      I don't know how they did it specificly, but I have a dedicated sheet for combat with relavant modifiers across the top. Then the rest of the sheet is broken into action, bonus actions, and reactions. That way I can just look down and pick an action and ba, then just look at reactions if something happens.

    • @sjacks15
      @sjacks15 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I don’t know if they line up, but Brennan had his own hobbit vs elf metaphor for DMs in the roundtable he did with Aabria and Matt Mercer. Basically they’re elves cause they don’t eat or take care of other physical needs while they’re running a game and he’s a hobbit cause he’s constantly snacking and sweating like crazy. If you haven’t seen the rant it’s great and you should check it out.

      Someone get Aabria to drop a tutorial

    • @sjacks15
      @sjacks15 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      I’m sure she has a much better method, but when I had to play a spell caster in a one-shot (way out of my comfort zone) I had ones mostly to help me not get tripped up only using one spell per round. So I’d have a list of my action spells, and then a flow chart showing what bonus actions I could do for different situations. And vice versa. I had them also organized by range and general outcome (deal damage, damage plus other effect, limit enemy’s abilities, boost other PCs abilities).

    • @thomase640
      @thomase640 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I have to guess but I assume its first pages of detailed but shortened ability descriptions and or list of them (like a glossary) and afterwards kind of a battle plan of the most common strategise. Could be smth like "Damagedealing Strat" where it goes through distance and spellslots. Like "Is the enemy in close combat?" No. "Can you use up a spell slot?" Yes. "Cast Spell X". Other method would be to just have a specified flow chart going through action and bonus action per specified situation.
      I on the other hand did lattee and on top of that split my skills into different lists depending on the effect like "Buffing", "Damage", "Attackstrenthening", "Styling", "AoE" etc. So I can find faster what Im looking for. Hope that helps 😅

    This just reminds me how much powergaming really goes on in 5e, showing its inability to be sustained at higher levels. This isn’t unique to 5e; Pathfinder and 3.5 were mathematically game-breaking at high levels, with GMs having to set DCs in the 30s or higher just to overcome the sheer number of bonuses and buffs players would receive.
    What I would hope is not that we receive newer and buffer class and race options, but that we have a flattening of the power curve in the next iteration of the game with a wider base of classes that all have unique mechanics but don’t substantially alter the DC system (5/10/15/20 as acceptable difficulty class numbers) and focus more on 1 action, 1 movement. Bonus actions, reactions, magic items, party buffs, etc. all get in the way of telling the story, because they create choice paralysis. “What is your action?” should not be followed up by “let me consult a flow chart of all these detailed class abilities to see what overpowered response I should have.”

    Should try playing some OSR/AD&D1e where you can attempt to do literally anything, no flow charts needed or even practical 😂

    Stop responding to the DM and make them respond to you. You should know your characters spells and abilities off hand. This helps you be way more impactful as you know exactly how to respond when it’s not your turn and when it’s your turn.

    All I hear are human noises... Mainly from the background. All I get from this are the words "bathroom".
