While most people don’t recommend using an impact driver to remove lug nuts, most of the newer ones have enough power to do it. Impact drivers are intended for driving fasteners. I’ve seen videos where people have swapped the 1/4” collet for an impact anvil.

The 150 ft. Lbs rated is break free torque. Tightening could be less. Id be more worried about not being tight enough than over torquing. This is why using a torque wrench for final tightening is best route.
@@MikesGarage96 interesting to know, if driver is rated to a certain torque at speed 1,2,3, how close it comes to delivering that. With the new electronic torque control, in theory you could avoid the torque wrench phase. My ACDelco 20V impact driver is rated to deliver a precise 73/133/162 ft-lbs with their "Electronic Torque Control" feature (which I thought was special but which I guess they now all have?). My 2003 Suburban's lugs are spec'd to 140 ft-lbs. So in second gear on the driver, I ought to be able to break 140 as busting torque is less than fastening, and to put them back on at 133 is near as damn it to the spec, certainly enough for a roadside tire change at night in the rain.
@@platinumf2505 Couldn’t be more incorrect. We use 750-1700ft/lb impact wrenches at Toyota and you do not waste the time or energy to manually apply final torque. Torque wrench it after if you’re worried
I tried this with my Kobalt xtr impact driver an it took the lug nuts off pretty quick of course not as fast as the Kobalt xtr half inch impact that’s made to take them off
Thanks, that's what I needed to see toolbarn sells an 887 with two 5amp hr batteries and the 115 charger for 199$ I just scored it, best deal on the interwebs in this screwed economy 👍
Where can i buy a 1/4 hex 21mm lug nut remover, the one the comes in one piece and not needing an adapter that you can plug straight into the impact driver?
Same here. Just bought the DCF 850 and 1/2 inch adapter for my f-150 truck. Tried it this morning and nope. Had to go get a 24inch long socket handle to break them loose.@@danagilbert5574
I have that same output, but a 3/8” drive and it will not remove the Lugnuts on my jeep which are taught to 130 foot pounds of torque. If you’re going for 100 foot pounds, then no problem.
It won't work on speed 1, speed 1 on a XR is for delicate applications. Speed 2 is more like the Impact without speed select, and I would think it would have trouble on 2.
i have the dewalt dcf809 impact driver, which is rated to 1700 inch lbs, which is ~141 ft lbs. my lug nuts were torqued to 85 ft lb, and the driver could not get them off. the dewalt dcf887 is only rated slightly stronger at 1825 inch lbs. oh well.
Upgraded from an older 18v kit. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxW1vOBRCMrgTCDEijzpVzDWsgI-Jm2iQv I independently chose the drill and impact tool, before I came across the kit.I like the 3 speed impact gun. It seems more powerful than my older one, and it can be set to be really gentle. The drill is more appropriately sized for my use. I used to have a hammer drill, but I did not like that it was so big and it was not a great hammer drill. I rather have a smaller drill like this, and then get a corded hammer drill for the odd case I need that.
@@cmz85 a drill is a different tool than an impact driver. Much less torque. You can buy an impact wrench farely cheap these days. Get one of those if you are removing lug nuts.

And what type of driver did you use? Dewalt has the Atomic, 20Vmax, and XR. Also the size of the battery matters too. This guy used an XR with a 5Ah battery; I don't imagine a 2Ah battery on an Atomic impact driver or equivalent would be able to loosen up the lug nuts.
It doesn't work with the dcf850 and a 5ah battery. [EDIT] It WORKS, make sure you have a heavy deep impact socket (important!), run on max speed and push against the nut.
I used this to remove the lug nuts on my wife's car. I don't remember if I tightened them, oh well. when the wheel flies off then we will know the answer.
I always wondered why all these channels test a 1/4" impact DRIVER as an impact WRENCH. Hence the terminology. DRIVER vs. WRENCH. 1/4" collet vs. 3/8", 1/2" or larger lug. Just because it can doesn't mean it should. Kinda like using an adjustable wrench to drive a nail.
Come on man. It just feels good to know that a simple driver can get you out of a jam. I sold my 1/2 inch wrench bcs I want using it at all. The other day I wanted to inspect my brakes and instead of doing it manually I used my driver and it worked perfectly fine. No one is saying it should substitute a wrench. But like the guy states, it will get you out of a jam and it did with me
God why do people abuse tools this way? An impact driver is not an impact wrench so stop using it as one. You’re creating problems for everybody as the people who make impact drivers Dewalt, Milwaukee, etc. etc. will not give us longer warranties because they’re finding people breaking their tools constantly, by pulling this kind of silliness. Stop being the bozo of tools and use the proper tool for the proper job, you remove lug nuts with an impact wrench, not an impact driver, which is made to drive screws and wood lags!
No It wont have any effect on the longevity of the impact. I've put more strain on my impact driving 4 inch deck screws than what was shown in this video.
Thank you! The video saved me the cost of buying a 1/2" cordless impact driver just to change tires at home. Very helpful!
You can use a breaker bar or the torque wrench itself to loosen
Great advice on limitations and heads up on DeWalt Impact Driver DCF877B
Thanks for the demo. There are so many models you don't know which one will have enough torque to take lug nuts off.
Great demonstration of the Dewalt Brushless Impact Driver removing lug nuts. Very clear and detail. Thank you!
Such a great intro. Explained all bits he attached before action. There is no any explanation by other people about adopter or extension with torque

Thanks Mike, just got the dcf787 for Christmas, answered my question also.
The 787 is quite weaker compared to the 887

It won’t work for long or if the lug is tightened by an impact wrench.

About putting it back on there using the same impact driver, how would you know you're not overtightning it and probably braking it though?
When installing lug nuts, I just snug them up with an impact. Then I take a torque wrench and bring them up to spec.
The 150 ft. Lbs rated is break free torque. Tightening could be less. Id be more worried about not being tight enough than over torquing. This is why using a torque wrench for final tightening is best route.
Can it remove the nuts on a ball joint or tire rod end? Also, could it be used to remove the crank shaft bolt?
Thanks answered my question was wondering if Id need the other dewalt tools for my Lug nuts but I guess not :D
I got a dewalt impact driver as a gift, and was wondering if I could remove wheels with it. Thank you for sharing!
Simple & Basic - straight to the point!!! Good show mate!!!
When you put the nut back on, did it get it back to 100 ft/lbs (or close to it) or did you have to tighten manually after to get it there?
I didn’t check. Usually when I install lug nuts I just snug them up with an impact and then bring them up to spec with a torque wrench.

Brilliant. Thanks for the straight forward info. All I needed to know 👍

You think the Milwaukee m18 fuel impact driver will have enough torque?
