    I'm glad Dr.Brown made these videos, combined with the lectures it actually helps me understand Philosophy and makes it look easy (but in reality is not because it's philosophy, the last word to describe philosophy is easy)

    Hi Wowaconia, I had the Unwritten Doctrines mostly in mind and I take the commentary of Alexander of Aphrodisias on Metaph. A, 6 & 9 to be among the strongest evidence that there were such lectures/treatises (see the entry on him at the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, also see the Internet Encyclopedia of Phil on Middle Platonism). But I completely agree that this is a much disputed matter and I probably should have made that clear in the lecture,

    I just want everyone to know that their essence of life (in Socrates view) aka their Soul is naturally good and only disfigured through Ignorance. And even without arms they still have a full potential for life as long as they are knowledgeable about the proper ways to treat their body and their soul.. I really appreciate your lectures and I really really appreciate this opportunity for comments/questions and feedback.. people like you are important for the world.
    Thanks.

    Philosophy is astounding- the perspectives, doctrines - everything.....Understanding and listening, hearing each point of view, one can be swayed or not but in the same sense acquiring another important part of the world we live in, the people , lifestyle, society etc. There's so much more as Socrates said I know nothing ( each day is a great opportunity for more knowledge)
    ps apologies my mind to keyboard isn't very good , I'm learning )....

  • @onemorebrown
    @onemorebrown  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi PuraVidaTrebol, that is a good point. I wasn't intending that people take the analogy that far but was rather just trying to intuitively illustrate Socrates' point that you can't live your best life if your body is disfigured and that it would be even worse to have a disfigured soul (according to him)

      Mhi kl there are similarities to Jesus he was crucified by an elite for humiliating them example the Jewish elders telling the Romans Jesus was a bad man because he told people he was wise and good because he was God and performed miracles, to the ruling religious elite this was blasphemy and posed a risk to their power and control over the people!!!!!!!! Also There is no historical record of Socrates writings as these supposed writings are oral history derived from the writings of Plato and he's contemporaries which is similar to The Gospels of the Bible writing about Jesus's oral teachings on morality and philosophy!!!!!!!!

    I believe that the essence of the soul is unique to each person. As influenced by Socratic thought, I believe the essence of a persons soul is their individual harmony, however the person chooses to play it or embrace it depends on how much they are attuned to it.

    Dr. Brown, you mention that there are lost essays/treatises of Plato, what are you referring to? I have read that at one time the "Divisions" and the "Unwritten Doctrines" were considered to be lost works of his but that these are generally considered to not be his works by modern scholars. What essays do you hold that he wrote that are lost and where are they mentioned?

    your videos are great, I'm watching them to prepare myself for philosophy 103, and to understand the fundementals of philosophy better. But some sections could use some additional breakdown/ clarification. such as Socrates opinions on the soul and his argument for it and the argument for why someone can't believe that God(s) said that being truthful is good because they claimed it to be AND the truth is good and that's why God(s) proclaimed it to be. the last five minutes were a little thick and hard to understand. regardless I love your videos, thanks for making them public!

    this is great! thank you so much for posting. I can hear a bit of an echo of some of the themes Wittgenstein dealt with centuries later. It seems the beginning of the attempt to use logic to discuss philosophy is here with Socrates, rather than just gradiose philosophizing about 'the meaning of life' or 'what would Jesus do,' i.e., opinion and predjudice on the one hand, and reason and logic on the other.

    Spirit = self - aware presence, that I am.
    Soul = integrated heart, mind and will (Psyche). Uniting or harmonizing the perspective of the mind (concept isomorphic or true to perception) with the attitude or values of the heart (what we are emotionally for or against) activates and empowers the will to take action.
    Body/world = magic mirror reflecting our current state of being. Feedback to be calibrated, corrections made to attain desirable outcomes.
    Spirit = innermost = Being
    Soul = midmost = Knowing
    Body = outermost = Doing
    Spirit = Being =
    Soul = Awareness =
    Body/world = Experience
    The Spirit or continuum of Being employs the Soul to convert experience into awareness (learning directly from experience) and awareness into experience (dreaming our experience and experiencing our dream).
    These form a 3 in 1 unity or continuum.
    Socrates got in trouble because he left his victims feeling one down instead of empowering them with a viable alternative ; a mild form of malicious envy. His poor defense was that he had woke them up to their ignorance thus suggesting that he had done them a favor, obscuring the fact that he offered nothing in it's place. Passive/aggressive one-upmanship leads inevitably to tragedy. His sense of egoic self - importance required public recognition as the champion of champions, despite his unacknowledged disappointment in his appearance, his unattractiveness.
    Good and evil are relative terms of use. Power (god, impartially for) is neutral. How it is used is either good or evil. A hammer is power. It can be used to build or destroy, help or hinder. Evil is a subset of Good. Most and least are therefore the poles of the continuum of behaviour.

    A different view on why those such as Socrates do not write.There is a state of consciousness where one transcends such communication. Imagine hearing divine music on the inner planes and communicating with others who have had similar experiences. There are no words to actually communicate the essence of the experience but the confirmation would clear. Similarly there are no words to express to those who have not yet developed their "inner" ear.

    [Miscellaneous-spirit and Genuine-spirit, What is your mental index (SQ, Spiritual Quotient)?]
    I use spirit, mind, and soul to distinguish it, and divide the spirit into miscellaneous-spirit and genuine-spirit. Miscellaneous-spirit is a spirit associated with everyday life for the flesh, and genuine-spirit is used as a spirit of truth-realization.
    I have developed a measurement table that measures individual’s mental level according to the degree to which he has realized real-truth. There are 150 steps in the table, ranging from -500 to +1000 depending on how much you have developed your spirit based on your intelligence.
    Those who are trapped in the physical world and live mainly in the flesh belong to the scope of -500 ~ +500, and those who do the real-truth and live mentally belong to +500 ~ +1000. Another separate table gives the examples of the well-known persons’ SQs in human history.
    Are not you curious about how much your SQ is?

    The concept of divinity must have earned the most eye rolls in the history of the human race. Such egotistical mammals men are to think that even the concept of a God, such a powerful and deeply profound entity, would concern itself with human gratification or appraisal. Socrates may have not written because he preferred to teach those that could not read and therefore he could study. Inner ears are just new age b.s to say "understanding"

    [Immortality of the Soul and Enlightenment]
    An individual soul can never be immortal. But the God, which corresponds to the whole soul, is immortal and eternal. An individual soul is the reflected and accumulated part of the whole soul on an individual during its lifetime.
    All physical entities have physical life and death. But God has no physical life or death. God is an intangible being as truth itself, which is never changed, but always right. Truth is the content of God, and the whole truth is God. So God exists from the beginning of any physical being and is right forever without physical life and death.
    Secondary physical existences have even a little divine attribute due to coming out of God. Life in the secondary existences refers to the beings that perform larger mental activities than pure substances, willing activities with cognition and intelligence. Life feels the circumstance, the nature, the natural law, the truth and God. According to the size of the spirit, the degree of intellectual activity, the degree of living, and the degree of feeling truth and God are different.
    Spirit refers to the function of intellectual activity, or the channel that realizes truth and feels God at a higher level. And the quality and magnitude of the soul refers to the accumulated truth that has been continuously realized through the spirit for his lifetime, while using the spirit.
    The realization of truth by an individual becomes to know God. So the soul is the projection of God to him. The realization of truth is how to know God, how to make a great soul, how to live wide and long. Truth and God exist in the physical world anytime and anywhere without changing.
    I categorize the spirit into the miscellaneous spirit for everyday bodily life and the genuine spirit for truth realization and make a table to measure each Soul Quotient (SQ). The larger the genuine spirit, the greater the soul can be made. The better in the quality and the larger the soul, the more spacious and longer the life.
    When an individual dies, his spiritual activity ceases and also his soul development ceases. Physical death means that there is no physical basis for spiritual activity to occur and for the soul to grow.
    Truth can be shared by any number of individuals. Therefore, truths that have been realized by an individual can be propagated to other people who live in the same age and passed on to later generations. These are the phenomena in which the individual souls affect other souls and are felt to be alive.
    As a conclusion, the whole soul, God, is not dead but immortal, but individual souls can last as long as souls that have been raised for their lifetimes, but never immortal. Be careful not to fall into the illusions or false theories that the individual soul is immortal. (If you want your soul to be immortal forever, realize the whole truth and become God's level, and you will live forever without death!)
    "God is alive, so the universe is alive, and thus I am alive." God never dies, and ancient saints are still alive according to their souls. From now on, let's look whether it is dead or alive based on the spirit (or the soul) rather than the flesh. Then all philosophical questions and actual problems of mankind will be resolved.

      Hello have you died before??? I mean you refer more than once to ceasing to exist or dying. I ask this because I have died for nearly 10 minutes ( no signs of life ) I am not criticising your beliefs nor contradicting your feelings and hope . I understand that there is a manual or book for religious guidance for whichever you are inclined. I can state as matter of a fact when you die there Is nothing it is the blackest non - existant place in fact it isn't a place it is nothing.
      We are animals that live on the earth and we die exactly the same as an ant or a giraffe. When the lights are switched off there is nothing.... Thanks for listening
