- We bought an old mini bike frame and two 8 HP Briggs and Stratton engines, and we're off to Go Power Sports headquarters to modify our chassis, get our engines running, and assemble our twin engine mini bike in time for our subscriber meet up the next day.

You should put a clutch on the front engine, put the sprocket side in so it can align with the rear engine sprocket, I think it will work better and also you will only have to start the front engine.

exactly what I was going to suggest.
I was thinking figure out the compression stroke on each and set them to 180deg off of each other so it runs like a real 2 cyl! Maybe also a 2 into 1 exhaust? Two smaller headers feeding a double sized? (more cosmetic than performance).
Jeff Kephart 2 in one exhaust would be so cool.
Oh yeah a clutch on the front engine would work cause when you go to give it throttle it will engage the front engine, genius dude Genius !!!

Most 'Franken' thing about it is the gearing ratio of the chains... looks like about 6 or 7:1 for a '4 HP engine'... but only needs about 1.5 - 2:1 for 8 + 8 = 16 HP torque !!! ... Would feel like super strong '1st gear only' acceleration... then no shift into 2nd available... The engine braking from letting off the gas would prolly slide the rear wheel... This thing also needs #40 chain instead of lightweight #35 'karting' chain...

From what I could see from the other guys doing builds, yours looked the most impressive. I wouldn't consider it a failure, you just learned what not to do. Looking forward to the rebuild of this monster.

Hondas are "reliable"; Tecumsehs are esoteric. For me, nothing beats a Briggs-n-Strattocaster. 😜
Use a belt to connect the two, that way theres a slight amount of slip if the motors dont agree with each other. Make it kind of like a tiller with a tensioner pulley and when they're both idling you can flip the tensioner pulley to connect their power together

Ha ha my buddy had a mini bike like that.
It had like a 5” v belt pulley on the crank and the back one was like 3”.
Step on the left foot lever and off you went.
It tensioned the belt 😂
Keep the engine speed low and help it off the line and get the belt locked as soon as you can before you feed the power.
I agree the sprocket would of never broke had it been a belt pulley/ tensioner setup

Big thumbs up guys. That chain-hop made me nervous from my couch.
I saw that chain between the motors dancing and I thought, even with synchronized motors, one is gonna fire first and it's all fun and games until someone loses a femoral artery.
I dunno about this as a solution get the motors timed as close as you can and short the spark plugs together or trigger the magneto primaries together off one motor.
Get a v twin ignition coil off a riding mower and extent one of the wires.
@@jeffbroxton988 hate to break it to you, but V-Twin engines use two separate coils
@@RubyIsBored look up 394891. The engine series is 402707. Opposed twin engine. It may still work with a V-series engine as well.
I'm really glad that I found this channel. I've been rebuilding a 1990 Manco Streaker with a H35 Tecumseh that I bought for $120 off of Craigslist. Go Power Sports was the only place with a compatible seat.

I'd say yall did pretty damn good for a spur of the moment 20 hour build. It did move under its own power. So, thats a win in my book.

It is not a failure when parts break.
That just means you get a better part that won’t fail.
Get two new Crankshafts then get the right sprockets. While your in there hone and add new total sealed rings. Remove gov.
Clean and paint and reinstall!
It will be FINE!!

Timing belts are the perfect way to couple motors if you guys ever do this again. They keep timing but they have a enough give to not beat up the motors.

They need to match engine RPMs. In this case, shaft RPMs need to be perfect. Actually needs two identical engines with matching shaft diameters.

You two need to do that without help, your kings of rigging things that work
Cool build, it was a good start. The Go Power Shorts guys are great to get it out to you to fix it up right. Seems you need some way to account for the differences in the rpm, however slight, of each engine so they aren't fighting each other and smoothly putting the power to the ground instead.
We didn't have room for the brake, so we just took it off. I love you guys.

FINALLY someone that does not want to weld "replacement" parts on, please take the time to make the sprockets removable, it's so painful to watch people welding parts that will require frequent changing in the future.
Now Issac, we don't have a difference in how a mechanic and a fabricator work do we... the look was great. Thanks for the laugh.
Also if getting the shaft turned may find actual dual timing chain like 2 small sprockets and the chain from a 22re
timing set ($80) might be the ticket.
It would be somehow poetic to use a HARLEY chain (the motor to gear box one) between the engines!
Love it!!! Fix the small things and add a wagon or wheel barrow side car, some head and tail lights and let it all rust..
I believe putting a clutch on the front engine and a chain tension for the engine to engine chain would solve the chain slap, binding and give the ability to start the front engine first and the second engine next instead of having to start them both at the same time. It's my theory but trying it out will tell the tale. Still a pretty interesting outside the box build 👍👌.

I can feel for Ike, I'm a "it'll be fine" clutter and chaos guy, my brother is like Chris, do it right regardless oftime/cost, everything in its place, minimal is to much kind and he just moved in with me!!!
I can feel for both of them, I'm more of a clutter and chaos guy myself, but I grew up learning to do stuff by helping my dad. He'd learned courtesy of the USAF, and at 21 was responsible for keeping a multi million dollar nuclear armed bomber ready for a mission that thankfully never came. Dad was always particular about how stuff was done, and later on after dealing with projects that had been jury rigged I came to appreciate his way of doing things. Yes, it takes time, but if it prevents a problem down the road it's usually time well spent.
sometimes I wish I could be more organized, detail oriented, like when I KNOW I bought the stuff for a project but cant find it so I have to go buy more

I saw Isaac was irritated, but Chris is a great asset to your team. He is a better welder and fabricator. Also, how long did was it before you realised starting one engine will start the other?

ok so that answered my question if yall had it shipped back home...it's very cool of GPS to cover the cost of shipping it to yall..i'm guessing the franken will be up and running again in a couple weeks..i don't think i would want to take it to busco but it would be a cool put put to go check the mail with or a good advertising scoot for a local business..well done guys..never disappointed with yall

Too many mechanics on one project, that makes it hard without all the other challenges.
Make a intake with one big carb to help the motors not fight each other. Very cool

My 2 cents... Looks good. It was funny seeing Ike and RBW going at it. I think Chris is great, but being a mechanic myself I see Ike's point of view.

I think its badass! The only thing id do different is put a clutch on both engines so they dont have to be timed perfectly together.

What if you changed the joint chain with a serpentine belt? That way there would be less of a shock transferred to the second engine
Love it so far, can't wait to see it perfected! I was thinking some gussets in the corners of the frame and a chain tensioner between the engines could probably help

It is a pretty cool project there. basically with both the engines would add up to double the torque. might also want to sync the firing order of both engines if you had not already to have both fire at the same time or have one fire alternately from one another.

I think you’re being too hard on yourselves. It’s not like you had a plan to work from. No one knows exactly what sprocket or throttle cable set up to use on a 2 engine mini bike. Can’t google that. Good job fellas.

You guys might already know this. But, putting two engines together that way usually won't work. You have to have them both firing at the same time. It's very hard to make it work with them tied together with a chain. The way the chain was flopping around, essentially, the engines were off time with each other. If you can figure out a way to do it, you would have been better off with two clutches, chains, and rear sprockets. That way if one engine happened to fire a little quicker than the other, the clutch will allow for a little "slip". You would have probably broken the sprocket anyway. But, you did what you could do in 20 hrs.
Looks kick ass! You guys ever need any tech support, just hit me up- I was an MST for Briggs and a dealer for all air-cooled engine lines for 18 years.

Two Engines?????? Why The Hell Not!!!!!!!! I like it allot! But what I'd really love to see is a mini bike with two of the big engines on it like you have on the dragster. Now that my friends would be phenomenal !!!! (Although you might want to hire a stunt driver to ride it!!!!!)

You should do scarf joints instead of straight butt welding the extensions. A scarf joint is when you slant cut 30 degrees. You get more weld area and it puts the weld joint more in shear than straight tension. Much stronger, plus it looks cool!

Larger sprockets and try setting the chain between them so that the engines are both in top dead center. The name is awesome cant wait to see the updates to this!
They wherent timed very well. You can tell the front one was hitting way off from the rear one. This thing is awesome and needs to be finished.
