I was deployed somewhere in this planet few years back. My nation did cooperation with the Latvians. One evening we had few drinks in a sauna and around 1am we were listening traditional songs from each others nations. This struck me. A Latvian friend explained the meaning of this song and it touched me. Reminds me of home. Reminds me of that we are not that different. I live in Canada....my heritage is Latvian. I speak it....understand it. This is the most amazing song ever written for our country...besides the anthem. Martins Brauns used the words of our poet Rainis, who was a nationalism/freedom writer. No one can really understand the meaning of the words unless they are Latvian, but the song speaks about freedom. Latvia has always been suppressed throughout its history. For me it's about the persistence of our nation, our traditions, culture and how despite the fact that christians battered down our gates and all the occupations - there is still old power in the land, we have persisted as people, emerged into a new world remembering who we are.
I do live in Germany, my mother is Latvian. I can identity myself more as a Latvian then a German. I love this song because it is just a some kind of anthem not for Latvia, but for us Latvians and our culture.

I am estonian and I listened this for the third time in a row. It's interesting that when latvain songs are hopeful, they are also kind of cheerful (I don't know the meaning of the lyrics but none of you cried). But when you watch (or sing) videos (or concert) of estonian song festival, then most of the songs are quite morbid (but also kind of hopeful). When there aren't anger in them, there is definately a lots of sadness (look at all those crying faces in the estionian song ffestival videos).
Kadri R this song is about how Latvia started and how many people tried to steal it from us. But it didn't matter how hard they tried our patriotism was too strong.

I live in Canada....my heritage is Latvian. I speak it....understand it. This is the most amazing song ever written for our country...besides the anthem. Martins Brauns used the words of our poet Rainis, who was a nationalism/freedom writer. No one can really understand the meaning of the words unless they are Latvian, but the song speaks about freedom. Latvia has always been suppressed throughout its history. For me it's about the persistence of our nation, our traditions, culture and how despite the fact that christians battered down our gates and all the occupations - there is still old power in the land, we have persisted as people, emerged into a new world remembering who we are.

I am estonian and I listened this for the third time in a row. It's interesting that when latvain songs are hopeful, they are also kind of cheerful (I don't know the meaning of the lyrics but none of you cried). But when you watch (or sing) videos (or concert) of estonian song festival, then most of the songs are quite morbid (but also kind of hopeful). When there aren't anger in them, there is definately a lots of sadness (look at all those crying faces in the estionian song ffestival videos).
