To legally operate a car or motorbike in Thailand you need to a) have a thai drivers license for EACH type of vehicle, b) an International Drivers Permit. I think you can get it online but I just go to AAA to get one. It's $20 I think. Lasts a year. Know that you must show them you have a motorcycle endorsement on your State issued license (for USA) to get the stamp on your IDP. I have heard that some states (USA) have a picture of a motorcycle on the back if you have the endorsement and I know a few folks that would not get an IDP and just use their state ID and the cops would be ok. That was like 8 years ago and maybe the cops now want a real IDP.
