Hello…couple NOTES! 😊 I recorded bits of the process as I was experiencing with my idea not knowing if it was going to work or not so the voiceover was just a walk-through, but I am so happy to answer any questions! OK, I used two different resting powders, the fine resting powder and one with more grit to it to give it a little bit more texture … 1. Brush on clear gesso on the tape if it’s sticky side down if it’s sticky side up, you do not add or won’t need to add any clear gesso. Before it is dry, you will cover the tape fully with your resting powder. Let dry for a few minutes and then sweep off the excess lightly. 2. Yes I used two different resting solutions. Solution#1 I sprayed vinegar ( from a bottle) I then made a mixture of salt and hydrogen peroxide, and then blotted it on the tape that had vinegar sprayed on it and then left it too dry. You can use a heat gun to help it along, but it can fully dry on his own as well. ( this solution gave me more of the Rusty tones, yellow orange, etc..) 2. In the second solution, I used a product called modern Masters effects rust activator you can find this on Amazon. The small bottle is all you will need for the small projects that you are doing because it is quite expensive.. believe me it will go a long way. ( this is the solution that gave me the different shades of color. I allowed it to freely dry but did hit it with the heat gun for just a second or two. Last I did use a spray sealer on the tape and blotted clear gesso on the more textured tape. I hope this helped I will post a link to the solution that I used. If you have any more questions feel free to ask. I hope you give this a go.! And please tag me!! Would love to see what you come up with!!!
Wow! Not sure how I ran across you this morning, but I’m so glad I did! New subbie. Love your pieces and all you shared! All new to me! Thank you and happy Saturday from So. Calif! ❤
Oh my gosh....I think i will stick to my cinnamon, and leave you with what you have. The outcomes are amazing. I will have to make something rustic again but with cinnamon 😊 after my Schabby Chic Project. You are a very clever mixed media artist Angie ..just love your work ❤
Oh thank you so much my sweet friend.. I really appreciate your kind words… yes! Cinnamon is great! I use to do that technique when I was making primitive dolls etc… I am planing my do a faux rust as well. 🧡
I love Modern Masters!!! I have buckets full of stuff I've rusted with that stuff. Also, Miracle Gro powdered plant food works great on metal to rust it. Copper also has a wonderful patina. Oh, the fun you and I could have. ❤ P.S. I live in the mountains as well.
Hello… oh thank you so much for stopping by and the kind comment.. yes modern masters is awesome stuff!! I have the whole line. And have been using it for years in different ways.. it’s great that after years it still works.lol! You will have to go back and look around my channel a bit as I work with copper as well! Love copper and patina… have a wonderful day! 🩵🩵🩵
Oh yay!! Seriously have fun and if the vinegar isn’t acting fast enough through the mixture of salt and Hydro peroxide on it, it should push the activation of rusting quicker 🧪
Thanks Angie, I really like the different effects that you’ve achieved. Really appreciate the technique. Could you tell me what the rust powder is and where to find. I couldn’t really see the brand .
Hello… yes! And remember these were achieved by two different rusting activators… MM METAL effects and vinegar with salt and peroxide I used one called rusty powder and the other one is from paper artsy called rusting powder 😊
What a super concept- rusting tape! Love the look Angie! Question, did you brush off the rusting powder you dumped on at the start before adding the liquids or metal effects? Were all of the tapes rusted on the sticky side? Do they bend? I'm thinking of your binding repair. Thanks so much for sharing this ❤
Hello and thank you for the support of my channel as well! 1. YES! I tapped off all the extra into another sheet of paper( how you would glitter) and then I took a soft bush and gently brushed off the excess. ( giving it a few min to dry, before lightly brushing away excess) make sure to wear a mask or go outside to avoid getting rusty dust particles in you nose. 2. No. The bottom row half is sticky side up and the top half was sticky side down.. I had to tape the top and bottom of the sticky side up to keep the tape flat. Sticky side down you would just tape onto the silicone Matt. Make sure to use a silicone matt so the tape will come up easily. 3. YES. They are still flexible, except for the plaster when it is dry. But if I rehydrate it, I can then use it to wrap around something if need be. As for what I did for my journal signature cover, I used the real soda tin one and it did just fine bending in half. I guess all in all make sure you seal everything like I mentioned in the video, especially the ones with salt. You may lose some of the salt if you bend too much, but everything is flexible if you seal etc. Thank again, for watching! Hope you will give it a go! Have a wonderful day! 😊
I absolutely love the way these turned out Angie!! I’ve used the paper artsy rusting powder before and have never gotten any blue or green tones. Did you use that other solution on those tapes? What is that solution called? Did you use it over the rusting powder? I think I need to watch again 😂 Thanks so much for the tutorial 🥰

Awesome. Now to get rusting powder. I have some actual rust powder I saved from a bolt bin.
