in relation to her being one of the 7 sages of destruction.
      Sorry for the long response, but I wanted to clarify what I was talking about and that those 2 weren't fs characters and its kinda simplifying the story to say they are

    There was a good quote about these two: "Frieren is a good manga with an incredible anime, Delicious in Dungeon is an incredible manga with a good anime". Both are worth watching and while I prefer Delicious in Dungeon, they are both S-tier and deserve the world.

    I picked up the first volume of Delicious in Dungeon at the bookstore, and when I opened it up, I was like a fish on a line. Needless to say, when I saw that the anime was airing on Netflix, I was like "Hell yeah!"
    I don't know how long it will run, but it could go all the way through the story, since it's already reached its conclusion.

    Ultimately, all that has happened is as you have sort of stated. We finaly got non-trash fantasy anime again. It's been a hot minute, with the overwhelming majority just being bulk trash that either you force yourself through or don't even bother with.
    I'm burnt out and tired of trash anime. (Not to mention all the anime studios that are mistreating artists just to force out this garbage content.)

    From anime company perspective most of the time, it is pointless to focus on that masterpieces when they can put 20% of the effort and gain 80% of the views. For them, money comes from VIEWS, not the rating on MAL or Crunchyroll. If we want more quality shows, the crappy ones cannot sell so well.

    what made Delicious in Dungeon worse for me personaly is that its core idea doesn't work with its plot. i mean, it starts from MC's sister being eaten by a dragon, so they going to save her, but they can't afford supplies, so they have to cook and eat what they can find in the dungeon. sounds cool, what is not cool is when they spend ENTIRE DAY to pull of fckn mandragora safely using two different methods, while there are lots of other eadible things out there. and that's just one episode, by far not the only moment when they WASTE time Lias sister don't have much of. every time this shit happens, it makes me feel like Lias wants to eat monsters much more than he wants to save his sister.

    • @Ogkirko

      Really I think it’s fairly rated

    • @StonetheDestroyer42
      @StonetheDestroyer42 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I think people really need to learn how to distinguish between their personal preferences and more general or objective rating of things.
      Frieren is not over-hyped, whether it's what you like or not. You don't have to like it, and it doesn't have to be your thing, but it earns is nigh universal praise because of technically exceptional animation and music, consistent and careful character writing, and an excellent grasp of time.
      These are things it basically objectively does exceptionally well. It's earned its hype. But nothing is everyone's thing, so if those storytelling methods don't jibe with you, that's fine. But don't conflate that personal opinion with objective truth. Frieren accomplishes what it aims to, and it should be judged primarily on how well it executes on those goals, not on whether its goals align with your taste. (I hate Solo Leveling, for example, but I can acknowledge it does certain things well that a lot of people like and which has made it popular. I just don't care about those things as much, and it doesn't really try to do the things I like in storytelling at all, so it's not for me.)

    • @Lestibournes
      @Lestibournes 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Frieren is amazing in how it portrays demons, and the human psychological weakness towards them. It's a great metaphor for real life.

      @@StonetheDestroyer42 For Solo Levelling, paradoxically I find the manwa very compelling, and the anime sort of bland. I suspect that the tension in the animation is just very diminished. Going more in depth, I assume that the tension effect in the manwa relies mostly in the notion of "closure", that is the fillings that our brain put in between different panels. It has been detailed by Scott Mc Cloud's book, "Understanding Comics".
      The panels in Solo Leveling manwa are goregeous and evocative, and all the tension is put in the closures. The Anime has no closures, that's all.
      Frieren is just something on its own. It is the storytelling of the web of time and relationships, the invisible canvas that binds all together, and this canvas is not made only of great deeds, but by billions of mutual interactions with unfathomable consequencies.
